Title: Coolio's Timber Mix?
Post by: Soopafly DPGC on October 20, 2026, 08:08:49 AM
Since Sccit has been fawning over Coolio so much lately, got me thinking......and this is for the old heads, what exactly is a Timber Mix?

Coolio had regular releases, and then Timber Mix releases of Fantastic Voyage, 1,2,3,4 Sumpin New, and All The Way Live.  Fantastic Voyage was mid, until the Timber Mix came out, then the song blew up.

The Timber Mixes of these 3 songs sounded much better than the originals, and I understand it's a different way of mixing the songs.  But what's the background on it?  Was there one producer responsible for these mixes? Were there any other artists or songs who had "Timber Mixes" for their songs?  Was it just a gimmick Coolio used? I was looking at the liner notes on these songs, and I don't see any particular producer credited for these mixes.

My mommy took me took the record store that year and I wanted to get 2pac because of the "I Get Around" single but it said Strictly for My N-Words on the cover and since I'm not an N-Word it meant the album wasn't for me.

So I got the Maxi Single to Fantastic Voyage.  And like you said it had these different mixes and one was weaker than the others and another - which must have been the Timber mix — was superior.  I asked my mommy why but she didn't know.

Quick Google search:

"Timber Mix" is simply a specific club- and radio-friendly remix created by the New York dance music producer and remixer Joey Gardner.
Instead of naming it a "Joey Gardner Remix," it was titled a "Timber Mix" because Joey Gardner ran an imprint production company and record label called Timber! Records, which frequently collaborated and had distribution deals with Tommy Boy Records in the 1990s.

Awesome, thanks for this!  Exactly the info I was looking for.  I wonder if there were any other rappers signed to Tommy Boy in the 90's that had Timber mixes for their songs.  I don't remember seeing any other than Coolio, but there must be more.
