Well, I sort them by artist in one big list. So I've got an alphabetical list of all songs I got...works well for me. The names I give are like this: 'Bad Azz f Snoopy Collins,Kokane,Suga Free & Goldie Loc- Dogghouse Ridaz'

what about things like compilations

at the moment i'm thinking something like this..

for artists..

Above The Law

Dogg Pound, Tha (DPG)
  Dogg Food
  DPG 2002

Daz Dillinger (Dat Nigga Daz)
  Retaliation, Revegne..

Kurupt
   Kuruption

and..

[compilations and mixtapes ]
    [mixtapes]
       dj lt dan
    [soundtracks]
       training day
    [labels]
         tha row
               tgfr
               dysfunktional
         iv life
              vol 1
              vol 1.4
         doggystyle (dogghouse)
             bones
             welcome to the house

but i'm confused e.g. 'the wash' was a  aftermath/doggystyle venture.. lol

sounds like too much hassle doesnt it, lol

i use musicmatch jukebox

i add the track tags like this (example)
artist: Tha Alkaholiks
track title: All The Way Live (ft. Q-Tip and King Tee)
album title: Coast 2 Coast
ect..
and it's in an alphabetical order

music match has a good library, so it looks like this:

well, I'm sort of a perfectionist.  here is how I do it.

one folder called full albums, the other folder called tagged.

Full albums folder>title of artist/compilations/soundtracks>name of the album>songs

tagged>name of the artist>songs

then in the full albums I have the tracks numbered and named, such as Daddy V's the compton og:

03. Get Ya Bang on f WC, Tha Chill (thats how it looks in explorer)

then for the tagged, its just my folder of random songs by the artist, such as Daddy Rich:

Keep it gangsta f Mr. Trocc, MC Eiht, Tha Chill

then I play all my songs in winamp, and I try to keep them named in there too.

Problem is this takes a lot of time to do, and I am way behind.  I now have over 10,000 mp3's on my computer, and a shitload of them are not named the way I want, but at least they are in the right folder.   I just hope to be rich one day and pay someone to do all this for me.  and I pretty much don't keep any full albums on my computer that I own OG except for a few, just cause I try to save on space.   I have 47 gigs of music on my harddrive right now, on an 80 gig HD.  but I also have other shit on there, so I am always short on room, even tho I also have a 30 gig hd too.  so, when I get the funds I am gonna buy a 100 gig HD and keep that strictly for music.  and I have no backups of my music, so if my hd went out, I would be extremely screwed  :'( :-\ :-[ :( anyone got any advice on what I could do for this? besides burning them all?  cause once before I burned all of my mp3's (when I had way less) onto cd's in mp3 format, and now my cdrom can't even read them.

you could buy an extrernal HD, i have one and i've put all my important/rare shit on it (school projects, rare clips, rare mp3s ect..)
just hook it up to ur pc (using an USB plug) and u could just copy all songs u have and paste them in the HD
u can remove all ur mp3s from ur pc after ure done and just play the songs from the extrernal HD, thats what i did before i became a cd-addict

hell yeah shits cheap as fuck these days.. if u look back up i already said i have a 160 gig external!

but... what i'm hoping to do is put my new '2nd machine' somewhere outta the way and have remote network control over it, and get something that does a backup onto it from my main machine :)

so desktop will have 160 + 160 external
network will have 120 + 80

not sure what i'mma do with the other 40 i'll have left over :)

the full albums system you described is what it looks like i'm going to go for, but i want to put single tracks etc in the artist folders too :)

they are just in a few spots on my mac but all i do is open them on itunes and then sort it out on itunes if anything with playlist and you can sort it by date and all that shit.....just let itunes handle them all and itunes has a feature where you hit the apple key and R and it shows you the file on the computer....so that works for me if im ever looking for a certain mp3 file....i think for the pc itunes its the same shit just prob different button combo look in the menus up top of itunes for it..
Title: Re:How do you organise your music?
Post by: Don Breezio on March 13, 2004, 10:59:13 AM
yeah i have itunes and i use it the same way...but i kinda like the musicmatch system better...i just need to reinstall it...but the way i have my shit organized is just in the "My Music" folder and i have folders for each artists (alphabetically) and then if i have any full albums of that artist it stays outside the folders. so the folders for each artist are just for the misc. shit...it would look something like this:

