Okay, I'm gonna channel my inner Herm Edwards here for a moment (and one of the greatest sports rants in history): "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!"
The great thing about music is, you make music to make great music. HELLO! Not to be better than the other person on the song with you. That is retarded.
..I actually had a lot more I was gonna say in this rant, I was going to go into the golden era and how when Dre made the Chronic he cared about one thing only and that was making great music, not about who was getting outrapped on a song, I was also going to go into how this all started when Nas dissed Jay-Z saying "Eminem murdered you on your own shit" and how it was a dope line at the time, but has since gotten taken too far.
But then I found the Herm Edwards Clip and Herm's rant said all I needed to say. Thanks Herm.

yeah homie... cause simply put--you wanna make the best tracks you can make, and ultimately the best album you can make—period! YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!
...I never heard the concept of "outrapped on his own track" in the 80's or 90's that was never a consideration. They just wanted to make great music. That concept came later with all these debates when Eminem first did their joint together all anyone was talking about is how Eminem murdered Wayne on the track or some shit like that... and it's only gotten worse since, like they ask rappers in all these interviews if they were worried about someone outrapping them or some shit like that, questions that weren't asked in the 80's and 90's.

I thought this topic was going in a different direction ;D'
Infinite I agree with you but only if it is an artist like Dre or a Puffy or a Jermaine Dupri...if you are an artist like a Nas or even an AZ and you get bodied like Jay did on Renegade its flat out embarrassing or at least that's how it would be viewed here
edit - and it is

same here, i've only been worried bout making great music
it helps to be a top tier emcee, but regardless, i'm a producer just as much as i am a rapper .. so my concern is always everyone bringing something unique to the table and making the best track we possibly can collectively

also getting outrapped and getting bodied are 2 different things
Kurupt got outrapped by X and Crook on Step Up but was he really bodied?
if you listen closely to his flow and lyrics he was just a step off
not Dogg Food level but close enough lyrically and he catered his flow to the beat perfectly

But that's still missing the point homie, and I think Sccit will agree with me on this:
We can use the track "Step Up" that you mentioned. The song might be even better if Kurupt gets—as you described it "bodied".
Think of it like "All About the Benjamins". If Jadakiss comes in and spits the greatest verse of all time then that like ruins the song — because the highlight is when Big comes in and the end and the beat changes up—the earlier verse create that pattern and that tension and then it allows for the listener to feel that lift and clarity when Biggie comes in that makes the song.

Like Puffy rapping monotone and just regular on "Victory" actually makes the song better because it's a duet with Biggie and it gives the song more dynamic and lift to Biggies part—which has an overall effect to making the song better. Does anyone care if Puffy got "bodied" in this song? No, because they were worried about making great music in these days:

Another way to think of it is like playing the piano—you have to have the dissonant keys to make the harmony work.
A song isn't a competition between two rappers to see who can spit better — in fact that's actually battle rap if you really take it to its conclusion — not how you go about making a song

oh I agree with you and Sccit on the main topic...he broke it down perfectly that he as a producer like Dre but also a rapper like Dre the main thing is to get the best song possible ...I don't think lets say when Dre was producing and rapping on the Housewife remix was worried that he was going to get bodied or outrapped by Kurupt and Hittman he just wanted to make the best possible song so people would forget that horrible one on Kuruption!

Word...
but just to beat a dead horse... and continue my rant...
...Another analogy would be Rodman and Jordan with "outrapping" being "scoring". Saying Rodman got "outrapped" by Jordan is like clowning Rodman saying, "You got out OUTSCORED by Jordan!"
They are on the same team dummies.

you know what's funny about that right?
it all goes back to '96
the start of Jordans 2nd 3peat , Rodman 1st season with the 72 win Bulls etc
so its not only hip hop

no.. nobody ever said that... I was making an anology. Nobody ever said "JORDAN OUTSCORED RODMAN" because everyone understood Rodman was a rebounder and Jordan a scorer
