His Boxcar Sessions album put me on to the idea that the West had more to it than G-funk/gangster rap. He really bridged the gap well between music for the hood and backpack music. Light Sleeper one of my all-time favourite jams.
Gonna dig out the cd tonight and throw it on. RIP. Maybe pump the three tracks he did as part of Golden State as well.
Fun fact: he lived with Pac in the DU years

Damn, RIP
I ordered the first cd from The WhoRidas yesterday.

Damn, R.I.P. Reggie "Saafir" Gibson.
Xzibit mourned his death in a heartfelt caption that read: “Approximately at 8:45am this morning, my brother Reggie known to the world as Saafir passed away. We have so much history I can’t even explain what I’m feeling right now. We surrounded him and let him know how much we loved him. He can rest now.
“Friends, Family, everyone that rocked with us from the Hip Hop community, if you could be so solid and reach out for @chopblack his younger brother, and @lilsaafir his son, the family really needs to be supported during this time. That’s all I have right now. My soul is crushed. We love you Bro.”

RIP
one of my biggest disappointments regarding shelved projects was never getting that Golden State Project Xzibit was promoting back in the early 2000s

Nice post
And that's a good point about bridging the gap between between the backpackers in hip-hop and gangsta rap--because that's exactly where I was after Eminem came out and I started digging deeper into rappers lyrics. Obviously it wasn't really fair to assume the East Coast was more lyrical but of course that was the perception because all those classic magazines like the Source were East Coast bias. But I grew up on Death Row shit so there was that dark era of 1998 when aside from the heroic Daz album they were basically defunct -- I was listening to a lot of garbage like No Limit and I even bought a Ja Rule album in that time (though I didn't make it past one spin).
My breakthrough came in early 99' when like you said about Saafir--artists like Eminem, and Xzibit helped me bridge the gap and I started to appreciate great music and great lyricism and both coasts and even the ol' school the overall culture, history of hip-hop, all the elements, I became a true head
...and that's interesting about the 2pac connection. That's why Pac really is like a Black Jesus because he somehow was connected and almost everybody has a story about him and these stories have continued through time and after death
