Sosa ejected after cork is found in shattered bat
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press
CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa was ejected in the first inning of Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay right when umpires found cork in his shattered bat.
The Cubs had runners at second and third when Sosa broke his bat with a grounder to second that at first appeared to drive in a run.
But crew chief Tim McClelland gathered with the other three umpires to examine the bat. Cubs manager Dusty Baker came out and the umpires showed the bat to him.
Mark Grudzielanek was sent back to third base, the run was wiped off the board and Sosa was ejected as he stood in the dugout.

its funny how sosa talks
-
man give him a break.. he's broken bats before. and this never happend
-
maybe that's why it broke...... the cork inside meant there was less wood/metal/whatever around the outside to support it...
how many other times has he broken bats?
-
not only does he used corked bats..but he shots up on roids...what a cheater 8)
-
He's saying it was a practice bat, and they grabbed all his other bats. If the other bats are normal, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, brother.
-
i believe sammy, they looked at all his other bats, and they were clean
they looked at his 498 HR bat,it was clean
when the bat broke he ran to 1st threw the handle down and didnt show any concern to go get the bat, that shows he didnt know it was the one he used for BP
and verbal,i think he took a drug test and was clean(pretty sure that swhat i heard on espn)

Sosa's confiscated bats come back clean

CHICAGO (AP) -- Sammy Sosa's 76 bats confiscated by baseball officials showed no signs of cork in X-rays taken the day after he was ejected for using a corked bat in a game.
The bats were taken from the Chicago Cubs' locker room during the game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Tuesday night. Cork was found in Sosa's bat when it shattered after he grounded out in the first inning of the Cubs' 3-2 victory.
"The bats were clean and had no foriegn substances in them," said Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner's office. "That is consistent with Sammy's explanation of the incident last night."
Sosa said he accidentally pulled out a bat he uses to put on home run displays for fans in batting practice. He has had dozens of bats break in the past few years with nothing suspicious found.
He was in the lineup for Wednesday night's game against Tampa Bay.
"I stood up yesterday like a man and took the blame," Sosa said. "But the media today, they've got me up there like I'm a criminal."
Sosa could face a suspension of up to 10 games, but Alderson said the decision will be made by Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline.
Watson was expected to arrive in Chicago by Thursday morning and will conduct interviews at the ballpark.
Alderson said commissioner Bud Selig was "very concerned."
"He has strong personal affection for Sammy," Alderson said. "At the same time, he instructed his office to conduct a thorough investigation."

Cubs fans at Wrigley showed whose side they are on, despite a torrent of criticism Sosa has received nationwide.
Many of the announced crowd of 33,317 cheered him as he sprinted to his position in right field and gave him a standing ovation when he came to the plate in the first before striking out. Only a few scattered boos could be heard.
One sign in the bleachers said: ``Still Lovin Sammy

im telling ya...its a big cover up...i saw on espn today...an interview with a top baseball official..and he was going on how sammy is baseball's best public figure...blah blah.. trying to make it look like he's this good guy...the sport of baseball has a lot to loose on this...i wouldnt be suprised if someone switched the bats that mlb personel got....and you wonder why they dont test for roids in baseball...cause half of them would fail and it would be a public relations nightmare...just like if sammy's bats where corked...even if half of them where corked...mlb people would never leak it to the public.... 8)

The Assulta makes a good point. But, I don't think Sosa used one very often. He had been struggling recently especially since being beaned in the dome, so he might have felt he needed a little help? Don't know but it's sad though. :(
