Title: Chris Rock's Top Five=Blasphemous?
Post by: Sccit on December 14, 2014, 10:25:45 AM
duno if anyone caught this movie yet....but throughout the film, all the characters were namin their top five rappers of all time. not once in the entire movie was 2pac mentioned in someone's top 5....in fact, pretty much no west coast rappers at all. ice-t was mentioned in someones top 5 and got laughed off. but not one list wit 2pac. thats gota get some peeps here mad enough to boycott the movie, rite?

aside from that, it was a good movie...probably chris rock's best since cb4. i'd recommend it.

well a top 5is a person's opinion about their favorite rappers, not an academic debate about who the best rappers are. everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

of course, but u would think throughout the movie at least 1 person would have pac in there (as he is typically in everyones top 5).....not really a big deal, just thought it was awkward and would ruffle some feathers round here.

I know Chris Rock is an old school, East Coast kinda guy. If people in the movie are his age from NYC maybe they were all really influenced by the Pac/Biggie war in the 90's.

it's almost like they purposely dismiss the west....and the one scene where some1 mentions ice-t it gets a shock reply of "whatttt??!!"

Are we really at a point where we are catching feelings over the opinions of fictional characters in a movie?

Top Five lists is something you entertain in adolescence (i.e it is immature).
Real men with facial hair don't care.

Chris Rock was interviewed by Ebro on Hot 97 (or whatever NY station it was), and Ebro asked his top five. Chris Rock put Pac in it but said Biggie didn't qualify due to the small body of work.  Big statement coming from a guy from Brooklyn himself talking on an NY radio station.

Tupac gets a very significant mention.  Suge and Death Row are mentioned.  Ice Cube ends up on somebody's Top Five.  The movie takes place in New York.  It's not like they are going out of their way to ignore or hate on the West.

lol yea 2pac gets a significant mention ... in a movie about top 5 rappers, he gets mentioned in a hypothetical, sayin if he was alive he could be in a Tyler perry movie ....... jay-z produced the movie and questlove was a musical coordinator, so it makes sense

ice cube was mentioned as a joke in Seinfelds lulz list

I don't see how Jay-Z being a co-producer and Quest being music coordinator have anything to do with the film's content.

Questlove has gone on record saying that it's debatable if 2Pac was even an elite emcee...as for Jay-Z, lol i don't even gotta get into, i'm sure u can figure that one out

So are we making the argument that as a music coordinator, Questlove got handed the script and was allowed to make little script notes and have input on who made it to the "Top Five" lists in the film?

How silly of me.  It's pretty common knowledge that music coordinators have the final say on independent film projects.  I should have known better.
