Snoop Signs With Neptunes For Next Step In Long Label Trek

If Snoop Dogg were a baseball player, he'd have a genuine dilemma on his hands trying to decide which hat to wear into the hall of fame. After launching his career with Dr. Dre and Death Row Records, Snoop has barnstormed from one home to another, crafting his own inimitable legend along the way.

Now Snoop has a new place to hang his hat for his upcoming solo album: the Neptunes' label, Star Trak. Snoop has signed a deal with the hitmaking producers' imprint, according to the team's Chad Hugo. "We're trying to bring him back to Chronic-era Snoop," Hugo said, referring to the 1992 Dr. Dre album on which Snoop made his debut.

In the recent record-business reshuffling, Star Trak left its original home, Arista, for industry powerhouse Interscope Records, which already houses artists like Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent (see "House That Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo Built To Undergo Big Overhaul").

Snoop's yet-untitled next album, which will also be released through Snoop's own Doggystyle imprint, is due by the end of the year. It will be one of the first two albums the Neptunes release through their new partnership with Interscope. The other is the major-label debut from Houston rapper Slim Thug.

Snoop left Death Row Records in 1997, at the end of a turbulent run for the label that saw the defection of co-founder Dr. Dre, the death of Tupac and the indictment of owner Suge Knight on federal racketeering charges. In 1998, Snoop latched onto Master P's No Limit Records for his next two albums. Two years later he inked directly with Priority Records, the onetime home of gangsta-rap progenitors N.W.A — the group with which Dre made his name. While on Priority, Snoop scored a hit with his most recent Neptunes collaboration, "Beautiful," which offers a softer and less contrived image for the hip-hop icon.

Confused? Here's a brief history of Snoop's tour of duty:

Era: G-Funk
Label: Death Row
Albums: Doggystyle (1993), Tha Doggfather (1996)
Snoop as: Young, gifted and laid-back. Snoop liked girls, homies and house parties.

Era: No Limit Soldier
Label: No Limit
Albums: Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), No Limit Top Dogg (1999)
Snoop as: Gangsta. Tried out the role of smooth-talkin' hustler while getting down with Master P's camp.

Era: Da Pimp
Label: Priority
Album: Tha Last Meal (2000), Paid Tha Cost to Be Da Bo$$ (2002)
Snoop as: Ballerific pimp who loved his women and his power.

I KNOW people are gonna erupt at this.

It's not really bad or good to me. He sounds best over west coast beats, and I'd rather him do work with Battlecat and Fred Wreck.

Don't know what to think. Snoop made two good songs with the 'Tunes "It Blows My Mind" and "Beautiful" <--- Good song for that type of track.

"From The Chuuuch To Tha Palace" was really lackluster though.

The Clipse album was fire on the production tip so I'm not to worried about Snoop's next album but I just hope they make beats that will suit him.

This is BIGG news for sure whether you think its good or bad.  Im glad to see Chad saying he wants to bring Snoop back to the Death Row days.  Hopefully they take some time in making and crafting some G'd up beats for Snoop on his next album.  Alota peeps been hatin on the Neptunes but Ive always enjoyed their production.  And Snoop seems to rap well over their beats.

I'm gonna say this and expect a backlash, but i would rather hear Snoop over Neptunes than Battlecat, Meech, etc.   Of course, i would rather hear Snoop over Dre and Warren beats, and maybe some Quik

If you look at the three songs he has done with the neptunes ,one was a huge hit single (which Snoop hadnt had since Bitch Please) and the other two he ripped to shreads on the m-i-c, which never happens anymore.  I think this is actually a positive move, i just hope he keeps the westcoast flavour.  It blows my mind was westcoast, so was Chuuch to Palace in a way.  If his album is full of repetitive neptunes beats beats though, i am gonna be quite pissed.