Nas
Nas-On_The_Real-(Promo_CDS)-2004-CHR

those are both seperate folders.

best way is to seperate albums for seperate rapper and seperate type of songs eg

2pac -mix 1 slow jams mix
2pac-mix 2 hard jams mix

or just do 2pac mix with all his type of songs mixed the above works for me

I throw all my shit into one folder titled "Full Albumz."  I have every album in a seperate folder, and all the single tracks in one special folder.  I play everything through Winamp, and I have a playlist of pre-sorted songs that I like (I never add a full album, I add just the tracks I like to the playlist.)  The playlist is sorted alphabetically and I have the titles like this so that the song title is always alphabetized according to artist.
"DJ Quik - Get 2Getha Again ft. AMG, 2nd II None, Hi-C, and El Debarge"
All the other songs that aren't in my playlist don't really look like this, but I don't give a fuck because I don't really listen to them.

I just got a new computer and I've been going thru the same shit...

I've done a bunch of thinking about it, and I decided I'd start utilizing the power of playlists....

I've got the folders:

/Albums
/Mixtapes
/Compliations
/Singles
/Temp
/Misc
/Playlists

I put the proper Mp3's into the proper section, and then In the playlist folder I've got all the artists with their seperate folders.
For Example, In the Dr. Dre playlist folder I've got these playlists:

"All Retail Albums.m3u
Chronic.m3u
Aftermath Presents.m3u
Chronic 2001.m3u
Guest Apperances.m3u
Soundtracks.m3u
productions.m3u
unreleased.m3u"

It took me a good 3 or 4 days to get it all done, but I think it's really worth it and it makes it REAL easy to listen to your music. There are gonna be some overlaps in the playlists EX: Doggystyle in Dre's productions playlist and Doggystyle in Snoops retail albums playlist, but I don't really mind.

That's how I've been doing it and It's worked Pretty well.

This is how I do it:

D:\ARCHIVES: All kindsa tracks by my favorite artists, dubbed "ARCHIVES", only dope artists, no filler.

E:\GANGSTASHIT: Folder with misc. tracks for various obscure rappers, with sub-folder "NEW SINGLES"

F:\MIXTAPE SHIT: misc. artists with DJ's screaming, so I can't use them for CD's.

L:\Musicvideoz

L:\NEW ALBUMS - ONLY the newest albums, when I get bored they go into old albums section.
L:\OLD ALBUMS - Older, classic and dope albums that's worth keeping. 73 albums yet, just started collecting..

(L-drive is my 250G external harddrive)

Works perfect, easy to config, and easily accessable when I have set Winamp up to find the new shit..  8)

I dont bother with music on the comp... i usually just take an album from my room with me to the comp, or stream songs that have just leaked etc on ( eg. dubcnn, WCA ), or I chuck on a music dvd on the TV...

used to have a fair few mp3z, collected all rare DR shit, but cbf stuffing round with them all now, so I just buy my music and thats that.

This is the way i Arrange my music.

I created a new drive with my music, d:

I have a folder called Albums, with all my Albums, EPs, Soundtracks, Compilations, Mixtapes & Bootlegs.

Soundtrack: [Artist] = [OST]
Compilation: [Artist] = [VA]
Mixtape/Bootleg: [Artist] = [DJ or Artist]

/Albums
          /[Artist] - [Album] - [Year]
                                             /[Artist] - [Album] - [Track] - [Title].mp3

All my mp3 are in 192kpbs, with M3U/SFV/NFO. Properly tagged. All my albums have a small jpeg cover art.

I use http://www.cdtag.com/ for tagging.

If you have Windows Player and have tagged your MP3's properly, you can create some sick playlists.

If your tag your mp3's like this:

Artist: Nas
Title: Life's A Bitch (feat. AZ)
Album: Illmatic

With the guest artist in (feat. ) in the song title field. If you do that, you can create a Auto Playlist and just create parameter with all the songs with Jay-Z in the title field, and ALL of jigga's guest appearnaces pop-up. And it will be updated whenever you add new music.

You can do this with productions by filling out the composer field in advanced tag editing.
