LOS ANGELES -- Some ice cream truck vendors in the Pico-Union area of Los Angeles are selling more than ice cream.
Our undercover investigation found that 50 percent of ice cream trucks in the area were selling fireworks.
NBC4 News was offered several different types of fireworks for sale including those that are not legal anywhere in the state.
One vendor even told NBC4 that he'd run out of fireworks for the day, but he's in the same spot every day at 5 p.m., so to come back tomorrow.
Although word of the sale surprised some adults, teenagers were better informed. Some told NBC4 that it's easy to buy illegal fireworks on the streets of Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Police Department said they don't have the resources to monitor ice cream trucks, so they rely on the public for tips.
It was just such a tip that led them to a Chinatown building where they discovered 30 tons of fireworks waiting to hit the streets.
