OK, so I've been a little slow on the uptake. Finally found a copy of this at the weekend - paid the best part of £20 for it, but it's all good, because...
...this is the shit. Haven't listened to much else since I got it - I just keep playing it, front to back, front to back. This is the best album out of Quik's camp in years IMO - and that includes the last two albums from Quik himself.
But the thing that strikes me most is that it sounds like the perfect follow-up to Rhythm-al-ism. It's all feel good, funky shit - no gangsta posturing, just fun music. Sounded great in the nice weather this weekend ;D
And as for Hi-C's skills behind the board: :o If Quik does retire, Crawf sounds like a worthy contender to that throne - if I heard the album without looking at the credits, I'd swear Quik did the majority.

woohoo another convert!.. i been telling ya'll!!
here's a break down of my faves...
Say Woop Feat. Suga Free <--- tight! suga free comes good too.. a bit silly on the hook though
Don't Wanna Know Feat. Nate Dogg.. tight

Let Me Know Feat. Dj Quik tight!
Hey Hey . tight!
Fo A Buck - tight!
So Good (Bonus) Feat. James Debarge.. omg this KNOCKS in the car! :)
Hit Me Where It Hurt - funny song :)
Run Up - tight too!
my boys call track 8 (pop it) "the timmy song".. if you know south park you'll get it when u hear the song!
-
Hi-Life Hustle cant fuck with Rhythm-Al-Ism IMO ! ! ! the cd is dope, no question.
but its not such good as the Quik cd...
-
Heh, must have missed them posts ;). I remember the poll versus New Testament though... personally I loved Free's album, although now that I've heard Hi-C's there's no comparison.
Oh, and 'Say Woop' gets Lord Funk's award for 'simplest but catchiest hook of the year' so far ;D
Edit: Shit, every fucker's posting at the same time! Seer - you can't hate that 'Say Woop' hook!
And I'm the biggest fan of Rhythm-al-ism. One of the greatest rap albums IMO - I wouldn't make this comparison unless I was 'so sincurr' ;)
-
yeah.. if you're in good mood that hook is fun.. but sometimes it sounds f*ckin stupid!
kinda like iv lifes "haterade"..
-
i get wat u mean but rhythmalism is in a class of its own.
if it was rhythmalism 2 it would be a step back
but like lord funk said the best to come out of quiks camp in a long time. suga free's didnt even come close to this 8)
i said this before....it sounds complete.
peace

i got slagged off when i said this album was fair superior to suga free's :'(

Nah... was about to ask - what is it?
-
haha.. that bit at the start, and throughout the song.. "give it to me".. sounds like "timmmy"... timmy is a character in southpark in a wheel chair that can only scream his own name.. in one episode he fronts a band. lol.. anyways.. it sounds just like that..

I usually agree with everything Lord Funk says, but I couldn't disagree more with this. We all got opinions. I thought this album was the shit when I first heard it, but there're too many weak songs on it. Only songs I listen to:
Let Me Know
Do It
Say Woop
Run Up, Done up
Hit Me Where It Hurts
Big Girls Need Love Too
Everything else is either average or weak IMO. :-X
-
^^
Do It is one of my favorites on there.
one of the best beats on there.
Say Woop is another nice track. cant believe u dont like em

I love the album, its been out for so many months and I still bang it. And the "new" track "Big Girls Need Love Too" is the shit, the whole thing is bangin, the album sounds complete and it really shows that Hi-C had a plan when he started recording it. But "Rhythm-al-sim" is another level, but I get what you're saying
-
Please Father forgive me, for I haven't bought this album yet! :-[

lol@ Crafty. Same here.
I think Hi-C's album is better, SugaFree's was cool, but I found myself skipping thru alot of trax, maybe bcoz there wasn't much Quik on there. Still cool though.

I agree with this Rhythm-al-ism comparison. One guy said it doesn't fuck with Rhythm-al-ism, of course thats true, but I really dont think Under The Influence fucked with it either. I like Balance and Options a lot more than most people, so I think that was a great follow up to Rhythm-al-ism, but I also think that the Hi Life Hustle is Quik quality work. The most ironic thing about it is that Quik had a lot less to do with this project than he did with The New Testament, which IMO is inferior. The Hi-Life Hustle just has this certain vibe to it, a vibe some people might not even get if they don't live in Cali. It was designed to be bumped while you are crusin down the streets on a hot summer day, and the feeling that it gives you just can't really be described. If you're an artist/producer and you can capture that feelnig in your music, you've got it made IMO.
