Title: question about mixtapes
Post by: ACGRUNDY on February 27, 2004, 12:19:27 AM
so since all these mixtapes have come out within the last year and lots of rappers use other rappers beats, I was wonderin some things.

do they need any permission to use a beat for a mixtape?  is it legal to use other peoples beats?

I know some places be sellin mixtapes, so doesn't that make it illegal that they used someone else's beats?

can anyone put out a mixtape with any beats they want on it and sell it and legally get away with it?

so if I got 15 instruments of extremely popular songs, and rapped over them, and didn't have a barcode on the album, I couldn't get sued?  Even if the songs ended up being very popular and I sold a lot?

has anyone ever heard a mixtape song on the radio that reuses a beat?  Such as someone rapping over the in the club beat?  Can they play those songs on the radio?

acgrundy.. technically no.

example.. that danger mouse jay-z 'whtie album' thing over beatles songs.

basically if it did blow up and hit the charts.. they'd be after you, outside that. you can most likely get away with it within the rap industry.
