Title: BASKET: ITALY-USA 95-78
Post by: Smoke on August 03, 2004, 01:46:23 PM
In Germany, Italy defeated USA 95-78.

Quote
COLOGNE, Germany -- The U.S. men's Olympic team did more than merely lose. It was embarrassed and exposed like never before in international competition.

Losing an exhibition game for the first time when using NBA players, the Americans were completely outclassed by lightly regarded Italy, never even making it close in the fourth quarter of a 95-78 upset Tuesday.

"This is a wakeup call for us," Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson said. "I think we need something like this to understand it's not going to be easy."

SportsNation: Still Believe?

On July 27, SportsNation was firmly behind the U.S. team with 78.2 percent believing the team would win the gold medal in Athens.
After the 17-point loss to Italy, that number is down to 52 percent. The percentage of those who feel the U.S. team will not medal has gone up from 6 percent to 24 percent.

The Americans were sloppy with the ball and couldn't handle Italy's zone defenses and 3-point shooting. Italy not only made 15 from behind the arc but showed superior ball movement and poise in handing the Americans their most lopsided defeat since pros began competing in 1992.

"They're going to be in for a lot of lessons for the next few weeks," U.S. coach Larry Brown said. "It's a young team, and it's a different game internationally."

Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony led the Americans with 17 points, and two-time NBA MVP Tim Duncan added 15.

Italy, whose roster is filled entirely by players from that country's league, was led by Giacomo Galanda's 28 points and Gianluca Basile's 25.

While the Italians were fifth at the Sydney Olympics, the United States is unbeaten at the Summer Games and in Olympic qualifying since NBA players were allowed in 1992, taking four straight gold medals. It will seek a fifth in a row at the Aug. 13-29 Athens Olympics.

But the United States is sending its youngest team to the Olympics -- the average age is 23½ -- since the door opened for NBA players.

At the 2002 World Championships, an American team with NBA players was beaten for the first time, 87-80 by Argentina. The United States went on to lose twice more in that tournament and finished sixth.

In an effort to avoid a similar display, the current U.S. squad is touring Europe before heading to Greece. On Wednesday, it will face a Dirk Nowitzki-led Germany, which beat Italy 85-77 Sunday.

On Tuesday, Iverson's jump shot trimmed Italy's lead to 56-52 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. But the Americans never got closer. On Italy's next two trips down the floor, Basile made 3-pointers that stretched the underdogs' lead to 62-52.

Iverson winced when Massimo Bulleri made a 3-pointer despite falling down and having the past NBA scoring champion's hand in his face late in the third quarter.

The Americans had all sorts of problems on defense and offense, getting called for three shot-clock violations and several traveling calls in front of 14,831 spectators.

The Italians were 15-of-35 from behind the line, while Americans went just 4-for-13, justifying Brown's fears that his team might be short on pure shooters.

YOU AINT SHIT. Out.

Ok, maybe that's not the best team in the NBA

Carmelo Anthony  Denver Nuggets 20 A
Carlos Boozer  Utah Jazz  22 A/C
Tim Duncan  San Antonio Spurs 28 A/C
Allen Iverson  Philadelphia 76ers 29 G
LeBron James  Cleveland Cavaliers 19 G
Richard Jefferson  New Jersey Nets 24 A
Stephon Marbury  New York Knicks 27 G
Shawn Marion  Phoenix Suns 26 A
Lamar Odom  Los Angeles Lakers 24 A
Emeka Okafor  Charlotte Bobcats 21 A/C
Amare Stoudemire  Phoenix Suns 22 A
Dwyane Wade  Miami Heat 22 G

But how many players do you know from this roster?

Gianluca Basile Fortitudo Bo 29 G
Massimo Bulleri Treviso 26 G
Roberto Chiacig Siena 29 C
Giacomo Galanda Siena 29 A
Luca Garri Roma 22 A-C
Denis Marconato Treviso 29 C
Michele Mian Udine 31 G
Gianmarco Pozzecco Fortitudo Bo 31 G
Nikola Radulovic Valladolid 31 A
Alex Righetti Roma 26 A
Rodolfo Rombaldoni Jesi 27 G
Matteo Soragna Treviso 28 G

Please! Dont make lame excuses, +17 points win, with the second team playing the last quarter.

