just heard bout this on a tv commercial....any good?
-
Just listened to Black Messiah and did not like it.
That said I've never been a fan of D'Angelo, something about his voice I cannot stomach.

album has very interesting and fresh production, as expected. and a lot of prince influence, for peeps into that type of thing. and of course it's highly anticipated, but by music heads, not the mainstream or most people on this forum. it got to detox levels of delays and being a work in progress though.
anyway shit is dope, gonna need to soak it in for a while. his vocal is pretty hard to make out for the most part, but it's not like that was an accident. there's a lot going on on here 8)

i checked it out for the first time today and i already love it! good shit 8)...his singing reminds me on bilal sometimes and there is definetly a huge funkadelic influence...
kendra foster of p-funk co-wrote 8 of the songs btw.
-
speakin of bilal, whatever happened 2 him??
-
his last album "a love surreal" came out in 2013..it's a good album, but needs a little time to grow on most people because it's pretty experimental/alternative. his music has a bigger jazz influence now then he had back in the days...saw him live last year and that show was fire!
-
did u just quote urself?
-
yup..was a mistake of course
-
Album of the year for me.
Absolutley amazing.
With the Prince album and this i am set for the winter time

I think people are truly looking for a "Messiah" in black music. D'angelo's was dope back in the day, but let's not get carried away. And if it sounds like Prince then I ain't fuccin wit it

I don't think he refers to himself as a Black Messiah. There is a sample on the record referring to Jesus Christ as a black man etc.
If it sounds like Prince are you not checking it because he is copying him or because you don't like Prince?

his first two albums are pretty much undisputed classics. you say that like he fell off or something, when in fact dude hasn't put out an album in over ten years. he was dope on the 'imagine' hook too.
anyway i'm digging the album, some true musicianship on here and some beautiful songs. tracks like 'really love' just makes you wanna smile :)

Wow this is a total surprise! I had no idea he was working on new material. Currently jamming the 'Voodoo' album as I write, gotta check this out soon.
-
Voodoo was a classic but I know he fell in to cocaine oblivion for years so this is refreshing.

Got the CD and playing it over and over, very impressive. I really like the guitars on 'Prayer' and the last track 'Another Life' is just brilliant.
Interestingly, I only really recently got into Voodoo after having it for quite a while. I think it was because 'Brown Sugar' was so easy to get into and contains some of D'Angelo's best records, but some of the stuff on Voodoo is so multi-layered and is just phenomenal to listen to.

Brown Sugar and Voodoo were much better albums , but it's nice to see a comeback from D'angelo . At first listen i jumped the gun and called it great but after comparing it to his first two albums it's really just mediocre .

You're right. It took me a few years to realise how good it is. Brown sugar is dope but Voodoo is just brilliant !
