nas has had a bunch more albums, but been through a dodgy phase... whereas Ras Kass hasn't had a chance to... 7/8 platinum albums vs 2... did they even go plat?.. hmmf.. but it aint about sales..
still i'm voting for ras kass, and i'm gonna say that a lot of ya'll are sleeping on rasassination too.. ;) :P

Oh man, Iwas listening to Rasssassination this morning and thats what inspired this thread! 8) I know alot of West Coast heads that dig nas! nas in my opinion is ras kass's west coast counterpart. both have a revolutionary vision. both have stumbled with bad moves in thier career. remember strictly based on who is the most gifted lyricist. not impact or accomplishment..........
and If you havent heard rassassination do yourself a favor and cop that shit. the critics shit on that album without giving it a chance. :-\

yeah i've been saying that for a long time.. a lot of "ras kass fans" barely listen to it, but bump Soul On Ice to death.. but Rasassination is pretty damn solid!

Ras Kass is more complicated and uses a bigger vocabulary but Nas writes better songs and gets his points across more clearly. He's more versatile, he can battle ("Ether"), write consience and political inspired raps ("What Goes Around", "My Country"), storytell ("Undying Love"), make concept records ("Book Of Rhymes"), emotional/personal songs ("Dance"), and so on. He has a much better voice too.

myself, I do not really like nas all that much, some good stuff, stillmatic for example, but I don't listen to him that much..

I voted Ras Kass, for the reason that he is the most lyrically advanced, and among the smartest and gifted lyricists ever, along with Pharoahe Monch, (a few others).
He have several layers in his music, and hidden messages/meanings, and metaphors all over his tracks.
Nas is in another class imo, he's not as deep as Ras, don't have the same vocabulary, and he comes across as somewhat confused sometimes.
All the Jesus/Allah shit is also annoying, that's one of his biggest cons, from my viewpoint.
However, he's better commecially, makes catchier songs, and is probably smarter business-wise, and gets his points better across. (When he's not talking about beef or religion)
He have made more albums/music, and have worked with a bigger specter of artists.
Nas career has been far more successful than Ras, but overall I still think that Ras is better, he just haven't been able to fulfill his potential with his career.

I agree with those who say Nas is more versatile in the songs he does, and has definatly had a way more successful career....
...But personally I like Ras kass more, due to his lyricism and better flow and of course, the classic SOUL ON ICE..

ras kass hands down,
i heard stillmatic and imo, its way overrated. No doubt, Nas got skill but his songs are robot-style, it's no fun listening to him. I don't even feel the way he speaks on da beat and half the cheesy shit he spits about. I mean in all essence that guy has an identity crisis is he supposed to be a true prophet or just another hip hop self proclaimed god. does he speak da truth or does truth speak him?
ras kass' style is impetual, there is no one that can fade it...he is far beyond this generation of unmotivated mcs. for lack of better words, ras kass can bring out the god in you and if you don't beleive it just listen to Soul on Ice.

Yeah and that shit is dope but it's only one song Ras got skills but it's rare that he forms those skills into something that can really touch you in a way you can relate to. I think I've said this before, one of my favorite Ras lines is "damn, wishing we was still little kids, but we grown men now homie it is what it is" from "It Is What It Is" not because it was so complex but because I can feel that. Truly I think I'd enjoy Ras's music more if he quit with the Westside Ryder stuff and took it back to that Soul On Ice shit that's when he was at his best IMO.

When someone describes someone is like a robot you imply that his delivery is monotone, lacks emotion and is the same all the time. I just don't see how that is Nas at all, in fact that's way more Ras Kass than Nas. For example, if you just listen to God's Son you can hear that he sounds different all the time. He doesn't sound same on "Made You Look" as he does on "I Can" and he doesn't sound the same on "Dance" as he does on "Heaven".

Explain how Ras Kass brings out "the god in you", what that implies, and how does he do that on Soul On Ice.

for an example of nas " robot flow " check out book of rhymes. often nas sounds like he smoked too many blunts and went straight to the booth. ras often sounds very agitated and often a little too cocky on the mic and neither that or nas robot flow is an endearing quality. I thought that " bring the god out of you" line was a little overboard too, people need to let it go, nature of the threat was like 10 years ago. ras aint dropped nothin' like that since. I'm anxious to hear post prison ras maybe that will spark the revolutionary side of ras kass once again.

Ras is my best MC of all time and i've voted for him and Soul on ice is my best hip hop album ever.
But Nas is the closest to the GOAT status out there imo. He's dropped classics and near classic and is imo one of the most consistent rappers ever. Hate and moan about him all u want but he has only dropped one wak album out of 7 in a 10 year period (yes i am including the lost tapes as well). How many other Mcs have been as consistent as him. Who cares if Nas is confused and doesn't know if he wants to be a phrophet or what not but at least his ass never went full on commercial and never changed everything about himself musically as soon as he got success.
Jay-Z changed soon as he got success, Xzibit and countless others changed for the worst soon as they made it but Nas has remained consistent whether u like it or not.
As for Ras if he had the same opportunities as Nas imo he would have been just as consistent and dropped great material.
I choose Ras but how u all can hate on Nas is beyond me.

Nas, hands down. Nas is one of the best Hip-Hop MC's ever. Skills, Lyrics, Style, Music, Persona and Class.

the reason for the west coast "dick licking" might possibly be due to the fact that your posting on a west coast forum. and I stated at the beginning of this poll that it's to be based strictly on whos the most gifted lyricist NOT which artist has the most credibility or who's career is more prolific. I like nas but when people start acting like he's the reason why niggas rap today I get pissed. He aint that fuckin' sweet on the mic.
