Title: Ras Kass: Westcoast or Eastcoast Production?
Post by: Twentytwofifty on May 16, 2003, 09:36:36 AM
He's a westcoast artist but has shined over eastcoast production and those are some of his best songs.

The Diamond D remix of "Soul On Ice" murders the original and same can be said with the DJ Premier remix of "Goldyn Child".  He also killed the Beatminerz produced "Oral Sex".

Those are just some examples of Ras Kass coming thru over some eastcoast production.

So what is it?  Westcoast or eastcoast?

Grimy westcoast beats ala "Soul on ice" album or east coast beats.

Proper westcoast production sounds wak with Ras..

SAME goes with Xzbit, give him grimy westcoast beats like what E-Swift and Thayard gave him or eastcoast beats.

Doesn't really matter on the coast, depends on the producer.

It comes down to the producer.. not the coast.. as least in this example..
Alchemist, Premo, Rockwilder have all brough out the best in Ras, but so have a grip of Westcoast-producers..

So as long as he's working with Alchemist, Dre, Primo, Battlecat, Fred Wreck maybe, it's all good..

But if he tries to go commercial, and gets Neptunes, Irv Gotti or Trackmasters.. it might fuck his sound up.

Yeah, I know that.. but he doesn't live there, he lives in Manhattan, NY.
And that's where he got most of his influence from.. Premo & other NY-producers is his biggest influence, along with Muggs..

He isn't really fucking with too many Westcoast people, and he doesn't have a Westcoast-sound at all..

Look at who he have been producing for, and listen to his sound.. not much Westcoast-influence to spot there..
That's why I label him a EASTCOAST-producer, but of course people from the West wants to claim him.

Doesn't deserve a reply, see above jackass.