Regardless, Snoop is gonna be pushing major units, and maybe even be aggressive on the mic for an entire album.

lol@pop label...........explain to me how netpunes are only pop..........they made hits for bare cats......and who was he gon sign with on the west, only 2 chioces really........aftermath.........seems like the dre/snoop situation aint to cool yet or death row?...lol.......plus his dogstyle is westcoast and wateva label he signs to, he is still westcoast.......interscope is a global label, not east, south, west n so on.............

i wont hate if the album is heat, it'l back fire on him big time if its weak.......but like jome said before about banks album, im sure people already made their mind up about this album now........even though it aint even gotta title yet!

....actually it'l be real interestin if the album turns out to be heat and he gets hated by everyone.........

but i'll wait.......

like someone else said........i aint sure if this is a good or bad thing yet.........i'll know once his album drops

The neptunes obviously are huge fans of quality music, whether yall want to admit it or not, they're not churning out the same bullshit over and over again, they're at least half-way creative and most of their shit is quality.  They know what sounds good, and they have a better chance than most of making Snoop half of what he once was.  The only other person that could do it better, in my opinion, would be Dre himself, but Dre would never invest the time it would take to produce a tight-ass Snoop album... it'd take at least 7-8 months of production and working with Snoop to make the shit classic, maybe the Neptunes will spend that much time and we'll end up with something classy.

Snoop is really pissin' off a lot of his original base and he's more of a bitch for signin' with them after he said all those comments how W/S artists don't get no shine thanks to mainstream fags like pharrell [paraphrased].

Why can't this fool just drop all that non-sense and link up with some real life W/S producers like Bosko or Battlecat?

I dont know about this one but could be tight...Neptunes knows how to work with an artist and how to make them sound good on a beat  (Noreaga, this nigga is at his best over a neptunes beat) As for Snoop I guess it will be good for him the nigga sound too lazy over some g funk shit of course back in 94 Snoopy over some gfunk shit was off the hook but now he just sounds lazy. And Im sure that Jimmy Have something behind That (knowing that it will be a DoggyStyle/StarTrack/Interscope joint)

^^lol at the last 2 replies but both are true, there really ain't much nuetral ground when it comes to snoop on these boards

....my take is that snoop made a good move business wise he's gonna get cheap ass neptunes beats and alot of pub, personally i wish he didn't go there though

every song he has made although i only actually liked "blows my mind" he actually had a good flow on, i just hope there ain't no more beautifuls

blow my mind is a great song, I luv it.  snoop came super tight and the beat is dope as fuck.

be realistic, snoop can't drop a dope solo album anymore.  People thought Paid da cost was wack, I gaurantee his next solo is at least twice as worse.

This thing can go either way, major hit or major flop. The talk about bringing back the Chronic-era Snoop sounds really good, but we'll see how that turns out. I'm hoping for the best though. Still, at the same time I gotta wonder if the LP will be full of pop cuts like Beautiful and collabos with Britney or Justin Timberlake or some shit. The Neptunes do both good Hip-Hop tracks (Tha Liks' Best U Can, Busta Rhymes' As I Come Back, some of Jigga's tracks) and straight poppy pop pop shit.

Fredwreck, Warren G, DJ Quik, Battlecat and of course Dre would be safe choices for him. Couldn't go wrong with them. Soopafly would probably be good too. Of course there's no obstacle for having them on the LP, but since he's releasing through the Neptunes it wouldn't be a surprise if they did most of the production. I'd prefer the other dudes though.

We'll see what happens. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Don't see how anyone could help Snoop (not even Dre) bring back The Chronic Days.  That was then.. this is now.  Can't bring something that perfect back.  There were too many factors.  I'm going to take that claim as nothing but hype.  Can they do something special together?  Yea.. I'm almost sure that something big will come from them linking up.  Change is good.. lets just hope for the best but claiming Chronic day's is just stupid.

