Thought it was for 98
-
yeah it was 98'... and no it wouldn't of been well-received by Dre's standards. Reason I say that is that "Got It Locked" generated very little buzz on the mainstream. Best case scenario it could of created buzz out West and amongst the more devout hip-hop heads and moved it's way to platinum. I think it would've definitely gone gold on the strength of Dre's name alone with the way record sales were at that time. Ultimately it would've been a quality record and headz respected quality back then so it would've turned a profit for sure.... damn shame it wasn't released summer of 98 cause the game needed it to keep the South from taking over

I wish the song with Crooked I would leak

woulda gone gold, maybe plat....i remember one time i was workin at a record store in the summer of 98 and some kid came up to me with a source page that said "thy kingdome come - album available now", i told him "kid, it's not out, theres nothin i can do for you". he kept insisting it was out, furiously diggin through the "K" section in every genre, until he went into a demonic rage and started shouting at the top of his lungs "DRE NEVER LIES!!!", shit was crazy. jk@infinite- infamous story of thy kingdom come not comin out and the source lyin bout it.

97/98. Was conceived earlier I guess and got pushed back a few times anyway
-
I think it would have been well-received, but I don't think it would have sold particularly well coming off the back of the Aftermath compilation which many consider a disappointment. If it had dropped shortly after 2001, or maybe even the Slim Shady LP for that matter, it mihgt have stood a chance to do some big numbers.

...true story, except for the demonic rage and "Dre Never Lies", lol...
...that was actually one of two heartbreaking tales from the record store that summer. The other one was the first "Midnight Sale" I ever attended, the night of August 3rd when Snoop's The Game album dropped, I remember putting it in and actually thinking the first song "Welcome to My World" was dope (yeah I was an idiot that year) but by the end of the album I'd realized it was trash. I remember I was so depressed I nearly gave my whole car away to some ficca who wanted to jack my ride that night

Dre has served as a great role model, father figure throughout my life. Don't know where I'd be without him.

Lol at dre neva lies.

Dre had so much juice in 96', and juice at MTV at the time... I mean I've watched documentaries about how this guy and Kurt Cobain basically made MTV what it was. The programming director said that the station wasn't much, until suddenly the perfect storm developed and he had Nirvana in one hand and the Chronic in the other, and it blew up from there.
So anyway, MTV was playing his "Been THere Done That" video a bit, and they gave him some positive press. He had a Source cover and the big controversy with leaving Death Row, East/West war, etc. So Aftermath Compilation had a ton of things going for it that King Tee did not.
I mean, Dre had experienced 3 flops since leaving Death Row. Aftermath Comp had flopped, The Firm had flopped. And his Bullworth soundtrack single with LL Cool J had flopped. So MTV was starting to run out of favors for Dre. They weren't gonna show any love to King Tee. And the Source wasn't gonna put King Tee on the cover either. He was gonna get some play at BET but that was about it.
...so long story short Aftermath Comp got some run in the mainstream that pushed it to double platinum. But King Tee was likely goin gold.
...btw, I consider "East/West Killaz" to be one of the greatest, most important, under-rated, and timely hip-hop songs of all-time.

Can't deny 'Let's Make a V' being a single 8)
Quik killed the beat and his verse

Lol at dre neva lies.
Detox is coming!

i used to smash a girl who claimed to be related to king tee (niece or cousin, cant remember, this was damn near 13 years ago. it mustve been true cuz really, who would make something like that up) and she told me once dre signed eminem that he basically forgot all about king tee's project and said that it was a shame cuz some of it couldve blown up, specially mentioning the quik song i think. she was bad, thick like luke dancers, used to stay in lake view terrace. anyway, i remember getting the promo cassette for st8 gone for free and looking forward to his album, but like others have said, i didn't hear much anticipation for it at all at the time. having heard the bootleg thats leaked over the years, i agree with the over all consensus, that it was a dope album but wouldve been mildly recieved and quickly forgotten.

So the rumor about Levitti is actually true
-
Shake Da Spot was rediculous.
If Lp sounded like that woulda been big, Xzibits 40 dayz was basically an Aftermath Lp in all but name, released at the same time (ish). Did that go gold?
Until Compton OST, Kingdom Come was Dre's worst production (still love it).

Damn your trippin... Dre's worst production, which is like saying "Jordan's worst season with the Bulls".... is definitely not Compton. That is a certified classic, sorry you are still sleeping. Saying Dre's worst production is like saying "Jordan's worst season with the Bulls". Because even on his so-called flops like Aftermath Presents and The Firm he still had classic joints like "East/West Killaz" and "Phone Tap".
...and you can't say Kingdom Come wouldn't have gone gold because Xzibit's 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz didn't go gold. That was far from an Aftermath LP, as it didn't have Dre's name anywhere on it. Mel-Man produced a banger, and Dre's homies were spotted here and there, but Dre's name was not on it, not as overlooking the project, not mixing, and not producing.
Take Dre's name out of it and you have a decent point though. 40 Dayz was a banger and it failed to go gold. Thy Kingdom Come is a comparable record in terms of quality.

N.W.A & The Posse is pretty wack and better than Compton. Fat Girl shits on your favourite Compton track.
Str8 Gone is still dope, probably got better with time, lp would be a lot heavier if sounded like that.
To say 40 dayz is not Aftermath record in all but name is crazy. Clear stepping stone to The Restless Lp exec prod. By Dre. (Haters act like Restless/Dre hook up was something new/out of the blue? Clearly not if know anything about Xzibit's career.)
Back to topic, I thought Hittman's Lp sounded sonically like a continuation of Kingdom Come, like 2001 never happened. Or was recorded earlier (except Last Dayz). Wish King T got more of Dre's 2001 sound. & we got a Rakim Lp while I'm at it.
Last emp Lp sounded more like recorded in Firm era than Tipsy's. I guess Kingdom Come is Lp with unique Dre sound.
-
I read Notorious B.I.G. was a fan and was supposed to be on the album...makes sense if he was recording this in '97...I wonder which track he intended him to have a verse on :'(
-
lol 40 days was not an aftermath album brodie
-
a bit "funny" fact at least twice a year somebody start a discussion bout this unreleased king t album, but nobody neva mention his other albums.
-
He had just put out the Aftermath compilation which got no love...
And the production on King T's joint was an extension of that style and sound, to some degree, using much of the same in house team.
Dre was cutting his losses on his sound during that era by not releasing that album. He was well aware of what the streets would have said had he put out back to back joints that weren't game changers.
Luckily he hooked up with Storch, kept it going with Mel Man, and found Em and put out 2001
-
Lol only nerds in Internet forums expect Dre to release only 'game changers'
-
I'm talking about Dre himself only wanting to release sound shifting work.
Fans like me, you, whoever, want anything in that vault cause we all know it's dope
