Title: Is Westcoast Hip Hop somewhat watered down compared to NY?
Post by: Que (signing off) on July 05, 2004, 02:06:29 AM
Ok watered down is a word used for the likes of Puff Daddy, Nelly and your homo-sexual acts. But I have to say the majority of Westcoast albums I hear now, contains WACK HOOKS, awful beats and mediocre story-lines.

I just sorted out my CD's and had so many independant Bay Area releases, all with the same kind of "repetative hooks" and very amature production, Im sure 70% of these kind of CD's are made from Home using a Compaq PC Microphone.

Its like, "lets put out a CD to make a quick dime".

This is why Snoop Dogg is still the #1 westcoast artist, because he never puts out amature shit. Same goes for Dr Dre , Xzibit, Nate Dogg etc.

so its about quality control...

seems like the west coast has a bigger indie scene, the bay is all about that hustle.. they just pump out lots of product to get all they can from their fan base. how many albums does someone like JT put out?

but have you also noticed that some west coast acts who blow up big dont scream wesssssssssyyyyyyydeeeeeeeee seem to do quite well if they distance themselves from stereotypical west coast topics..

e.g. Jursassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Black Eyed Peas, Self Scientific, People Under The Stairs..

Yeah I noticed that rappers that rep the West a lot usually don't blow up.

Speaking of BEP, I saw them live in concert the other day, and they didn't even mention the West once...I was kinda disappointed by that actually.

Very true, "Quality control" is a good word. Thats spot on aswell with the statement of Westcoast artists not following suit with lyrics and sound. When Black Eyed Peas added that scrawny girl to do vocals they took it to the next level. I always thought Defari has kept a solid sound throughout.

I think I mainly refer to 80% Bay Area Rap, they have wack hooks and corny punch-lines. Almost everyone out in the bay has a CD in moms and pops, even uncle bob and cousin benny.
