MC Ren made a series of social media posts today (June 10) regarding the promotion of Straight Outta Compton, the forthcoming film on N.W.A that is due in theaters August 14.
"Man fuck these bitches at universal pictures leaving me out the movie trailers tryin to rewrite history," MC Ren writes on Twitter.
MC Ren, who with Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and DJ Yella was a member of N.W.A, is not depicted in the trailers.
The trailers focus on Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. The trailers also feature Ruthless Records executive and N.W.A manger Jerry Heller, but do not focus on either MC Ren or DJ Yella.
DJ Yella produced N.W.A’s material with Dr. Dre.
MC Ren was one of N.W.A’s main rappers and has been name-dropped in songs by several rappers, including OutKast on “Aquemini.”He also wrote some of Eazy-E’s lyrics.
"When you have bitches work on a hip hop film that don't know shit about hip hop this is what happens. How the hell u leave me out after all,” MC Ren writes, "The work I put into them records. It's disrespectful to me, my family and most of all my FANS.”
MC Ren’s posts are as follows, as are photos of the vinyl of N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton and Eazy-E's Eazy-Duz-It albums, which highlight MC Ren's writing credits as a member of N.W.A and for Eazy-E..

It wouldn't be a good marketing strategy to promote a movie about MC Ren and DJ Yella.. they need to bring to the cinema a bigger audience than NWA fanbase!

I'd wouldn't recognize MC Ren in the streets, let alone a actor portraying him in a movie. MC Ren can rap his ass off but if he wasn't in NWA nobody would care about dude, and this is comin' from a NWA fan who thinks Ren is a better rapper than Cube.
Regular public don't wanna see an NWA movie because of Ren. He should be glad they do a good job at promotin' a movie that he will be a part of and gets royalties for.

I can understand why dude is kind of pissed, and actually this has been a problem for some time.
MC Ren never gets the respect he deserves for NWA. Everyone from Hellar, to even Dr. Dre and Ice Cube also have sort of glossed over Ren when talking about NWA for a long time now. I'm sure the promotions and everything had to meet their approval. But it would be unwise for Ren to pick a fight with Dre or Cube, so I think he had to take it out on the evil white/Jewish media owned movie company, or whatever. He always gets overlooked. I was surprised to—when I kept seeing those pics of Cube, Dre, and the actors playing their part and Eazy's part—but no Ren and Yella in the picture. This was in a lot of the promotions.

M.C. Ren is NWA more than every other member besides Eazy. If you grew up listening to NWA you know what he is. He's the only one that never chsnged his style and kept tge NWA hardcore sound for hid solo's. He was my Favourite member str8 up...

Agreed. It's not like they rewrote history and left him out of NWA in the movie, he's just not in the trailer for obvious reasons. With an attitude like that I can see why he was pretty much a nobody to rap music after NWA.

That's kind of how I see it. People that grew up with NWA already know what it is. There's a lot of new listeners/fans that he can gain from the film. People that see this movie are likely going to go through the NWA members' catalogs. Even if he isn't portrayed as much as he should/could be on screen, there's no denying his presence if you go back and listen to the albums and read up on the history.
He has more to gain than lose imo.

If I was Ren, I'd be mad too. He basically wrote all of Efil4zaggin and carried the group after Cube left. Although I wouldn't go public with my anger. I'd call Cube and let him know, hey man, I wasn't in the trailer, that's fucked up man. Cube would make a call to the studio and the second trailer I'd expect to see Ren in there.

The purpose of the trailer is to get people interested in the movie. I can see why Ren and Yella could be upset, but I can't blame the trailer for focusing on group members that the general public know. Let's face it, Dre and Cube are still relevant and Eazy E is a legend. As great as MC Ren was, he hasn't released an album that has made a splash in a long time. One of the things I loved about Ren was his ability to kill it after Dre left. Kiss My Black Azz was classic from start to finish without any big name production. I think the problem was that Dre was a producer and able to sign new, younger artists and adapt as time went by. Cube also signed younger rappers, who ended up writing for him and keeping his sound current. Cube also made it big in movies, to the point a lot of youngsters don't even remember he was a rapper. Ren signed CPO and helped him make a decent album, but he didn't keep current as well as the others.
If I were Ren though, I don't think I would have made a big deal over a trailer. As long as the movie depicts how important he was to the group and how much work he put in, he should be cool. I guarantee that there will be thousands of people that never heard of Ren that will know who he is and if they go back and check the albums it could make him relevant again and kick start a comeback. It would also be cool to hear Ren on some current Dre beats.

Obviously the ren and yella stories aren't as dramatic from a hollywood perspective but why not add their names to the trailer? It does show the group, the five guys walking several times.

Ren, BG KO and Dre'sta wrote ALL of Eazy's music once Cube bounced, and probably a few others

I think MC Ren as well as DJ Yella have every right to be upset. The trailer is basically the cliff notes to the movie. This is an NWA movie, not a Eazy-E, Ice Cube, & Dr.Dre movie. NWA is a 5 man group, not 3. Regardless of who went on to become more popular after the group disbanded, the movie is on the group itself so the group should be present in the trailer. You think if a Beatles movie came out right now just John & Paul would be in the trailer? Hell no because theyre legends & NWA should get that same respect. Only the hardcore euro nerd wiggas, people living in the past and young kids who listed to GTA radio will be peeping for the trailer and they already know who Yella and Ren are. The whole point of the trailer is to catch the random flick watching, was there but don't really care, "hey look its that guy from...." crowd.
