I've always wonderd why this album didnt perform to expectation..i mean, it has Nas and his crew etc, Dr. Dre produced...what a combo!, i have a couple tracks from this album...The Message, Phone Tap, Executive Decision, Desperado's, ALL great tracks, i mean, i was addicted to these for ages...
I really like this Eastcoast album produced by Dr. DRE, but DRE himself is these days speaking of a flop. Even though some hot MCs such as Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, Canibus, Noreaga and Nature participated at the Firm, almost nobody wanted to buy this album.
What happend to this album...it went along unknown...and in the song "Forgot about Dre", he talks about "All them niggas than said that i turned pop, or the firm flopped"
Why?
Anyone like this album...anyone have any reasons? I googled it..all came up with lyrics...
-
dre wasnt hot at this time
the whole image of nas and them releasing a more gangsta oriented group album didnt work
-
But the whole album in itself wasnt bad. I mean...its so unoticed its just...mind boggling...the music itself was good...
-
yeah i know..i love phone tap and all the other tracks you mentioned
but thats just how the music industry and the fans are.........
-
Uh, they released Firm Biz as a single....which wasnt a great song at all. And they didnt have any other signle material type songs; Dre's beats were dope but not guaranteed hits like he had been accustomed to. As for THE MESSAGE, that wasnt even on the album, it was on Nas' It Was wriiten.
i liked the album, but it wasnt great at all, it flopped b/c people had great expectations and the album was merely average
-
flopped cos cormega got replaced by nature. and fans had such high expectations for this album, since it was Dre and Nas, like the first time west coast collaborated with east coast since all the bicoastal rivalry. and i dunno i guess people expected hella good songs, but most of the songs lacked content and subject matter, mainly focusing on sex, money and shit.
-
true..sex money and shit...but same as most gangsta rap?
-
yeha i guess most fans were expecting like storytelling like mafioso type shit..like raekwon style or some shit..but the album failed to go to that extent..
-
I don't know why it flopped, it just didn't seem too exciting. I slept on it, and by reading these posts, I'm gonna check it out now. When it came out, it looked mediocre, and I wasn't buying the whole "super group" thing when I hadn't even heard of Nature before.
-
it was rushed.. dre got 3 days with them guys in the studio
-
ooo..okies..still think its not a bad album.. a lot worse out there that are gettin props i think...
-
::Mr. Hahn:: i also thought this album was pretty good but alot of people i know never heard of it either ?!? i still bump this album from time to time...
Cheers

I didnt think it woz bad at all i still listen to it now i think it failed cus dre woznt poular at that time and nas woz jus gettin famous 8)
-
maybe...i was just wondering...wasnt Dre Famous already by then..wouldnt word spread on how good this album was..its just...so....unnoticed i thought its kinda crazy..
-
yup of course he was.. thing is dre only did a couple tracks, i believe trackmasters did more!
-
Are they any good? Trackmasters did the J-Kwon Tipsy song right?
-

that was TrackBoyz
-
Trackmasters have done some of the greatest ever tracks, they are one of the best.
The album sold good units, but reviews wernt hype. I wouldnt say it flopped. But it wasnt as good as was expected. Same with the 1st Aftermath Compilation.
-
Listen to the lyrics of "Forgot About Dre" one more time man, he doesn't say he thought the album flopped, but the fans claimed that.
All you niggas that said that I turned pop, or The Firm flopped
Y'all are the reason that Dre ain't been gettin' no sleep.
I like the album, but it was definitely under people's expectations. "Desperados" is a classic track though. Canibus ripped that shit:
At a thousand degree Celsius I make MC's melt
Fuck my record label, I appear courtesy of myself 8)
-
iT DIDNT fLOP
MILLION SOLD!!!!
-
Phone Tap And Firm Biz Were Good Tracks.I Don`t Understand Why Did It Flop,I Think It Didn`t Flop
-
so i guess we can all agree that it wasnt a flop? It was a good album, but it didnt perform to expectations?
-
Not performing to expectations is what a flop is. Yes, it was a good album but it flopped.
-
well with that lineup they was expection double platinum status right away..when it only barely made it to 1 million thats why it was called a flop...and it didnt get good reviews either...
Peace

i just got this album in the mail ordered it off ebay with 20 other cds gonna check it out in the car today didnt know dre produced some tracks on it
-
Nature should of been replaced by Cormega.
It was an alright album with some good songs i dont know what everyone was moaning about.
If Dre had just produced a whole Nas album instead 8)
-
Y'all talking like it is a classic of something. The album is like 4 dope songs and the rest is garbage. And Dre did not get involved that much.
And some of y'all should know by now that a good album does not guarantee good sales. Sadly.
-
...Y'all talking like it is a classic of something [...] Sadly...
LoL? You drunk? Nobody said it's even close to classic, everybody said it was a good album under everyone's expectations. Sadly.
-
I believe it is a classic mayb they should re-release it with the first single bein phone tap agen that is a wicked tune
-
Desperado was also a great track

I doubt anyone would have any interest in this album at this point if it were re-released
