So...how many of yall were fans of Rakim before he signed to Aftermath?....i see Ra in alotta avatars and sigs...just wonderin...how many of yall were fans of him before his Aftermath affiliation...
-
cant say that i was....... 8)
-
yeah but not a huge one.. didnt feel 18th letter much.. and the master less than that.
do seem to be a lot of bandwagon jumpers right now...
-
yup i was a fan i heard of him through a friend about 4-5 years ago downloaded sum stuff been a fan since
-
I've been a fan since 1992. Always thought he was the dopest MC ever since i first heard Paid In Full, which thinking about it, i probably heard that in like 1990/91 for the first time, but wasn't really fully into rap music and the HipHop culture until '92.
-
nah only of Eric B. & Rakim.. didn't pay that much attention to the solo releases for some reason
-
yep!
always was a fan of rakim, kane etc before i got into westcoast music
-
I've been a fan of his ever since I first listened to Paid In Full. One of the greatest MC's ever no doubt.
-
lol
for some reason i think some of you are not telling the truth :-X
i'm not a fan of rakim, i only like the songs i know (and that are not a lot) ;)
-
i was. I brought the 18th letter.. Bumped it.. then a week later he was signed to aftermarth.
I downloaded his shit coz a homie suggested it 2 me.
-
i never listened to eric b and rakim.but when rakim 18letter drop i was hyped.and from then i was always a big fan of him
-
First track I heard was Know The Ledge when the Juice soundtrack dropped (that's Ra playing drums and sax on that track, trivia buffs). Then I copped the Don't Sweat The Technique album - dope, The Punisher was my joint ("If he don't believe what I said / I'm pushing his eyeballs waaaaay into the back of his head")
Got Follow The Leader on vinyl and The 18th Letter (shudder) on tape for £1.50 ;), and that's it. He's a lyrical genius who unfortunately has never had consistent producers behind him other than Premier.
-
i had heard of him and heard his stuff and thought it was ok and shit but hell no i wasnt even close to being a fan but i just imagine how he is gonna sound over dre production and with the perfectionism of both of them.....the cd should be amazin
-
for some reason i think some of you are not telling the truth
-
since like 94. without dre half these fools wouldn't know who ra is..which is a fucking shame..
-
i made a topic like this a few months back......... i was, back in like 95-96 when i was 9-10 years old i had a mixtape that a cousin had given me, and Eric B Is President, Paid In Full, & I Know You Got Soul were on it + other rap songs by NWA & Big Daddy Kane etc. were on there. i wish i still had that tape for the memories........ Rakim was the first rapper I listened to i think.
-
why don't you people like 18th Letter, that album is amazing! 4.5/5 easily

I liked a few tracks, like Remember That and Been A Long Time. I didn't even hate when I heard him use the word "jiggy" on Guess Who's Back. But there were a few too many tracks like Stay A While that did nothing for me. I didn't feel it was classic Ra at all.
Wasn't there a track leaked from that album called New York to Cali? THAT was dope.

yea...some of em seem to be lyin...but im not gonna call em out...

i was never a ra fan...im still not...i like some eric b and rakim shit...his solos were aight...but i always liked krs and g rap better...they brought more to the table i think...but ur right...it is a shame...ra been out since the 80s...and just finally hes gettin exposure and acknowledged...
there is a few people who r missin from this thread...i wonder why....(cough) bandwagoners (cough)

I'm 30 years old. I've been a Rakim Fanatic since 1986 (Paid in Full) I've been reppin for Ra every since. I have had argument after argument with people about who's the GOAT. But most people, even though would put him in there top five, didn't think he was the greatest. To be a Rakim fan you must be willing the seperate production from lyrics. You can't say the song isn't good just because you don't like the beat. This is why this album will be so good, because now production will match lyrics. How can this not be a classic. I have loss sleep thinking about this album and imagining what Ra will come with to blow mind. For too long Rakim has not been given enough credit for his skills and his place in hiphop. This album will show the world that Rakim is the greatest who ever picked up the mic. And it will also allow people like me be able say "I told you so" to all na-sayers
-

