Title: MORE about northern california bay area trend setting... please read.. (funk)
Post by: We Fly High on March 29, 2004, 01:50:06 AM
im sorry, i was on the east coast this past week in nyc, so wasnt able to check up on this forum, or else i would have posted up about this topic.. its locked now.. but i felt like adding a little.. i think its important..

if you guys know your history of music, you will know that the funk sound was originated in the bay area.. namely SLY & THE FAMILY STONE. this group has done influenced and idolized by everyone from miles davis to geroge clinton to temptations to dr dre to stevie wonder to herbie hancock to prince to michael jackson. none of them would be here without sly and the family stone. michael jackson idolized them so much that he purchased their publishing rights. all of the artists i mentioned show strong traces of sly's bay area funk sound in their music.

The first funk hip hop records have come from the Bay Area. DJ Slice and Kool Rock J sampled Knee Deep in their classic song "slice it up" in 1986. hammer fused the pfunk sound into his song "they put me in the mix" in 1987. Digital underground got the funk in full effect with "underwater rimes". Dave Kaos from the bay area, also did cuttin and scratchin on some of george clinton's albums.  Oakland was the city where George Clintons Parliament/Funkdaelic mothership first landed in 1976. George clinton has very strong ties to the bay area, and they are so strong that he recorded part of his live album p funk earth tour in the oakland coliseum. On digital undergrounds Sons of the P(arliament) album.. they were considered very ahead of their time cos of their use of the moog synthesizer...  which has influenced artsits like snoop dogg and ice cube to start utlizing that device..

Dr dre credits his chronic and doggystyle sound heavily to the pfunk sound esp george clinton.. but man.. where did geroge clinton get this sound ?? he was a student of the bay area product "sly and the family stone"............hope you learned somethin..

looks like the bay has one up on LA.

I really can't say that any of what you said is wrong because I have never heard a lot of it, but it could be true.

When you say Sly and the fam influenced the temptations, in what way? If I am correct, Sly came in the 70s, and the temptations came in the 60s. Miles came in the 60s. Herbie and Michael came in the 60s. So if Sly did come in the 60s, was their influence really that strong to these artists? I never knew of them influencing all of them, maybe in their later music, but not as far as what they were doing when they first came out.
I know George Clinton is from somewhere like New Jersey or somewhere in the east coast or midwest. Also, I know Roger troutman was from Ohio. So I don't know how much of his influence is related to the bay.
Other than that, props for the info, but I won't say I do or don't believe some of the info. And instead of sayin "the bay has one up on L.A." it should be more like "the west has one up on the east" because they are the ones that don't even aknowledge the west's presense.

yeah disregard the one up on LA comment..

sly actually came in during the 60's..  and yeah his influence was that strong on these artists.. i have read various interviews in which geroge clinton has firmly and boldly stated that SLY was the greatest funk band of all time. I have also read interviews in which the Jackson Five have claimed that SLY was their biggest influence.

for the way in which sly influenced the temptations. you can just listen to songs like "cloud 9", "run away child, running wild", "psychadelic shack" , and "ball of confusion" which reflect the psychadelic sounds and genre that sly created. sly also influenced their style and their appearance, which is related to the influence that sly had on the creator of Motown,  Berry Gordy.. berry was known to run motown in a way in which he controlled everything, standardized songwriting, using the same band to create a standard sound, and controlling the apperance of their artsits. berry tried to model the apperance of some of his artists after Sly.

sly also influenced herbie hancock, on his headhunters album.. released in the early 70's.. this quote comes straight from herbie hancocks official homepage biography:

"In 1973, Headhunters, the second LP in his new deal with Columbia Records, became jazz's first platinum album. With its Sly Stone-influenced hit single "Chameleon," this album (and its follow-up Thrust) signaled, once and for all, that Herbie Hancock would not be pigeonholed or categorized"..

herbie even has a song on the headhunters album called "SLY", which is an obvious tribute to the group.

sly has also influenced jimi hendrix, on his album "band of gypsys" in which he has a cover of sly's "sing a simple song" at the begining of "We Gotta Live Together".

as im speaking, im reading a dr dre interview in the book "it aint about a salary" in which he credits SLY as one of his major influences.

by the way, since we're on the topic of funk... i was in NYC this past week and was able to catch a sold out show of geroge clinton and the pfunk all stars at the Bb kings blue bars and grill (hands down the best venue ive ever been to, and ive been to like over 20 shows in various venues)... Shock G made a guest apperance with the funny nose/glasses get up. and geroge had his granddaughter "sativa" rap a few verses on stage.. probably the best concert ive been to besides up in smoke.. the sound that they have is just incredible.. it was so funny seeing all the old ass folks that grew up on george all funkin and singing the lyrics.. seeing a 60+ white woman just waving her hands singing "to the window to the walls, to the sweat drop down my balls..." was just great..  highlight of the performance was probably "flashlight"... im so glad i went.. i'll have pictures up in a few days..

