Title: DVD-R or DVD+R discs ??
Post by: Jome on July 01, 2003, 11:07:31 AM
I'm gonna buy a NEC DVD-burner 1300.. compatible with both +R and -R standards..
But which discs are better ??

There's 4 options..
DVD+R
DVD+RW
DVD-R
DVD-RW

I know the RW is more expensive and can be rewritten over and over..
But what's really the difference between + and - ?

Today does it exist three competing DVD recording standards:

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 90% of all DVD Players and mostDVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 73% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 85% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 73% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

DVD-R is the winner.

good choice for the nec i sell the pioneer 105 dvd writers its a shame your not in the uk i could of got u sum cheap disc which we import

id go for the dvd- r as the disc are cheaper u shouldnt have problems with the nec its the pioneer that gives u trouble writing at 4 speed but the nec is a very good machine and wont have trouble with discs the + disc can go from 90p to Ŗ1.40 a disc where you can get good -r disc from 60p so the -r writer should be good

Hmm.. yall are saying that the - format is better, but most people are saying that the + format will win the race.. and that it has better functionality.
