"I never really listened to The Chronic. I guess I never liked smooth? Same with Puff, who really brought R&B into it. I preferred hip-hop when it was nothing like R&B. I love breakbeats and B-boy style drum machines. I never liked the slick stuff."

the chronic wasn't the smoothest record though, at that time it was still rough and had a lot of hip hop elements that would progressively disappear with later g-funk releases ala Doggystyle, Regulate, Dogg Food or Conversation.
i can hear his argument though, i understand people not being too fond of that style. and i'm not surprised at all that rick rubin of all people didn't get down with that type of rap music.

Rick Rubin a legend..but much of Kanye West music 00-07 was smoothed, and R & B friendly.

Rick Rubin did a lot in his days for several key hip hop groups but what's he done for hip hop in the past 15?
he fucked up eminem's last album despite having a smash hit in Rap God. how???

I DONT BELIEVE HIM

thats weird because most of the drums on the chronic are just breakbeats. I guess it was too clean for him
-
hes so old he probably just doesnt remember listening to it
