When your listening to music what do you first look for in order to say a track is dope? Do you listen for the beat and the rythym or do you listen to the lyrics and the flow? I personally tend to listen for a dope track . And in my opinion If the beat is really dope It can compensate for a weak flow....I wont call out any names ;)

Production is more important. Not many MCs can overcome a wack beat to make a good song. Refer to the new Method Man album to see how even a great MC can't save the album full of terrible production.
Now production can overcome wack rhymes and MCing to make a good album, peep Group Home's DJ Premier produced Livin' Proof for proof.

for me its beats. ain't nuttin like a dope ass funky beat. wack beats will really ruin an album for me.

Beats.
It sounds shallow, like I'd love to say it's all about the rhymes. But at the end of the day what Toothpick says is absolutely right - a hot beat with wack rhymes is still listenable. The other way round and it doesn't work (one of the reasons Canibus' first album let a lot of people down I think).
-
for me the has to 55% lyrics, and 45% beat, so if has a whack ass beat, but a tight ass rythm then i will try to hook it up with somthing else, or a song with a tight ass beat but a week ass lyrics n shit, mix n match, thats why i like remixes n shit like that.
-
Beats then lyrics. The beat catches my attention first & after a few listens the lyrics start to grow on me.
But in order for me to consider a song dope overall, everything has to gel together, thas good lyrics & a good beat.

Quote from Quik: "lyrics ain't nothing if the beats ain't crackin" ;)
Still...if the lyrics suck, but the beat is tight, there's a chance I'll still like the track.
-
Lyrics all the way, if I wanted to listen to hip hop for the "beats", I'd listen to the original tracks that were sampled, which I do. The rapper or the producer don't compose the music, or even play it, so I don't care too much about it. I rate the artist for the art he creates, not the art he buys the rights to.

Well I am a producer so beats/music is a given. Thing is, some people, mainly east coast fanatics, trip so hard about lyrics, and I am like shit if lyrics are all you care about, go to a lyrics website or read a damn book! I listen to MUSIC because of what it is: MUSIC. Rhymes can be very important tho, and a track can never be but so good if the raps aren't good. With albums like Suga Free, his unorthodox style is soo hard to me, and over dope beats it is jus amazing. So as everyone else said, for an album/single to be classic or great, it has to have both, but I'd say it's beats 60% raps 40%.

I feel what you mean...but a lot of songs make old beats sound a whole lot better. If you listen to "Dr. Groove" from One Way, the group who did "Cutie Pie" the beat is kinda watery and nothin you'd really get into like that. But when you hear "I luv it" Battlecat flipped that beat to death. When they just sample a beat and repeat it it usually ain't too much better, but when they take elements from beats and re-do it in a modern way, it sounds dope as hell. "I ain't mad at ya" took the intro piano melody from an El Debarge song, and put different instruments behind it and then had a different melody durin the verses, and that was sick.
-
In I aint mad... are you talkin about the piano at the very beguining of the song or the piano melody that plays through the whole song? what is the name of the song by el debarge? I always wondered where that shit came from, thanks 8) 8)
-
For me it's the lyrics just by an inch. I just love a funky beat, but a song ain't all that if it ain't got a good flow on top of it, you know? At least that's how I feel. Of course independently I'd listen to an instrumental before an acapella performance, but that's different.

The thing is that most of those other sounds in rap songs are just sampled from other songs and all put together for the track. It's not super easy but it's also not rocket science. It will always be 1000x more difficult to originally compose a apeice of music than it would be to add a few details to it. Also when industry producers sample thet have access to the masters, which allows them to break apart the song and only take certain parts that aren't apparent when listening to the actual song. I will always put a music composer over a hip hop producer. The producer's job isn't even to compose, it is to guide the artist and the track with helpful ideas.

Nah not the intro, I always play that part too but I donno where it came from. But the melody I am talkin about is the one that plays through the hook. I think The El Debarge song was called "A Dream"

60/40 Beats/Lyrics for me. As stated above, I can get down with a good beat with bad lyrics, but its alot harder to get down with good lyrics bad beats.
-
Just take a listen at the bullshit rappers on the radio right now...that all have good beats...Ying Yang, Lil John, etc...they sell alot of records, and cant rap for shit...

he's so right.
-
i gottta go with BOTH .
because i simply can't decide on one choice. itz like the beats are the Attention-Grabber so that the listeners will play that shit, but if the lyrics aint heated, then that shit will just bore me, and i'll switch tracks. nomatter how tyte a beat is, unless i'm in a car wit some 12's or sumthin.

lyrics are important, u right. i aint a beatmaker or no shit like that, i spit...so obviously they important to me. but think about it, how many hits have good beats....and bad lyrics, and how many have good lyrics....with bad beats? its almost always the first. Like Mitch said..."Production is most important". U could drive around town in yah car bumpin nuthin but a beat, and still be bobbin yah head...still have otha people bobbin they head, but u wouldnt drive around jus listenin to some lyrics, and no beat.

lol did the topic say what is more important if you wanna sell-out? or what is more important for the superficial majority of our population?
No.
question was, what's more important to me. so screw hits. songs that are hits to me, always have great lyrics.
it's also a difference if youre just listening to a song while doing some other stuff, in that case the beat will be more important since you only get music on its surface then. but if you really get into a song, really feeling it.. to me the lyrics are significantly more important then. and I bobbed my head to a capellas already, no shit.

i aint talkin about sellin out fool. im just showin what most people are into. if i make a cd, i want people to buy the shit....u know? wouldnt u? it doesnt mean u sell out, it means u understand. Production is everything. ive heard some of tha tightest lyricist that you would have never known cus they aint even make it out the city...why, cus they production was burnt. like i said, im into my lyrics n shit...but i know if i dont find the right beat to spit over, my lyrics wont even be heard. the beat is the first thing u hear on a song, it determines whether u even listen long enough...to hear the lyrics. its coo if u into lyrics more then the beat, but yo system must sound wack when u pull up to the light...wit nuhn but lyrics and no beat lol

so we talkin about marketing right now? if you wanna get your music sold, you have to look at what the majority likes. that are the beats. yes. but as I said before my dear fool, the question, daygo, was what I like.
and to me the lyrics are way more important. I could care less if ppl buy the music I like or not. lol.. what a crazy argument that is.
