as a rock producer yes, when it comes to hip hop he was just an executive
-
11 March 1953, Brooklyn, New York. Jimmy started out as an engineer in the mid-1970s for John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen, and produced hit albums for U2, Dire Straits, the Eurythmics, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Pretenders, Bob Seger and Patti Smith.
In the 1980's he was named one of the five hottest producers by Billboard and twice voted producer of the year by Rolling Stone.
In 1989 he founded Interscope Records, introducing artists such as No Doubt, Nine Inch Nails, Limp Bizkit, Enrique Iglesias, Mya and Smash Mouth. In 1992, the gangsta rap label Death Row Records (2) joined the Interscope family with artists like Dr. Dre, 2Pac and Snoop Doggy Dogg.

well he started off as basically a producer for Nine Inch Nails and stuff like that, eventually working his way up to executive / owner
maybe he first got in the building interning or inherited the job through family, who knows