And yes, Italy is playing in the Olimpics. Like Argentina, like Lithuania, etc..

italy has been together how long now as a team? it usually takes a while for a team to develop chemistry ( making key plays during crucial moments, rotating on D etc..) looking at this roster i dont see any consistent shooters but alot of scorers who need to get into a rythem for them to be successfull, hasnt happened yet but its the only 2nd exhibition gamel. with all these athletes on this team they have to become a better lockdown defensive team and get easy buckets that way since they're lacking any deadly shooters...

just look at the lakers they were suppose to win it all last year but never developed the chemistry they had during the 3 peat years. only time will tell if this team will turn it around..

it's all good. other countries are finally catching on to basketball, and when Jordan was popular, the game reached all over the globe, and now in other countries they play b-ball. It's a an upset when we win in baseball now against a Latin American country, and soon it'll be an upset if we can beat a European, or maybe even African teams in basketball unless we get our pros. It happens, it's all good. This shows that the game is popular all over the world, unlike American football which no one outside of the U.S. knows, nor cares how to play.

Also, just because the first pro basketball game was played in Canada, Toronto in fact, does not make it a Canadian game. It was invented in the United States at YMCAs, and later Canadians took to basketball to have a sport that can be played in areas on nights when hockey was not played. The sport then took off in ghettos, first being played by Jews who dominated the game, and later by blacks who took over the ghettos. It basically became the poor mans game.

america has the best basketball players.

Was it supposed to be funny? America DOESNT have a good team to represent them.

Im not making excuses.  the College All American team should win a game vs Italy.  Too much damn indivual play is fucking up basketball.  The A, B, C team of the NBA should easily win every game.  No excuses from me.

This post is totally nonsense. What the fuck do you mean? LOL. The College All American team SHOULD win a game vs Italy? Why? Just cause they are Americans? That's one of the dubest post ever, man. Very ignorant. And you know what? That's exactly the reason why you've lost by 17 points against us, and you have lost 3 games in the last World Championships Tournament, arriving 6th. Your team is a team made by humans, not UFO's. Like Italy. Italy embarassed Duncan, Iverson, Marbury, Lebron, Carmelo, Wade, etc. Stop here, please.

italy has been together how long now as a team? it usually takes a while for a team to develop chemistry ( making key plays during crucial moments, rotating on D etc..) looking at this roster i dont see any consistent shooters but alot of scorers who need to get into a rythem for them to be successfull, hasnt happened yet but its the only 2nd exhibition gamel. with all these athletes on this team they have to become a better lockdown defensive team and get easy buckets that way since they're lacking any deadly shooters...

Italy has 6 different players from the ones who shocked everybody in the last European Championships. So yes, it's a "NEW" team too. Just 2 years average older than USA. 2/3 of the roster was at their debut on international games.

The USA team sucks...Honestly, half those guys have never even been all-stars.

At least 3 of them are perennial All Stars. Plus Wade, Anthony, James are supposed to be "the future" of the NBA.

What's next? I'm having fun, lol.

About Grant-Divac, I wrote they arent that worse than Wallace (combined). And i explained why. You can agree or disagree, that's another point. But i gave you a full explanation of what i mean with that statament. So go check it and read it again. Wallace played in Italy, i know him more than you. And i've seen Divac playing basketball from 14 years or more. I've seen them both playing against Europeans, against people who KNOWS how to play basketball (and not only how to jump or how to dunk with nobody defending zone). So shut the fuck up. Talking about dumb statement, then.. lol. Basketball IS a team game. Individuals are ruining it IN THE STATES. In the rest of the world (maybe they are more intelligent?) they put the team first, then themselves. And they are improving, while USA is falling down so much you are inventing some of the most pathetic excuses i've ever read, in this forum. Lithuania and France outplayed USA in the last Olympic Games. Lithuania missed the last shot to win the game. It was a shock. But hell no, you Americans are so ignorant you never thought you need the first/best team and you need them to pratice togheter. No. Our 2nd team is enought! Yea, right. You've lost 3 times in the last World Championships, and you arrived 6th. Now again: youngs will be more motivated than old players. Duncan and Iverson are enought to win it all, plus Melo and James, and Wade.. Nobody can defeat them. Mmmm.. Nobody but Italy (by 17). And Germany is waiting to possibly beat you. Man what the fuck are you talking about here? The "Dream Team" is dead. Jordan retired, man. Johnson and Bird retired. John Stock retired. Barkley retired. Read ESPN.com, you are co-favorites in Athens? YES, CO. Like ESPN.com said.. "MAMMA MIA!"

