Ok i picked these 2 albums for the poll because these are the ones hailed as classics and Quiks best work yet to most (Quik-)Fans. But even 6 years later I cant decide which one is better. I guess it depends on my mood, sometimes its "Safe + Sound", and sometimes "Rhytmalism". But Safe + Sound is definitley more gangsta, and I love the P-Funk feel it has on the entire album. "Rhytmalism" had a more friendly feel but was a musical perfection. They came out right after the other but are completely different.
Safe + Sound is a pure classic imo. 5 out of 5, Rhythmalism had one or two average ones, thats why I give it a 4.9/5, so I guess Ill go with Safe + Sound. But you can listen to both albums all the way through, thats for sure. but you shouldn't vote unless you have peeped both
The most underappreciated artist in hip hop period. His entire collection has the most replay value than anything else in Hip Hop.
-
Tough choice.
I'll queue both up (after street gospel. hehe) and come back later :)
-
Both are 5 mics, i really dunno.
-
ima go with safe + sound
but like you said, it depends on the mood
sometime me and my homies just bumpin the whole quik catalog
from afternoon to early morning..aint no stoppin it
-
Queue them up? U dont have them already seer? *E-bitch slaps Overseer*
Im gonna go with Rhythmalism because it has a more modern sound to it, which I prefer. Dont get me wrong, as Jay said both are nearly flawless, but I just find Rhythmalism better.
'So Many Wayz', '2gether Again', 'Use a Gangxta', 'Pitch it on a Party', 'Down Down Down', 'Medley for a V'... man I love em all
-
queue up to play in winamp :P *e-bitch slaps tobytizzle back*
(currently listening to diggin u out..)
-
hmm...i voted "safe & sound", but they are really, really close together!

so many ways...
hand in hand
down down down...
i useta know her...
cmon! :P

I'll go for a tie cause I can't really pick one over the other. Both are classic and, as said, there are times you feelin S+S more or R-A-I. Matter of fact, you can't go wrong with a Quik album. Not even with UTI.
-
Safe & Sound but it's close

I feel the same. Rhytmalism is more of a "feeling good" album while Safe + Sound is a bit more hardcore.
Both are extremely good, period.
-
Safe + Sound
Quik got in that azz in 95' with this 1...
Gangsta shitt/mixxed with that Q style..
= Classic RAW all Quik.
Hatesrats 2oooIV
(Love.."Rhytmalism"...)
Mausberg, Sugafree....
(Quik's newer crew at the time) ect
stole the show on that 1 tho...ImO

Very hard to choose, but I'd give Rhythmalism the slight edge. It was just more complete, well-rounded and polished as an album. Includes my all-time favorite Quik song (We Still Party) and just countless other classics. Plus the whole slow-down during mid-album before going back to uptempo is a really nice touch.
Safe & Sound - Classic. Rough around the edges but that's part of its appeal. Very street but still very smooth. Couple of tracks I don't play too often but still a great collection of songs and a nice snapshot of the whole west coast scene of the time.
-
Both are some of my alltime faves bein the big quik fan i am.....and as for your question i think i'd go with Rythmalism, simply because every track is dope, the beats are perfect, the feelin of the album is amazin and quik gives it his all.....
i do however like safe n sound better, when im in the mood for some funked out G-Shit.....
-
My opinion on this changes wayyyyyy too much. Right now, I'd definitely go with Rhythm-al-ism. Musically it can't be fucked with. Lyrically, though, Safe + Sound kills it.
-
I agree with most people's views on these albums but I choose Rhythm-Al-Ism.
Both albums are great but neither are classics. Maybe DJ Quik classics, but not classic albums. Just cause an album is great doesn't make it a classic.
-
damn its a tie for me, i think safe n sound, got that g'd up vibe which i can dig, but Rhythmalism got that complete feel about the album..............
-
Tie. Too hard to choose.
-
Rhythmalism cause he tried different chyt.
-
Safe+Sound was tuffer with more solid focused production.
-
And what about Rhythmalisms intro? :o
Oh, and "We're running out of babies!" lol

