Reasonable Doubt (1996): 5
"I had my whole life to make that. That's my favorite. It's gonna always be my favorite because it's the first."
In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (1997): 4.5
"I love Volume 1. I just did it wrong. I shot [videos for] the wrong singles. I had 'Where I'm From,' 'Streets Is Watching,' 'Imaginary Player,' I just went about it wrong. I'm thinking with two different records I would've killed that."
"Streets Is Watching" soundtrack (1998): 4
"We did the 'Streets Is Watching' movie because we just wanted to give people a background on Roc-A-Fella, how it got started, the type of people that we are. We was in the middle ground. Everybody on the underground knew what we was about. On the commercial level they didn't really know what Roc-A-Fella was about. That was the inspiration for the movie and soundtrack."
Vol. 2 ... Hard Knock Life (1998): 5
"I love Volume 2. That's my biggest album ever. I was just in a zone. Everything was just poppin.' "
Vol. 3 ...The Life and Times of S. Carter (1999): 4
"Very solid. It's a more mature album. It's a little deeper than 'Money, Cash, Hoes' and a little deeper than 'Jigga What.' It's dealing with real issues."
The Dynasty: Roc La Familia (2000): 4
"I talked about my life within that year. All the things that happened to me and the way people reacted to me, just off hearsay and off assumption. That album is so strong, so powerful."
The Blueprint (2001): 5
"The Blueprint was that foundation and everything was that one theme and it was sewed together. It's the blueprint of my life, the things that made me the way I am, that shaped me. It's all my beliefs and ideas. There's also a blueprint for rappers in this business."
The Best of Both Worlds (2002): 4
"One feeling that I have when I think about the album is blown opportunity. The whole reason the album came together was to do something creative that nobody really done before. Let's bring these two genres of music together and make something really crazy and let's go on tour and make history."
The Blueprint 2/2.1: The Gift and the Curse (2002): 3.5
"I'mma give that the lowest [rating]. Too many songs."
The Black Album (2003): 5
"My most introspective album."

You have to understand most artists would give every album of theirs a 5. :)
So I agree with Jay-Z.
-
Interesting read. To be honest the only Jay-Z album I don't really feel is Vol. 3..., but even that I wouldn't give less than 3 out of 5.
I know he has a lot of haters, but I'm a genuine fan of Jigga's. He's given us absolutely shit loads of great tunes and solid albums over a largely consistent career. And at least two albums, with my hand on my heart, I personally think are classics. Can't ask for much more.
Cheers Jigga ;)

Talk about an ego. If I was to rate the ones I own my him:
Reasonable Doubt - 4.25
Hard Knock Life - 3.25
Life & Times Of S. Carter - 3.5
Dynasty - 3.5
Blueprint - 4.25
Blueprint 2 - 3
The Black Album - 4.5
-

Exactly. He's a lil' too into himself if ya ask me. I still stand by my opinion that he's one of the most overrated rappers ever.

I respect him on sayin the truth about blueprint 2, and only givin it 3.5....
The rest is bs, except the Reasonable Doubt rating (To each there own style, huh.....)....
Lol at giving The Black Album 5.
Peace

I think his rating are pretty damn accurate...

The classics for me are Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint. The latest is good (actually it's very good), but I agree it ain't classic.

^^ Agree on this points, but actually I think in about half a year "The Black Album" will be considered a classic, although there is a bad single on it. I already think it's near classic 8) So in my opinion there are exactly (not at least or something) three classic-albums.

The Blueprint 2/2.1: The Gift and the Curse (2002): 3.5
"I'mma give that the lowest [rating]. Too many songs."
That album had the potential to be a decent release if he had just cut out all the poorer tracks (i.e Hovi Baby, As One, Bonus Tracks, etc) and just made it a 14 track LP.
*imo I'd agree that his latest isn't a classic when compared to Blueprint/Reasonable Doubt, but it's definatly a great album to finish up on. It's a shame he's not releasing anymore cds...perhaps a Jay-Z/Nas album colabo could bring him out of retirement..lol..*continues to dream* ::)

YUP.
Blueprint 2 could have been as good as #1, if he had taken the best tracks and put them onto 1 CD.
"Watcher 2", "A dream", "U don't know remix", "Guns & Roses", "Some people hate", etc..... such a potential if he had cut down on the bullshit.
Welcome back, btw.. I thought you had left for good in the summer...

