I don't like saying Rest In Peace to someone because I think he isn't resting... Man, everytime I hear a Marvin Gaye song, I get depressed as hell.  I really feel a connection with him, in a "gone too soon" type of way... he easily had one of the greatest voices of all time.  He had a troubled life, and died over some bullshit that was actually pretty courageous.  He was living with his parents, and his mom and dad got into a fight, he stepped up to his dad and broke up the fight, and his dad shot him while he lay asleep in his bed later that day.  What a horrible way to die, but he basically unwillingly traded his life for the opportunity to do the right thing, even if it meant going against the will of his own father, who he undoubtedly loved very much.  Now, that little act doesn't erase a whole lot of bad things Marvin did in his life, but I like to think all the trouble he suffered in life was eased a little bit at his death.  He cheated on his wife with Tammi Terrell, his duet partner at Motown, but even though he hurt his wife doing that, he was hurt even more when Tammi died of a brain tumour at 21 years old!  He was addicted to drugs, but suffered punishment from that when through the 70's he couldn't even find work because nobody trusted him to stay straight long enough to get to a concert in time.

I think about Marvin a lot, I always think about a few things; him singing with Tammi in some old video I saw, and how happy he looked, how great his and her voices were, just truly amazing, raw talent.  I think about his appearance at the '83 NBA allstar game shortly before his death, where he amazed or disgusted the audience with his rendition of the National Anthem, which I thought was inspired... and the last thing I think about is his performance on Motown 25... he took the stage stoned out of his mind, and babbled for about 5 minutes about nothing... then the music busted in, and he sang the most beautiful version of "What's Going On?" I've ever heard, that was just stunning, and he was stoned out of the world, he didn't even look like he was on earth anymore.

Easily one of the most gifted musicians to ever live, it's a shame his voice is still now.