Please do me a favor and go commenting baseball.

Man you are making it looks like it's impossible in the States to play like a team. It IS possible. But your players think they are too big to do that. They think they can win alone, 1 on 1, against everybody. Shit we play basketball, in Europe, not playground! We defend on zone, not 1 on 1. We shoot better than you, not worse. We run, we dont sleep. If you dont step up and you dont play as a team, then probably you ARE NOT A TEAM. And it's all something about the attitude, the mentality. Your is worse. Dont tell me Duncan, Iverson etc cant play like a team. Cause if they cant, then blame nobody but yourself and your attitude. About ESNP.com writers, they are the only ones who called USA team "co-favorites", and who somehow are talking shit about USA team since day 1, saying it's hard to win the gold medal. But you know, USA players are STILL acting like they are Jordan, Magic and Bird!

We're saying the same thing, but the excuse is that you think College players can do it and those NBA superstars cant. They can. They just has to cut this "i'm superman" attitude from themselves, cause they are def better than Italy. They have the best coach possible coaching them, a good vice-coach, they are all youngs, so.. what the fuck they need to play as a team? They got everything, man.

Did I say co-favorites?

Judging by Team USA's first exhibition game overseas, that might have been a charitable assessment.

Friday's suggestion in this cyberspace that the Yanks are one of the three best bets for a gold medal in Athens only applies if the 12 players who finally did accept invitations from USA Basketball heed the preachings of Larry Brown and Gregg Popovich. Larry and Pop have been telling these guys for days that the only way they're going to win any kind of medal is with defense. The suffocating team variety.

The most distressing aspect about Tuesday's 95-78 embarrassment is the ease with which the Italians carved up Team USA. Inside and outside, it was just too easy for them.

Now granted, building a world-class team defense doesn't happen in a week, and that's basically as long as this group has been together. So, in fairness, you have to give Brown a little bit more time to get Team USA playing something that resembles a system.

You also have to concede that the Italians, playing loosely against a former superpower that lost its ability to intimidate in Indianapolis, didn't stop hitting once they got hot.

However ...

With its collective athleticism, Team USA shouldn't be overrun by a second-tier team like Italy, on the road or wherever. Never.

Not when Italy had just lost to Germany, which has Dirk Nowitzki -- playing competitively for the first time since April -- and little else you'd recognize.

The Americans have to be honest with themselves and admit that they didn't take the Italians seriously. That's the only conclusion you can draw when, according to witnesses at Cologne Arena, some of Brown's players were hoisting halfcourt shots and looking, uh, less than intense in pregame warm-ups. Then they found themselves in a hole and, as Allen Iverson noted, didn't communicate well enough on defense to mount the necessary comeback.

As one GM told me before the Italy game: "I have serious concerns about that team. No shooting, no passing, no leadership, no international experience, no knowledge of what's at stake and I don't think any respect for the opponents they're going to be facing."

Other than that ...

Right. Defense is the only way Team USA is going to be able to control tempo and get easy baskets. Only by forcing turnovers and rushing the opposition into bad shots -- and rotating religiously to ruffle open shooters -- will Brown's lads be able to offset the reality that there isn't a single Yank you'd expect to make seven 3-pointers in a game like Italy's Gianluca Basile did.

I will continue to say that it was a major mistake leaving Milwaukee's Michael Redd off this squad, which Tuesday's setback helped prove. Team USA combined for only four 3-pointers in this 16-point humbling.

The good news?

This edition of Team USA doesn't have a lot of things, but it does possess just about the two best coaches in the league. Coaches from the top two defensive teams in the league.

With about 10 days left until the Olympics start, at least there's still a little time for some Pistons-Spurs mojo to rub off.

Marc Stein, ESPN.com.

Anyway, to close this topic, the problem of NBA is that you continue to have ex-players with no experience as first coach. Shit man, there are at least 30 European coaches who are better than you better coach. They actually coach the team, like the NCAA coaches. You should try one.

kinda sad game for usa, even with that team they should beat italy with one hand. i still have faith for usa, and i think they'll still win gold at athens.

No joke, with this win against USA i think we showed the world we deserved the bronze in the last European Championships. We are a team with young talents, with good shooters, great defence (best defence in Europe), no NBA talents, but a BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG heart.
