Everyone on this forum appreciates Quik's contributions to music as a PRODUCER, but I don't think he gets enough respect for his skills as a rapper. When I listen to Quik's music, I find that I prefer his verses to those of anyone he collaborated with. Even when he's on songs with great rappers, I find his vocals far superior.
My one complaint about The Midnight Life is that it didn't have enough verses from Quik on it. It seems to me that Quik (like Terrace Martin) has come to undervalue his talents on the microphone because he knows how extraordinarily skilled he is at producing.
To me, Quik's corpus of rap music is the best there is - it's the most varied and the most enduring. The only comparable body of work for me is Tupac's. I go back and forth between them, but I regard Quik as one of the few rappers on Pac's level, in terms of lyrical quality, consistency, and the realness of the music. Lot of rappers can claim to have more complicated rhymes and shit, but few put more of their real life and emotion into their work than Pac and Quik.

i agree...quik is very underrated as a rapper. he's lyrically much better than he gets credit for, and his delivery is always on point. he's just such a great producer that the rapping is secondary.
