why didn't Aftermath never release the album? There was a cassette promo version with almost all the tracks on it
In 1998, after the aftermath sampler flop and The Firm flop, the label probably didn't want to take any more risks
and there are some versions that came out afterwards

What I assume is Jimmy Iovine forced Eminem onto Dr. Dre and he had to do that project even though King T was done; plus the main single wasn't well received. So that would be the two reasons it never came out.
-
I believe it was because it only got 3.5/5 in The Source.

KING T
Thy Kingdom Come
Aftermath
Production: Dr. Dre. DJ Quik, Battlecat.
Ant Banks, Stu B Doo, others
King T signs to Dr. Dre's Aftermath label.
On paper, it sounds intriguing, sorta like
Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler or Al
Pacino and Robert DeNiro teaming up late
in their careers. And Lord knows, King T
deserves that extra push. After delivering
the ghetto goods with such malt-flavored
mayhem as 1988's Act A Fool and 1993's
Tha Triflin' Album (which introduced Tha
Alkaholiks), it's only right that this underrat
ed veteran get the respect, recognition and
royal treatment that his name suggests
However, Mr. T's fifth caper, Thy King-
dom Come, isn't the crowning glory you
might expect; long-time fans won't be
poppin' 40 Oz's in locker-room celebra
tion steez. That's because this record,
although solid lyrically and musically
ambitious, is far too reserved for that.
Whereas in the past a King T vehicle
went berserk at the drop of a Raiders cap
(thanks to DJ Pooh's production), this
effort takes few risks. Even more puz-
zling is the fact that Dre only checks in
behind the boards for a handful of songs.
It's a shame, considering that the Doo-
tored ditty "Tha Cron" is one of the
album's tighter moments. And the
exquisitely constructed "Money," a true.
triumph, features Dre rhyming about the
root of all evil and effectively incorporates
a sultry-voiced vixen nailing the hook.
While some of this album's heart-felt,
gang-related sentiments suffer in mean-
dering, Italian mobster movie music that
ring out-dated, there're still non-Dre com-
positions that pack punch. "Got It Locked"
stutter steps, unloading blasts of bass
while Tila hems the mic as usual: "Some of
y'all still don't know what King means/
means ruler /Castle dweller / Old Schooler /
Wit’ a wine cellar and a draw bridge /
My troops got your crew hostage / While I’m getting’ head
/ And fed grits and sausage»
While Thy Kingdome Come doesn’t completely
live up to its potential, all-star collaborations with
the likes of DJ Quik, Frost, MC Ren and Too $hort
more than comensate. As it stands, the final judgment
is that King T still rules, but he’s seen better days.

The double disc version with an all black cover that came out within the past few years is TOP quality. Happy with the remastered sound. What an album also...
PS. Are you MrSunshine1995 on Instagram at all?

That would’ve been incredible to have that cassette promo in 1998 as an 16 year old — and rolling around banging that shit in my 94 Tempo that summer.

I’m glad that King Tee was able to officially release that project finally, but I wish it had been released in its original form. I like the way the album played through with the original track listing, ending with Shake Da Spot using that California Love sample. Then some skits were removed, songs faded into something originally but cut short.
One of the highlights of the double disc release is that “That’s Drama” & “Got It Locked” finally saw official releases, but they used lossy MP3’s for one or both of those tracks and lossless rips could have been acquired.

Thanks, and my question is also, does it matter to Aftermath that other labels re-release the album a number of times, you can't say, but you know what I mean.

Heard some of the leaks this album would of been 8) 8) 8) 8)

Let me mention again that fans that were feindin' for this album got screwed twice because it was supposed to be released on Aftermath summer of 1998 and then he tried to move it over to Ruthless to have it released and Ruthless went defunt... but how dope would that have been if it dropped on Ruthless and furthered the legacy of NWA and West Coast rap

A long time ago I read that it was shelved due to The Source's review of the album. e.g. 3.5 mics out of 5. I guess at the time with Dre starting his own label he and or his people just decided to move on. I recall when Dre dropped "Dr. Dre Presents... The Aftermath" it was met with lukewarm reception because people were wanting a Dre album... which ties into the fact on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Dre_Presents:_The_Aftermath .. "A platinum seller,[11] the album peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 and at #3 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop-Albums charts. Nonetheless, quite unlike Dre's prior album—The Chronic, released in December 1992 as Dre's debut solo album and Death Row Records' first album—Dre's new offering, not a standout, received mixed reviews and lukewarm appraisals."
On a side note, I purchased the album on Amazon when it was released a year or 2 ago. I also stream it via Spotify and I really dig it. The track with Shaq rides!

I still wanna purchase it and checked a week ago and Thy Kingdom Come wasn’t available for purchase on Amazon. I had the bootleg copy in 2002 summer when it finally leaked and damn that mutherfucker banged! It still sounded fresh in 2002 I used to roll to it.. favorite joint was “The Chron” feat Dre that shit was so smooth

Must be nice to waste all that money in studio time, features, instrumentals, the economics of the music business are a mystery to me and now it is infinitely more confusing since music is free

king t is partially to blame
instead of being patient he asked dre if he could take the album to ruthless
dre said yes and ruthless folded before they could get it out

They write you off as a tax write off - if you get shelved. Plus, if the artist is unable to fill contract, the artist will walk away with a shelved album and in debt - from all those things you mentioned (Studio Time, Features, Instrumentals, Engineers, Music Videos, etc.) because the label has what they call an advance and the label also charges for their in house services. So, either way you pay out your own pocket to be an artist and its more profitable to be shelved rather than release it when its an unknown artist.
-
The reason it was shelved is because everything became about Dr. Dre's solo 2001 and Eminem who was in the midst of blowing up. Plus the West Coast wasn't selling - so they say. Last Emperor and King T are two of my favorite Aftermath signees but both shelved for the same reason. Didn't meet standards of Doc Dre.

Yeah I’m sure King T subsequently went and got a job as a manager at Dick Sporting Goods and paid off all the debt.
Tax write offs, well, hell, if that’s the case then sign anyone with a chance and have them record an album because you got nothing to lose cause it’s a tax write off
That doesn’t make sense either

I get it... but also The Source reviews the album and I've read Dre was not happy with the review. Not sure how true it is.... but with him starting his own label he may not have wanted to repercussions from the negative review. Ironically though The Firm album was not a good review/look so yeah. I agree.. prob mostly the fact that Em was the next big thing up. I hated that it got shelved. I still ride to the new CD and stream it!

Artists are not personally responsible for repaying their advance. The money is recouped from sales/royalties. If their record is shelved it is just a tax write off and the artist does not see a penny from any future release unless the advance is recouped or they are released from their contract.

I also read that at the time.

Yeah so if that’s the case then what’s to stop labels from just signing and advancing dozens of acts if it’s just a tax write off anyway
-

That money still has to come from somewhere. And I’m pretty sure there’s a limit to tax write offs

Because then they would just be losing more money?
