NEW YORK -- A gang of five alleged transgender police officer impersonators are under arrest Thursday night.

Police say the members of the gang were armed with handcuffs and a fake gun. When they approached their male victims on the street late at night, they claimed to be cops, and then they would handcuff the victim, steal his wallet or ATM card and credit cards, police say. The gang was a group of teenage men dressed as women, often wearing wigs.

 

In one incident, a victim allegedly was left handcuffed to a lamppost as the transgender gang made its getaway. Police say the gang may have committed anywhere from six to 15 robberies.

Police sources identify the transgender robbery suspects as Gerald "Kimberly" Howard, Kevin "Keva" Williams, Kelvin "Keisha" Howell, Brian "Whoopie" Gonzalez and Keenan "Chanel" Olivers. The group reportedly met at the Harvey Milk School, which is the gay and lesbian alternative high school in the East Village.

The suspects are all 16 and 17 years old, and are expected to be charged as adults with numerous robbery charges.