if you wanna try to say, that quik aint got no classic album out
then there is nothing out there that even comes close to the term classic album...
-
Rhythmalism!
-
I'm gonna choose Rhythm-al-ism because every song on there is a classic and stands out on its own. Safe and Sound is also a great album, but there are less classic songs on it.
-
I would pick Rhthymalism over Safe and Sound. Rhythmalism is so far ahead of it's time. I think it will be another decade before heads really understand and can soak in the significance of this album as far as shaping the sound of hip hop musically.
Now if I pit Rhthymalism vs Balance and Options, I'd probably go with Balance and Options only because it's my all time favorite Quik album.
-
u would rate balance & options higher than rhythm-al-ism?????
ok your opinion but not mine!

For a while I had thought Balance & Options was better than Rhythm-al-ism. I don't anymore, but I could see why somebody would. Lyrically B&O is a lot better.

Balance and Options stayed in my cd player for 3 years until I let my brother borrow it, who doesn't listen to hip hop and he won't give it back. That album brings back memories of college, partying, just having fun. I've made a lot of my friends DJ Quik fans because of that cd.
-
i'm a balance and options fan
-
Safe and Sound because it has more classic tracks than Rythm-al-ism
-
Gotta be Rhythmalism. One of my favorite westcoast albums ever. Safe + Sound was simply a classic, but I think Rhythmalism was that much better.
-
I think Safe & Sound is better. It's a perfect summertime cd.
-

Exactly...B&O was my favorite Quik album for a long ass time. I remember I thought Safe + Sound was good but not more when I first got it, I guess its an album that grows on you after a while. But they switched positions as my fav album. and this poll is a close one btw
-
my vote went for safe & sound. sure it can be seen as a more cookie cutter cd against all the creativity in rhythm al ism, but to me safe & sound's music is much more timeless for me...
both are great cd's and should not be missed
~oh and yeah i also think balance and options is almost on the same level as these two....B&O only has a couple weak songs that hold it back
-
Both albums are perfect, IMO. But I have to go with Safe+Sound, which has been my all-tim-favourite-album since it droped. Production is incredible, and you can hear Quik's hungry. And for me this album brings a lot of good memories back....
-
I agree with everyone else that says its a "mood" thing. When I feel like hearing that mid 90's funk shit (which is like everyday) I throw in Safe & Sound. When I'm kickin it or going on a long driver I'll listen to Rhythmalism. With tracks like Whateva U Do, Thinkin Bout U, So Many Ways, El's Interlude, Youz A Gangsta etc that shit can help you relax for real.
In my opinion Safe & Sound should definately get the nod as a 5 mic hip hop classic. Matter of fact you might as well say its a 6 mic album considering The Source named Scarface-The Fix, Outkast- Aquemini, Biggie-Life After Death, Nas-Stillmatic, Jay-z Blueprint all 5 mic classics. I cant name more than 3 tracks from any of these besides Outkast & Biggie. Lets think about this for a second/Are these albums on the same level of Safe & Sound and Rythmalism? In my humble opinion, HELL NO!!

It's a matter of tastes. If you ask anyone from the East which album is best: Jay-Z, Nas or DJ Quik they'll probably say "DJ what?".

F!ck that matter of tastes sh!t. Safe & Sound is one of the few classic albums in hip hop history. Just cause East Coast niggas haven't heard of Quik it doesn't mean we should rate him low because its not up to their standards or whatever the f!ck.
Its too bad the major media outlets are East Coast based though.(Source, MTV, BET) Sh!t I even heard 100.3 the beat in Los Angeles is owned by the same East Coast company that owns Hot 97 in NYC. They don't hear our shit but I'm sure all of you in LA can vouch for me when I say that there is no shortage of East Coast artists on the radio in Cali. Its been like that for a little while.
-
im goin 4 Safe + Sound, i like the more G stuff but rhythmalism is tite 2
-
depends on the situation...both are very dope
-

LMAO
I think you're going a little far there sweetheart.
-
I think I'm alone on this, but I think "Under the Influence" is Quiks best CD.

I dont think it's the best, but I think UTI is one hell of a banging album, I love it.
