Title: what would you rather have?
Post by: hector on April 28, 2004, 12:40:49 PM
aight so this year (hopefully) we got debut albums from artists like techniec, crooked I, sly boogy, bo roc, 213, all these PYO albums lined up, etc.
albums from jayo felony, Nate Dogg, E-40, B-Legit, Spice 1, Bad Azz, Strong Arm Steady, Kurupt, Daz, all should be dropping an album this year.

my question is:

Would you rather the singles and or entire album be made to fit the mainstream audience?  Or would you rather the artist keep it straight westcoast (which is usually done, most of the time), and have low album sales, but a dope westcoast album.

I'd rather they keep it westcoast.

Heh, I'm not trying to be difficult, but I'd just rather it was good music.

I think the problem is a lot of people will interpret the question with "Westcoast" = dope and "Mainstream" = wack.

But I'd rather hear a hot mainstream record than a wack "straight West coast" one. If the music is done well it doesn;t matter what style it is.

Therefore I abstain from voting :P ;)

They have to keep it straight westcoast but there has to be 1 or 2 mainstream singles on each CD to help it sell more and get more coverage by the east coast style biased radio stations and consumers!

You can still go mainstream by keeping it westcoast.  The only problem is that Dre and Snoop need to lead the way and thats not whats happening right now.  But the game needs a new flavour big time, Id love to see the westcoast style and sound get big again.

It would definitely be better with a mainstream single.  This way more little kids (whose purchases basically make rap music popular nowadays) will buy the album and like what they hear.  Then the West coast style can become more popular again.

i voted for half + half (and i'm the only one so far..)

my reason... of course an album needs a "song for the radio" / pop charts

but for the coast to grow those people it attracts need to like the album as well.. so i think there needs to be a small handful of friendly tracks on there.

think about progression as well as the quick reward.

but for it to sell well it'll need atleast 2 mainstream singles. and there's no reason why a minstream single cant have a westcoast sound to it.

peace

then how come nobody on the west gets any radio or tv play?  there has been plenty of mainstream singles from the westcoast.  Roscoe had a bunch on his album.  Yukmouth, E-40, WC, Knocturnal, DJ Quik, and many more artists had mainstream type songs for singles, but with westcoast appeal, and none of them did well outside the west.

the westcoast just doesn't have a mainstream appeal, they would totally have to change their style to get a mainstream single.  For instance, have Kayne west produce the track and put jay z as a guest.  Don't give the song a laid back feel (which is imo the signature of the wc) and make the chorus really annoying.  Thats a perfect example of what a mainstream single is these days.

I cant understand why we have to change the style for it to be mainstream.
If it did involve changing id say keep it westcoast

so MTV and BET will play the videos, and so the radio stations will pump out the singles...

pretty much from day one theres been a 'Radio' song, Eazy simply had 'Radio', NWA had 'Express Yourself'.. etc etc..

does no one understand what i said? i'm still the only one that voted half n half..

why get people to buy an album they -might- not like if they picked it up just for the lead single...

u gotta give them a bit more to enjoy.. -then- they'll tell their friends 'its pretty good' instead of 'yeah its not like the single.. i didn't like the rest'

get em in and get em hooked.. u gotta reuse the formula each time to get new fans...

yes its 'selling out' to an extent.. but in todays market, whats the other answer?

u see?

Yeah, but Snoop's latest had half the album full of MTV-certified singles..
Still it barely went platinum, that's wack with Snoop & Pharells big names all over it.
