Title: DAZ'S BEATS!!??!
Post by: vegaz on April 05, 2004, 12:08:33 PM
I know yall know about how back in the days daz(along with several other producers) accused dre of jacking his beats. But here goes some food for thought. have you noticed daz's beats never sound the same from album to album.I haven't heard a decent daz beat since raw. Ive always credited mike dean for the overall sound that dillinger and gotti had, and soopafly produced dpgc. So my question is , is daz a beat biter him self? maybe the lackluster production is due to the fact he doesnt use the same equipment, maybe he lacks the studio musicians that always seemed to help in the whole evolution of the deathrow sound.
does daz still fuck with mike dean? does daz even produce? maybe this is just another case of an artist who tries to change his sound to sound like whats popular right now. but I think most daz/dpg fans liked his old style way better. Make no mistake abut it I'm a daz supporter but it just seems like his shit aint hittin right anymore.

Daz's production is as 'up-and-down' as any producer I can think of in hip-hop.

He's never been consistent in quality. I agree with Vegaz - he's presumably had a lot of help from Dre / Soopa / Mike Dean / Quik / whoever else he was around on certain records, but I get the impression that if you left him in a studio on his own he wouldn't be able to create a dope track by himself.

Put it like this - in the early Death Row days up until (and including) All Eyez On Me, a Daz beat was guaranteed to hit, pretty much like a Dre production. Now, if I hear an album is going to feature a Daz beat, it doesn't interest me :(

daz hasnt been makin much beats lately....he can still bring HEAT.....eg: eat a dick ricc (very doggfood soundish) and i also heard he does a track on the new twins album dat ppl say is BANGIN....dat track he did on DPGC (he only produces one song on da album, da rest is soopafly) was aiight but Eat A Dicc Ricc is da shit....i think hes leavin all his best shyt for So So Gangsta

I didn't even know daz did that beat(eat a dicc ricc), Ive been trying to get down with dpgc forum but they never hit me back with my password, they be on that bullshit overthere. I heard that j.d. is gonna produce over half of soso gangsta. which will proably make it so so commercial sounding. Like I said earlier I think daz might fuck with beats a lil sumthin, but Ive never heard shit about daz playing keys or even using a drum machine. I have heard stories about daz bangin beats on a table and str8 tracking the beat like that. I like daz i really do, but lately shits been bland to me. who did daz work with for RAW?

Mike Dean has a forum at gangstaville and posts so u could ask him.
I know he has his own company and works with his artist Sherm(Is the name right?) and he still make s songs with Tanya Herron

the death row sound was achieved by using multiple producers, and live musicians, and amazing mix/and mastering jobs...I'm sure that daz knows how to use basic shit,[mpc's,tritons, etc] or at least I hope so, but some of daz's better stuff came from co-producing with soopa, plus blaqthoven, etc.I'm waiting to see what happens, hopefully he can bring back that "true" dpg sound that we haven't really heard since RAW,I won't front though ,I liked this is the life...,and I thought dpgc was a step in the right direction, even if daz himself didn't make any of those tracks...it's I got love in the streets that was lacking...

I heard daz made raw while he was still fuckin with deathrow. I appreatiated the effort to regroup the pound on ...you know what Im throwin up. but I thought  that album was subpar in every way. and I'm a big dpg supporter. I heard there was a different version of raw going around cali before the real deal came out. is that fact or fiction. who all did he work with on raw?

I think its because Daz may not be exposed to the best equipment anymore.  So beat wise, Ima expect alot out of him on his next album seeing that he in the soso def studios.  And on a side note, I thought the life I lead album was bangin

the work he did on dillenger and gotti was the best Ive ever heard. besides doggfood

raw is the same raw,I had the first one w/no barcode, and everything is the same...and that was that "big money" sound, cause guess who paid for it.lol...daz took the masters and mixed and mastered it as well as possible.a good example of what co producers bring is listening to songs like "livin gangsta like"on dogg pound 2002[basically just a drum track and bassline]and then the finished product [with mike dean] on dillinger and young gotti,y'know, strings, layers of synth, percussion etc...not to take nothin away from daz though cause he's still my favorite west coast producer actually,but...

Daz has pretty much always been on point production-wise IMO. One of the Westcoast's best.

damn i just looked and it wasn't ours.. it was was teh ballerstatus one.

here's the part....

Quote
When you got into the industry, you worked with Deathrow Records, How did you hook up with them?

I hooked up with Dr Dre. Started fucking with the keyboards, and started making beats for them. I worked alot with Daz. Me and Daz had a good relationship. I did alot of shit with Daz. I didn't get credit for the production I did cuz I wasn't signed with Deathrow then, but I did beats for Daz and he would pay me under the table.

Back then I didn't care about getting credit, I just wanted the money. I wanted to get paid for my work.
i cant acutally find it on their site anymore, but found it on another page.

so how much of daz's row work is really soopafly?

i have my own ideas... but what about ya'll?

The first & last song on Dogg Food, plus Let's Play House sound like Soopafly production.

I think soopafly had alot to do with raw and I think barney rubble thomas  or someshit like that helpped with ...retaliation... and quik helped with the tracks daz did on all eyez and dr. dre put in work on dogg food(maybe warren g also). does that sound about right to yall.

Daz produced a hot beat for a radio drop in like 20mins or soemthing i remember reading. He just did it on the spot

I'm sure Daz asks for idea's from people & will use them. I doubt he was carried. The guy does have talent, hell even Dr. Dre said it (a former engineer who used to be in the study with Dre Daz & everyone from 1994-1996 occausionally posts at DPG forum).

So yeah I think Daz can produce, sure he has some co-producers as well, but Dre does as well, so whats the big deal.

I feel ya sixx, I love daz's beats it's just he hasn't beem consistant and the big deal is is that these "co- producers" were seldom credited. people wanna know who dropped heat on thier favorite songs! does any one know what ever happened to j flexx and sean barney rubble thomas? they were in  house producers for deathrow and dres right hand men from (93-95). thomas used to come tight on the percussion.

yeah its cool, Soopafly didnt get credit back in the day. I'm sure Dre & Soopafly & Warren G didnt get credit for helping Daz on the boards, but they guy does have the talent there

Hopefully Daz will start producing more frequently again, i'm sure even his produced shit on his new album probably had some JD help/ideas/input, but i'm sure Daz probably did the same for JD as well

shiiit, in my opinion dupri has been spending the last 10 years biting daz's style and basically the whole deathrow sound in general!!!! listen to da brats c.d.'s and especially kris krosses c.d.'s. Now he tries to bite whatevers popular. as much time as he's spent studying deathrows style I wasn't surprised when I heard he signed daz.yall remember at the beguinning of dpg's what would you do video there was a j.d. look alike and a brat look alike and  c style walks by and throws money at him !!!!

What I've heard of Kriss Kross songs (the videos they've played here) do bear a huge similarity to Death Row's sound IMO too.

alot of this thread kind of seems to shit on daz, but to give him a lil props I heard that he did the whole second side of doggystyle and dre got credit for that shit! aint that a bitch!!!!

They key is the mixing and the enginners in the studio. Dont forget that Dre mixed the entire Dogg Food Album, and Quik mixed most of ALL Eyez on Me.
Mike Dean co produced Dillinger and Youg Gotti, so there is daz's best work accounted for.

I agree the engineer has alot to do with the overall sound of any album. The best producers that can also work the boards are the bestproducers in the game (dre, quik, mike dean etc.)
