From hiphop-central.com
So here is the deal, yesterday on WGCI 107.5 FM they reported that Common has signed a deal with Roc-A-Fella/Interscope. Now for those of you who know your major label relationships, you would know that the Roc is under Def Jam’s umbrella, not Interscope’s.
So here is where things get more interesting. Like every successful artist these days, Kanye West has been given his own imprint (Very Good Music), and it is said to be a joint deal with Roc-A-Fella and Interscope. It looks like those Chicago boys are sticking together.
But wait, it gets better. Earlier yesterday Matt Conaway at hiphopsite addressed the rumor of Common signing to Kanye’s imprint...but not just Common, Pharoahe Monch as well. Talk amongst yourselves...
Could be interesting

I'm unsure if this is good or bad news.
-
This wouldnt suprise me one bit. It would be a great move IMO, because Common would get some real dope production, promotion, and I think on Rocafella he would have the creative freedom to make the album he wanted to ie: College Dropout.
-
i think its a great move, 1) ofcourse production, 2) rocafella lost jay z, they need someone to step up, and they WILL drop his album, and let him be himself on it
-
hmm................I really don't know.
He would definitely get his album out like WB said but it was a move I really wasn't expecting. not a bad move if true, just surprising :o
-
Bah...I don't like Common...But that would be sweet if Pharoah Monche signed though...
-
Common & Kanye... who would have known... ::)
-
rocafella lost jay z
Was this confirmed yet?
-
Common & Kanye... who would have known... ::)
Anyone who knows that Kanye's mentor used to be Common's producer. ;)
-
man i like this move...common and kanye are dope together of course...and i think common would fit well on the roc roster. i just hope he doesnt start seriously reppin roc and wearin roc jerseys and rocawear and shit...i like how common has his own style whether it be music or just him.
-
Common & Kanye... who would have known... ::)
not like they havent worked together before..
-
common's definitely one of the tightest rappers around, so i think its a great move. i also think kanye should get movin and sign the mighty Pharoahe Monch as well.
ps what happened to talib kweli/mos def signing? is that still on the cards, or was it just another rumour that was proved untrue?
-
all you guys sayin it would be a good move are gonna be the same guys bitchin when common goes more commercial - everyone wanna be down until it happens then they regret it......
personally i wanna see kanye and common do an album together, with guest appearances by the ones that common always does guest appearances with - talib, bilal, cee lo, d'angelo, erykah.....if any of the other roc artists are on it, i think it'll blow........
-
To Jome the Common/Kanye relationship has always been well known about, and like SGV said No I.D is Kanye's mentor.
To everyone else, did you actually read my post or did you just read the title, cause it you look inside the article it actually said that it was likely to be a joint deal between Rocafella/Interscope on Kanye's label. Therefore I would find it very unlikely that any Rocafella artists other than Kanye will be featured on the album. I mean look at Kanye's album, only ROC artists on there were Jay Z and Freeway, and hes actually signed to the ROC straight up.
And JT Platinum, Common ain't gonna go commercial because he knows that after Electric Circus he needs to come back with an amazing hiphop album to get himself back up there in the game. I think the only producers you gonna be seeing on his album are probably gonna be Kanye/No I.D/Premier maybe/been talk of 9th Wonder/maybe one Neptunes track. I can just tell its gonna be a really amazing album, and there is no chance of him selling out. If the album is successful it will be because its a quality album.

personally, i liked electric circus. i didn't really mean that common was gonna sell out if he went 'more commercial' - i mean, look, he did COCA COLA commercials a few years ago.....i meant that people are going to BITCH that he's gone pop cuz he's on the roc. not to say that he's really going to go pop, he'll probably be doper than he was before. but i'm saying that people always bitch in here because of an association with someone else. everyone bitches that dre ruins talented underground acts. honestly, i think common is gonna be the same regardless, i just hope he doesn't sell out to the roc. i think people are going to bitch regardless of how much or little he's changed when he's on the roc.
i think people bitch with no real evidence. hell, i could care less what record label any artist is on. but, like i said, i think too many people put too much emphasis and are too harsh on which record label someone is on....and that's what i was commenting on...
-
Yeah Electric Circus was dope on an experimental tip but it wasn't really a hiphop album. Being on Kanye's imprint will just mean he gets a lot of Kanye production which I have no problem with. I see what you are saying, but people who go purely on label affiliation are stupid anyway.

To Jome the Common/Kanye relationship has always been well known about
It's okay, Jome is very uninformed when it comes to Hip-Hop...He thinks Premo and Neptunes have a similar sound.

No shit it's well known about.
Still people act like they would have been a wack combo, including MC Shitty.
Premo and Neptunes is 2 different worlds, don't act like I ever compared them.
Out of ALLL the dope rappers out there, this is what you call a supergroup? LMAOOOO...Twista raps allll fast about bitches and weed, and Common raps allll slow about conscious shit.....Nick Cannon, WC, and Mos Def?
Need I remind you of this.. ?
You can't be up to date on neither Twista or Common at all.
Try checking out their albums, it's recommended ;)

lol
i think common could drop a dope album on the ROC, especially with the list of producers Waitin For The DJ mentioned...and i do think it's a smart move, he'll get good promotion and he'll prolly still be able to drop a record that ain't "sell-out" (i hate this term lol)

those are exactly my feelings. btw: i really liked common's last album but it couldn't touch like water for chocolate.
