Well...I propose this question after listenin to all of his different songs, and playin them for people.
This is what I am starting to notice...he is still my favorite west coast rapper right now, and he drops incredible verses and freestyles. However...I am noticing that he hasn't been that great in just creating songs, from how I see it. I have heard a lot of different songs, and though some are still good, most of them just don't seem to be as good as I think they should be for him bein so dope. For one, his hooks are usually always average, sometimes less or more. Also, it seems like he doesn't have good taste in beats. I heard the single on his website, and it is decent, but just nothin that I would play for people like "this is the best dude on the west"
I think he can definitely make a classic album, but I think it will take him working with somebody who knows how to make a classic, and not just somethin that would happen by coincidence. With Dre or somebody at his level, they will say "no...I don't like this hook, get a new one, or either I will get somebody to do one." Also, it will take a producer that makes good enough beats for his lyrics, that keep a balance. I think he could actually rock club tracks like Tipsy, Grindin, In the club, and more, but he just never sounds good on happy beats in my opinion.
So overall...I think he CAN make a classic album, and I hope to God he does, but I'd say it all depends on the circumstances.

i agree he usually blows away the beat with his rhymes.....maybe that's what he likes...to be able to outshine the music...to me that's the only thing keeping crooked i from being in the top 3 of my favorites

I voted 4 I really don't know enuff to say. I'm also not really feeling him, but I don't think that he's over-rated. :-\
-
Yeah, I do think he can make a classic album: if he gets the right producers behind him (Dr. Dre as the main man).
Let's see...
- his lyrics are tight, there's no discussing that.
- he signed a distribution deal with Universal, so he has a major label backing him, which is also an advantage.
- now the only thing he needs to do I think, is get some top-notch producers (not necessarily producers who already made a name for themselves...some new talent is always welcome, but it really has to be "mind-blowing" then) behind him, and a good executive producer who knows what it takes to make an album that people will never forget.
I agree, hooks/choruses are also very important, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to let someone else write the hooks for Crooked.
-
I think he could do it. He got the lyrics and the flow on lock, so if he just drops his A-level material, there's no weak links on the rhyme side of things.
Comes down to the production I guess. I think that if he finds one or two guys that both make dope beats AND suit his style, it ain't gonna be a problem. But I think it'll definately have to be so that there's only 1 or 2, maybe 3 producers on the whole album. What today's rap albums lack is consistency in the production sound. All of Quiks, Warren G's, Dr. Dres and N.W.A.'s albums and Snoops first album got that consistent production, they sound whole like that, you know? They clearly sound like an album, not just a collection of tracks.

Maybe not a classic but a dope record definetly.
His lyrical skill is godly but only if he could just get someone like Quik to blaze his album with some hot beats

Well said. Some rappers work with too many producers and they album sounds distorted. I mean id rather hear a Crooked album just laced by Quik rather then a neptune produced track here an R kelly one there...

he can, but he wont.

about the major backing him up,that was some stupid shit
hiw the fuck having a deal with a major can help u doing a classic?
more like a obstacle if they tell him with what rappers to work and what he has to say

I see where you're coming from, but what I was trying to say was...if a major distributes your album, people from all over the world will be able to get it. Example: if you're a huge West Coast fan, you'll have no problem finding Doggystyle in stores (no matter where you live), but if that same person also wants to buy Real Brothas, (which in a way, is also a classic) he won't find it, because of the fact it wasn't a major release.
You got a point though...some majors do dictate their artists, but hey, let's try to stick to the topic for once.

First he needs a Street Anthem like Nutthin but A G tang or Still Dre Cali Love
Or Jin N Juices or Streetz Iz a Mutha Space Boogie a New York New York song Bren Got's a baby........................pS
-
I don't think he's gonna make a classic the first time around, but, with the right people behind him, I think he can make a classic one day.
-
I like how the Crooked I groupies on his site, just off of snippets, were claiming that "Say Hi 2 The Bad Guy" was a classic album and up there with albums like AEOM and Doggystyle.
-
How Comen the shit never came out not even the Daz Version of "Say Hi 2 The Bad Guy" it was double cd and nothing...
-
Of course, hes the best in the west!
-
If the production is right and guests are kept to a minimal, then I think so. He's got the lyrics and flow, he just needs good beats.
-
Probably not, but there's a small chance..
I can easily see how his album will be riddled with unknown/uninteresting guests, and crossover attempts.
He also need a certain type of beats, his flow doesn't fit every kind of beat.
But if mixed with the right people, then maybe..
-
I seriously think Crooked would rock better over east coast style production. Pete Rock, Large Professor, Premier, shit would be fucking dope. He can be an awsome lyriccist at times and these beats would suit that.
-
Crooked I's album "Momas Boy" wont be released anytime soon. . . this fall at the earliest unfortunatly.
As I said, hes heading down south to record with the Sucka Free camp and Lil Flip.

Exactly. A great album is so much more then just one person. Alot of it is timing. Its so rare that a group of people can get together and actually get along well enough to crank out something "great." That applies to pretty much anything.. not just music. Theres no real formula to greatness because alot of it has to do with the sign of the times. Timing is so important. The Chronic wouldnt have been great based on the music alone. It was great because the music fit with the times.. it fit with the peoples thoughts.. basically it was dropped at the perfect time. Success is a combination of two things. preparation and opportunity. Kinda like what Quik said. "If you stay ready.. then you aint gots to get ready.." (or maybe that was Suga Free.) No one can predict that kinda shit.. just gotta stay ready to take advantage of opportunities when they come up.

I disagree with that. IMO Crook is one of the best at riding any type of beat.