-
I was a fan of Eric B. and Rakim then I got Rakim's solos...my favorite song is Microphone fiend.... ;D
-
Since "Guess Who's Back" and The 18th Letter. I love that album, 9/10. I didn't get into hip-hop until The Chronic dropped so I pretty much missed the Eric B. & Rakim days. But I caught up, I've got everything now. ;D
-
I always liked his stuff with Eric B., but I never really was a fan of his. I ain't got any albums of his, I only got mp3's. Being a huge fan of Dre of course steered more of my attention towards the man. But it's not like I didn't bump his songs or know who he was until Dre signed him. I guess I never got into his stuff very deep 'cause of the production. (Some joints are legendary both lyric AND production wise though - like Paid In Full). But now that the production's taken care of, I'm ready for an album that's next to perfect both lyric wise and production wise. 8)
Speaking of which, wouldn't it be great if Dre did all the production on the album? (Like in the good old days when albums were (at least mostly) produced by one or two guys and often came out doper than anything in the last 6-8 years.)
-
I`ve been a fan of him since 98
-
Here's (http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=27914) the old thread with the same question for anyone who is intrested.
-
I never really listened to THAT much of him besides "Let the Rhythm hit 'em" cause they played that video a lot. I never got into his music (his older shit) until about '96 or so.....I was always bumpin' Eazy-E and N.W.A. back then. Not much outside of that in the 80's!
-
but i always liked krs and g rap better...they brought more to the table
^ agreed, always thought krs was doper, same as g rap
-
i worked with a guy that claimed to be rakims cousin. i dont think he is bull shittin cuz its not like many kids my age kno who rakim is an plus if he was goin say he was related to a rapper he might as well said some1 who pushes major units. what does this have to do with did i listen to rakim b4 he signed to aftermath........ not a damn thing
-
My brother used to play Ra in the early 90's when I was a youngin. Was introduced to hip-hop with Dre, and Ra.
-
My uncle (32) has been a huge Rakim follower since Ra's debut. I heard all his albums when I was young. Never was a huge fan. I always liked KRS and Chuck D the best from that era.
-
I had always read the source, so I knew he was regarded as #1. The first time I really checked for him was when he made his "comeback" on the hoodlum soundtrack with mobb deep. Then I got the 18th letter when it came out, but I wasn't really feelin it. He had dope lyrics, but weak beats. So when he signed to aftermath, I was pretty effin excited.
-
1991/92
-
ok....seems like I'ma be the only one that's honest. lol. nah, I never was into him before this. BUT I am really hyped for this album comin out now cuase I have heard what he can do and I'm a sucker for good production. I know I'll get both from this release. I think it don't really matter. if you into him now or before. just cuase you weren't into him before, dosen't mean you can't get into him now. Alot of peeps forgot who Dre was before 2001 dropped. (I'm talkin about the music industry) Alot of peeps weren't fans of Em till he was with Dre. Same with 50. alot of peeps wasn't into pac till deathrow. some didn't know of Xzibit till Bitch Please. Just like many peeps around the world are gonna be like WTF with this 213 record. just cuase they don't know the history on the group, does that mean they don't have the right to buy it? no. so it really don't matter. you have the right to like any body you want, even if your weren't down with them since day one. Dre has that power to boost your hype.

Since "Paid In Full"
-
I knew Rakim because all of his Paid in Full shit was on the radio. I was a fan, I liked his work. I used to quote him, like I came in the door, you know, the common stuff. After that, I kinda lost track, because i was all about the west, and east coast wasn't for me. I liked Master Ace, and Tribe and Gangstarr out the east, but that's about it. Rakim was still nice to me, then I noticed how people ranked him, and so i bought the Master. Didn't like it, but I did also get his greatest hits. I knew all the damn songs, as I've heard him for so long. The Paid in Full shit I knew backwards and forwards, because I recorded them on my tape when it was on the radio and I memorized the songs. The rest, we'll just say gangsta rap took over my life. But hey, when got with Dre, by that time i knew most his songs, I didn't check up on him because of Dre, but his Source rankings in 1998.
-
Since "When I B On The Mic", I taped that song off the radio and had it on like constant rotation for like four weeks until I bought the album.
-
i heard of rakim in 2001-2002 and ever since then, ive been hearing his stuff till today, and i've become a fan.
peace

same here..i will always consider g rap the king of ny. 3 classic albums..never showed any signs of even slightly falling off..and just released his first mediocore album in 15+ years thanks to production..no one else is fucking with him except maybe the teacher..

KRS would take him out IMO....but G Rap is right there behind him...he and KRS are the blueprint for every east coast gangsta...they were talkin street shit...before it was the norm...not to mention...G Raps multi style is bein abused by every rapper out now...anyone who would deny G Raps status doesnt know hip hop....

Not everyone on wcc is lying bout this. I seen alot of Ra love since the first day I signed up here. As for myself, I'm lookin foward to the album, but I've never been a huge Rakim fan. I downloaded an Eric B/Rakim greatest hits album 3 years ago, and it is a great album, and showcases how much todays artists stole Ra's style. But to be honest, him signing to aftermath is the main reason i'm anticipating this album.

True, I'd like to hear him over some Dre beats...
-
If Rakim could come deep on his albums, then I'd be a fan. Till then, fuck no. I'm not a fan of his now either.

Do you actually ever read anybody's posts?
Yes
I don't know if you are being sarcastic, if I'm missing something or what but I found your statement odd.