Reasonable Doubt - 5 - Agree (Timeless classic)
Vol. 1 - 4.5 - agree (Almost classic, very underrated)
Streets Is Watching - 4 - agree
Vol. 2 - 5 - disagree 3.5 (Jigga's weakest solo, maybe a 5 in terms of sales and impact but not in quality)
Vol. 3 - 4 - agree
Dynasty - 4 - agree (Great album, very close to a 4.5 actually)
The Blueprint - 5 - agree (Classic, still the best album of the new millennium)
Best Of Both Worlds - 4 - disagree 3 (Weak album, should've never seen the light of day)
The Blueprint 2/2.1 - 3.5 - agree
The Black Album - 5 - disagree 4.5 (It may very well be a 5 in time, but for now that rating is a little premature. A 4.5 suits it better, still a brilliant album)
-
RD- A 5 if there ever was one
Vol. 1- I'd say a solid 4-4.5
Vol. 2- His weakest effort, but a solid 4 on the impact alone, and the amount of huge singles that came from it. To this day, I would play "money, Cash, Hoes" 10x back-to-back.
Vol. 3- See Vol. 2's ratings
Dynasty- 4.5 with this one. Jigga just had too many bangers on this album. I also like the fact all the producers on the album weren't that huge. He went with a group that had hits here and there, but not the big breakout hit. (Neptunes and Kanye West would make themselves known on this album) THis Can't Be Life= TImeless
Blueprint- Jigga Man's other 5. Took his rhyming to a whole new level, and upped the ante on any producer that came after it.
Best of Both Worlds- 3.5 I'd say. Even though it came out at the height of the controversy, it still had a lot of Club Anthems on it. Beleive me when I say tracks like "Body," and "Somebody's Girl" have been dancefloor favorites since it's release, will continue to be favorites for the next few years. It was a great party album, but neither artist was really trying.
BP 2- That's a 3.5-4. Like Jiggaman said, too much filler. Maybe he should've listened to All Eyez On Me, or Wu-Tang Forever so he would've known how a double album is supposed to be done to perfection or near-perfection. :)
The Black Album- I will reserve judgement until a few months from now, because I'm feeling it so much right now, but I don't want to call it a classic right away.

These are my ratings 8)
Reasonable Doubt - CLASSIC!!!!!! thats all
Vol.1 - dope dope dope, he was coming up
Vol.2 - his commercial peak, this is my least favorite jigga album for some reason but still a good listen
Vol.3 - love this album, BIG PIMPIN'~!!!!!!!!!!
The Dynasty - i love this album cause he chose to do something different, a westcoast sound to it with some eastcoast, one of my favorites from jigga
Streets is watching sdtrk. - didnt really care for it
Best of Both Worlds - one word FLOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blueprint - his best since RD,4.99999999999 nearly flawless, fuck it CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!
Blueprint - too many songs but still dope, could have been up there with Blueprint 1
Black Album - not as good as Blueprint but still his third best album, good way to go out
-
I don't wanna post all my ratings, but I have to say that "Life & Trimes Of S. Carter" is his worst album - it's also the only one I didn't buy yet 8) My favourite's of him are "Reasonable Doubt" (it's just a style that he never reached again), "The Blueprint" and "The Black Album".
-
lol@jayz ratings..............but im sure any rapper ratin their own shit would mostly rate their shit high as fuck
peace
-
Best of Both Worlds- It was a great party album, but neither artist was really trying.
Fuck the hating, that's the truth right there... props.
-
well I guess the artist can't always be 100% objective towards his own work, I aslo feel VOL2 was his weakest release. It was the album with which he broke into the mainstream and I understand why he may have rated it high, though, truth be told, VOL2 was a joke from a HipHop head prespective.
-
he rated vol. 1 & 2 and the dynasty a bit too high, but basically i agree with him and it seems quite honest to me