Why are people in the Bay so obsessed with Los Angeles? i've lived here for 3 years now and still nobody can't give me a good answer.

Because they want to prove themselves...We have nothing to prove, so we don't give a fuck, and let them do all the talking...LOL

It's because L.A. cats got big ego's, like New Yorkers. It's funny, L.A. heads cry and complain about NY peeps hating on them and not giving them credit. Then they go and act the same way with Bay cats. See me, I'm from L.A., but I got much love for the Bay. I been frequenting the Bay since I was born. From Daly City, San Bruno, Oakland to Richmond. That's all home-away-from-home for me. Fuck the bullshit. The Bay is just as important as L.A.

Hmm..you might be right but I donno. I am from L.A., and personally I don't hear many people even debatin Bay vs. L.A., most people I know are just for the west coast period. But on this website, it seems like The bay vs. L.A. is similar to Jersey vs. New York at my college. Many people from Jersey realize NY is the head of damn near everything, such as rap, fashion, etc. but they say that NY people are cocky and that they have taken some things from Jersey and don't give credit.

But also at my college, even though it's in Florida, I never realized that L.A. and the Bay were so separate. I figured it would be all one California since we are so far away from home, but the Bay cats stick together and L.A. cats stick together, we don't really come together as a whole til somebody is like "fuck the west coast" and dudes want to fight and all, which is bullshit but thas the only time we unite. It seems like a lot of people from the bay do feel like L.A. gets credit for everything, and it's like when somebody is like "oh you from california, are u from l.a.?" or they will ask them stuff about things that only pertain to L.A. and they get mad. As far as L.A. dudes, many of them are cocky, but they still seem to respect Bay area people more than people in most down south cities just becuase we are more similar.

But this arguement is somethin that is stupid to me but will probably never end.

From my personal experience it IS Bay versus LA most of the time with these dudes. At least the Bay stays connected with Dago though. Fuck the middle man  ;)

I'd hope u aren't talkin to me. If so, your post isn't really reflectin what I think like and what I see. What "streets" are you talkin about first of all? I donno what you are referrin to, but I have a grip of homeboys in L.A., mainly black but of other races, and most of us could give a fuck less about L.A. vs. the bay. When we see E-40 or Too Short on TV or hear him outside of L.A., we might not react as if it is Suga Free or Snoop, but we are still like hell yeah, that's west coast shit. But how the fuck are you gonna generalize an ENTIRE city/county/part of a state??? That's like me sayin "all people in san fransisco are gay" or "all people in Utah are mormons and are racist." That is beyond ignorant. We are all cocky in what way? It's a lot of dudes in L.A. who like NY music more than they like any west coast music, and many dudes who like NY style of dress better than west coast style, if you want to say we have one. So what would you consider them to be?

The thing with me is that I am from L.A., so of course I rep it, and I know a lot more about it and the artists. But when I hear an artist from the Bay, I could care less that he's from the bay, if he's dope he's dope, if he's wack he's wack, just as it is with L.A. rappers. I understand some dudes from L.A. may be cocky or biased, but PLEASE don't generalize and shit because then you will have people like me, who aren't even involved in the dumb ass arguement, to have to hit u up with what I feel like. And am I the one that said L.A. is the head of everything and that makes Bay cats jealous, or are you talkin to somebody else? Because I haven't seen anybody in the thread say that, so if you are talkin to me, kill it because I didn't say that. So let me know if you are directin your comments at me.

Well I didn't realize the convo had shifted from music to the streets. When u talk about surenos and nortenos, it sounds like that is hispanics that you are talkin about, and I don't know about that at all. As far as blacks and black gangs, it could be some tension between L.A. and up north, but it's a lot more tension just between black gangs in L.A., because most of them don't get along, so when I hear that there is beef between people from L.A. and the bay it's usually gang related.
