faster processor and more RAM

More RAM or faster processor both works..
Avoid having programs running in the background like RealPlayer, Winamp Agent, Quicktime garbage, Nero, Kazaa, Soulseek etc.
Type "Msconfig" in "Run" on the start menu.
Then look under the card on the far right called "Startup" or something similar.
Uncheck all programs you don't need in the list, like the programs mentioned above, it won't delete these programs but will avoid them from running in the background.
The less programs running, the faster the computer become..
And do not have much stuff on the desktop, that also steals memory.

your best bet to speed up xp (without upgrading any parts)
is to format your hard drive>reinstall windows
You can buy programs that say they speed up windows, but they only improve windows a little bit, format.
if you wanna upgrade your pc, processor and ram. but your best bet if you wanna upgrade your pc is to just buy a cheap dell.
