Title: car stereo help
Post by: hector on June 24, 2004, 05:52:46 PM
aight so I have been having many problems with my car stereo.  I just bought new speakers, and installed them and hooked them up to my old amp, and nothing happened.  So I thought my amp was dead.  so I bought a new amp, and hooked it up, and again nothing happened.  The power light on the amp was on tho, so I knew it was getting power.

So I pulled out my deck, and I saw that the amp remote wire was disconnected, so I plugged that back in.  agian nothing.  So I check up and down the wires to make sure they were not being cut or anything, and they were all fine.  So the amp is one where u put the wires in the screws and screw them down.  So I did some tweaking with the wires in those screws.  at one point, the speakers came on for like 5 seconds, then the stereo shut off, then on then off then on then off.  so then I turned it off, and decided that I just needed a better connection with the wires.  So I made all those connections a lot tighter and tried again.  this time, nothing.  so then I went back out to the amp and fiddled around some more with the wires, apparently I was doing this with the stereo on ( I forgot to turn off the car).  So then I came back after messing with the wires and now my deck won't even power up.  everything is wired right, and the connections are all good.

can anyone help?

Blew a fuse in the amp possibly? What AWG is the speaker wire. Check your fuses. and you should be using a 14 or 16 for the speakers. Too small and too big could fuck shit up. Check all the gains and setting to see if it is on 2 ohm or 4 ohm.

I dunno theres many things it could be.

well I just checked the fuse in the deck, and it was blown.  I replaced it, but the deck still won't power on.  Everything else you said I really don't understand, can u explain it a lil more detailed please.  thanks.

I redid all the connections on my deck and it still won't power up.  could I have permanently ruined it?  How can I check?

It is possible the amp isn't getting enough power. You should run a seperate power wire to the battery. Depending on what size the amp is , is how u determine what size wire to use. Like I said it's hard to determine a  problem over the net without seeing it.

aight, so here is the problem now:

I went to a car stereo place, and they checked the power on my stereo and amp.  both are getting power, so my deck still works.  The fuse in the power wire to my amp was blown tho.  I had no blown fuses in the car tho.  so he checked out the ground wire where my stereo ground hooks to.  that ground had been shorted out.

so I hooked up my stereo, w/o the amp remote wire or the rca's hooked up to the deck.  I took the ground wire on the stereo and by passed the adapter, and hooked it straight up to a screw.  Turn on the car, and the deck powered on.  So I thought, great, I got it working.  turned off the car, plugged in the amp remote wire, and the rca's.  turned it back on, nothing.  no power to the deck.  thought hmmm, maybe my ground wasn't connected good enuff.  redid that, and checked again.  nothing.  checked all my fuses in the dash, and they all look good.  I think my dome lights are not working now.  any ideas craiga?

hmm. That shits weird. Are u sure the fuses are fine. Alot of times when I blow fuses my dome light don't work or door chime. alot of its connected so check all the fuses. Try to get a better ground. The way I ground is I just run the grounds to the negative side of the battery. Try that. Its a very strong ground.

well all the fuses LOOK fine.  I don't have one of those meters to test them tho.  good idea about checking the door chime, I'm gonna go check that now.

aight I got no door chime either.  so obviously I have a blown fuse.  I dunno which one tho.

but now....

why did I blow a fuse when I just hooked my amp remote wire to it?  do u know why I could be blowing fuses?

something is obviosly shorting the fuses out. Something may be hooked up wrong.

well I finally got it working.  I found the dead fuse in my car, replaced that and the dead fuse in the amp power line.  plugged the deck back in, bypassed the ground from the adapter, and now it works.  didn't change any wiring, as it was right like I already knew.  Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.
