Tonight was a special night in Puff Daddy's restaurant Justin's. Tonight, the media and press invited witnessed 3 and a half hours of Samoan power. The Boo Yaa TRIBE was celebrating the release of their brand new recording West Koasta Nostra and showed up at around 7:30, along with Battlecat, who produced their entire new album, and a gang of other people. The DJ of the night was none other than DJ Premier from Gangstarr, and he put on a hell of a show. Among the guests were MTV, The Source, Sway, countless other press people, and of course dubcnn.com. Ice T, who was supposed to host the show, somehow didn't show up, which was kind of dissapointing, but didn't make the night any less enjoyable. After chopping it up with the people for a few minutes, the Tribe and their clique went over to the back to do a couple of interviews. The crew of Justin's did a great job serving drinks such as VSOP and food non stop to the guests, big ups to them.
The atmosphere was great, the people were in party mood, and soon after Primo grabbed the mic and welcomed everybody, and started off his great performance with a few 70's funk songs, which everybody was feeling. Although there wasn't much dancing yet, people were having a good time and Boo Yaa were getting their groove on on the little stage. Finally, they announced the new record, which they then played in its full lengh, and the speakers busted out the sounds of the first single of the group, Bang On, a Battlecat produced cut which features Mack 10 on a verse. Ganxta Ridd rapped along his verse, and you could see they were having a good time. As the record kept playing, and the crowd had a few more drinks, the event started off for real. With Boo Yaa B-Bouncin and breaking, Primo heating up the speakers, and people starting to dance, I knew everybody was feeling it. The media and press were filming and taking pictures non stop, and the group collaborated greatly, posing countless times for pictures, doing interviews, statements, and rapping into the cameras. Battlecat was on stage the whole time too, visibly high (must've been some good shit), and enjoying himself. As I chopped it up with him, he sounded real focused on making the good music happen, and he was, rightfully, proud of his work on this album. It's seriously banging. Ganxta Ridd was doing his thang, Monster O and Godfather were chilling, all in all I must say they did a good job. They rapped along most songs and stayed on stage, full of energy, straight ripping it up.
After the record finished playing, Primo laced the people with some classic old school shit, from Rakim to Biggie, scratching the songs perfectly together. By that time, everybody was up and dancing, rapping along, throwing their hands up, partying. Boo Yaa was all over the place, and Battlecat let everybody know this is East Coast West Coast united, and he was right. But to me, the highlight of the show was the moment Primo threw on Dr. Dre's beat to Bitch Please, and scratched the beat for a few minutes, then passing to Battlecat, who let Ganxta spit a bomb verse over the beat, it was truly fire. Afterwoods, Ganxta came to me and as I gave him props for his performance, he jokingly said "X can't see me!", judging by his verse, his joke could have been taken seriously...! Soon after, Primo announced the end of the party, and after a few minutes, most people were leaving, I'm sure they were all glad to have been part of this. I wish the Tribe best of luck for the new record and hope they finally get the recognition they should have been getting for years, for putting in all this work in the game.