lol people must have lost their memory...every snoop cd that comes out people say it's close to doggystyle....and it's not like the neptunes are gonna be like "we're gonna try and get snoop back to "the game is to be told" era"

so enjoy the hype while it lasts, i'm just preparing myself for reality...another garbage snoop cd that i won't buy

good 4 snoop.. bad 4 him when his contract with them r up..kuz soon as its up..he will bitch in cry again like he did when he was released from,

deathrow
no limit
hell he even bitched and cried after his 2nd album on his label

every 2 albums the bitch in snoop comes out..he's a spoiled brat..if he aint havin his way..he will cry

if he wanna go back to his chronic days.. we know dre aint gone invest his attention span..its 3 west coast producers that can accomplish this..

quik, battlecat, and og warren g..let them 3 motherfuckers do it..i guarantee dre gone wanna executive produce that album

and the tunes sayin they can bring him back to those days is a "opinonated faux pas"lol

u need to do the whole album in california
he's needs kurupt in his corner
bring eazy e back from the dead

those r the 3 key things he need to go back to those days...

Ya, the more i think about it, this IS a good move for Snoop.  As much as I like Jely Roll, Battlecat, Soopafly, etc,  he almost never comes tight cuz the tracks are too laidback.  Same with Hi-tek, as much as i like Hi-tek's other work.  Te Neptunes arent my favourite producers, but they are more versatile than most people think and they DO take music seriously as a craft.  I hope they can put together a real nice album for SNoop

as for Quik, Battlecat, and Warren doing the album, i dont think so.  Quik may be one of the best ever, but his tracks with SNoop were surprisingly quite average, although i am sure Quik could cook up somteing nice.  Snoop has worked with Battlecat, and tracks like Ballin and Stacey Adams were made, which is not the SNoop most people want.  AS for Warren, i think he could add a couple dope tracks, but i doubt we will ever see that.  ANd Dre executive producing an album not on his label?  doubtful

Damn it seems like snoop is always a year late.
The Neptunes are fallin off.  correction have fallin off!!!!!
he went to No Limit after they fell off!!!  The only way I see this working is if he gets outside producers.  Since I know how to find some good out of every situation I will write this.  The Neptunes do push him while he's in the booth.  He does not sound good on Battlecat and fred wreck beats because they let him do what he wants in the booth.  the Neptunes actually produce the song and tell him "yo snoop try it like this"  battlecat, and warren g may have good beats but they dont produce snoop songs well.  the Neptunes know how to produce well.  I dont think they will let him go in the booth and drop some lazy shit.

Ohh I would also like to Welcome my self to the board.

I wonder if P Diddy is still gonna get down on this project. I remember Snoop talkin bout he wasn't gonna have guest apperances on his next album, hopefully he'll stick to it. If the Neptunes can make Snoop sound like he did on 2001 then I'll be more than happy. Fingers crossed he gets off the pimp shit.

Well, if you ask me (which i guess you didnt lol) i thought his flow was slow and boring, but the beat is incredible.  Same as Bitch Please, Snoop sucked on that one too, but the beat and a dope appearance by Xzibit made up for it.

To me, Snoop ripping it is like It Blows My Mind, Hennessey and Buddah (underrated track, shoulda been a single), and even Chuuch to Palace (despite the horrible beat and chorus)....

I think snoop came super tight on both next episode and fuck you.  bitch niggaz was nothing special at all imo.  and his hook for still dre is tight.

he ripped it blows my mind, and I agree he had a great flow on from tha church to tha palace, but the beat is way too horrible.  he also came very dope on hennessey and buddah and go away.  I also really liked him on bitch pleeze I and II.

but like I have said many times, nowadays, out of 10 songs that snoop does, 2-3 he will come tight on, and the rest will be avg or wack.  So I bet on his next album he will have about 4 good songs, 3 avg/aight songs, and the rest wack.

Dre aint got the time for Snoop , hell , I dont even think that they want to work together ! In my opinion this is the BEST move Snoop has done since he left death row , both music ( which is the most important ) and buisniss wise . As somebody said before , Neptunes takes music seriously , I will be suprised ass hell if they drop a wack ass Snoop record ! I hope they produce the whole entire thing

edit : This is Snoops sink or swim record , out of 6 solo records only two or three was dope , the rest was pure shit
