mimics the poll on Gamespot.com
In their report, titled The Definition of Insanity: Why The Next Console Cycle Will Start Off With A Whimper, the analysts present an "in-depth look at interactive entertainment software." And while many of the report's data points were revealed in May, during a Pachter-hosted E3 Conference Program luncheon, most of the data is, in fact, new.
Probably the most exotic of the report's predictions was a reference to Sony's PlayStation 2 update. The report suggests that Sony is considering adding PSX and TiVo-like functionality to the PlayStation 3. If it does, the sticker price on the unit could climb as high as $500. The report states: "We expect Sony to introduce its next console with more functionality than its current console. We base this conclusion on the introduction of the PSX, planned for late this year. The PSX will include a Digital Video Recorder (similar to TiVo) functionality; broadband Internet accessibility; wireless LAN functionality; and DVD read-write functionality. These features add approximately $500 per unit to the cost of production, resulting in an expected launch price of around $700. By late 2006, we expect the cost to include these features to decline to around $250, but speculate that the next generation console, should it include these features, could debut at $500. At this level, we believe that many consumers will be alienated

there's no way i'd drop 500 for a new system... but i do seem to remember saying that i would never drop 300 back when the 3do came out... i eventually broke down when the ps1 came out. hmmm... naw, i'm not as into games as i was back then, plus sony has a tendency to make faulty products. i think i'll wait until i see what all the hype is about and wait for the first price cut.

I feel ya! I would only drop that much on a nintendo system and even that would be a stretch, nintendo has never let me down!
-
yeah, nintendo has a good rep but i was a bit disappointed with the n64. there were some classic games for the system but they were so few and far in between. i like nintendo's "quality over quantity" policy but they can never seem to get enough 3rd party support. i personally think they should just make games and give up on making systems... it worked for sega. they were bankrupt and now they're making a grip of money and nintendo's games are 10 times better than sega's.

Nah they have the strongest franchises runnin for them; Mario Bros. they cant sell it yet, they also got Zelda, Star Fox, Metroid, and the sure to be classic Viewtiful Joe, I have confidence they will pick up in the near future especially with new ideas constantly flowing, viewtiful joe, I think they havt the power to stay

There's no way possible I would ever spend 500 bucks for a system, by anybody. I don't even spend 500 for Arcade games.
-
500 is a bit steep - most people who would want to buy a gaming system probably dont even have that kinda money to spend on a console - i.e. younger people.
-
i think i would pay 300 at most and that is really realy stretching it. but for me to do that ps3 would really have to impress me.
-
fuck 500 >:(
no1's gonna buy it so they will bring it down to a good price
(i hope )

that's actually a capcom game and i believe the sequel is going to be on the cube and the ps2.

What the fuck would u need a TiVo Digital Video Recorder for on a Game Console?
-
i think these gaming companies are just trying to find things to put into there console
and i agree with the global moderator

they're trying to make something that a non-video game player would be interested in. it's been tried before with that cd-i piece of crap but i guess sony figures that they can make it better. i think it would be kind of nice to have just one machine that did everything sitting next to my tv rather than 3 or 4. the bad thing is, if one of those components fail then you have to take them all to the shop. the major problem is that for us video game fans who want the console just for it's video game capabilities... we have to shell out the extra bucks for stuff we don't even want.

exactly, that's why i'll always get a nintendo machine....they don't throw in expensive extras, they're made strictly for games (would like to see more online play though)

$500?? FUCK NO!!! Don't matter if it's for PS3, Xbox Next, or the next Nintendo...$500 is far too much. The most I would ever spend is MAYBE $300...and thats a big maybe.
Shit man, just wait a year or so after the console launches, it'll be down at least $50 by then, lol.
-
Besides, you know you're not going to see the best games a console has to offer at the launch. If Xbox 2 or PS3 (if PS3 is a good console and grabs my attention, I'll prolly get it) costs, say...$350 at launch. I'll wait a year, wait for the prices to drop b/c of competition, then buy both of em.

I heard its been officially licensed to Nintendo and capcom is taking it to PS2, its gonan do way more for GCN than it will to PS2

i usually pre order consoles so i'm used to paying $300 or more for launch (got an xbox bundle when i was out to sea that was $400+ and it took me over a year before i got to play it) but $600 for some features i already have and won't use is a real bitch
-
I'd take the 8-bit OG Nintendo over that $500 piece of shit any day.
-
Shit f I do it better come with a ton of games and a butler to serve me some beers while I'm playin'
-

It didn't even come out yet, and you're already calling it a piece of shit... ::)
-
they should re-release the 8-bit nintendo for like $300 with like the top 100 classic games and also including the duck hunt gun, the power pad for track and field, and a game genie, that'd be worth paying for, peace.

you do realize you can download all of those 8 bit games on your pc for free, right? you might have a little trouble with games like duck hunt due to the controller though.

LoL.
I voted "maybe".
But not if it's only a improved PS2.
If they manage to get PC-graphics on it, have a big hdd (160GB+) for recording TV-shows, DVD, MP3 & CD playback, internet possibilites with keyboard, min. 2 controllers, lots of internal memory, USB/FireWire connect to transfer TV-shows to PC, online gaming, then I might cop it.
Not very likely then.

more than 500 quid worth of kit i reckon... :P

I will not pay $500 for a system, but if my girfriend or one of my parents or friends wanted to buy it for me I wouldn't argue.
