Title: The Return Of Canibus
Post by: Adam Donnelly on October 16, 2004, 06:28:35 AM
The return of Canibus
Words: Warsaw Johnson

Unexpectedly the internet and the streets have been buzzing this past month over four new tracks from lyrical beast Canibus. The self proclaimed "Illest Emcee Alive" has resurfaced on three diffrent Kay Slay mixtapes all released one after another. On top of that a track entitled "I Wish you Would" featuring Royce da 5'9 and Chino XL (Can you say unfuckwitable?) has been let loose like a plauge on the internet by King Tech of the wakeup show. So does this mean that Canibus is back to reclaim his Hip Hop title? Or is he simply just promoting himself to the new generation of Hip Hop lovers who were not around when he first set the mixtape game a blaze back in 1997? As of right now, no one knows. What we do know is that Canibus has not lost a step! In fact he has gained another foothold on the art of Emceeing.

First track "Victory" from Kay SLAY's certified troublemakers 5 features Canibus alongside Shaq over Biggies track Victory. Besides showing the world that Canibus and Shaq don't have beef, Shaq makes it clear that Canibus has a new game plan by stating "This aint about battling, this aint about beef no more we stickin to the music" From a recent interview conducted on KMEL's Wake up show, this seems to echo the same statements Canibus made about fuseing relationships and just making lasting music. Don't get it twisted though, Canibus spits flames over this track with such lines as "yall *****z is weak/ I got real power/ yall rap for minutes, I rap for hours" and "I wish this was a battle/ I'd grab the mic and do curls/ and destroy you in front of the world" This song was a victory indeed, even Shaq came with the heat with "never gotta spit, I make more than mike/ anyone Jordan, Jackson, Tyson, Action..." Anyone who was'nt feeling this track did'nt have to wait long for Canibus to switch styles and give them something else.

Long before 50 Cent was named the king of mixtapes Canibus was trading verses with Emcees from all around. He returns to that with a freestyle with up and coming Emcee Papoose over TALIB KWELI's "Guerrilla Monsoon" track. Featured on Kay Slay and Alchemist "The Mixmaster" mixtape, this track is a certifed banger! Papoose holds his own with verses like "the mafia be thinking blacks too soft/ that's why I'm quick to catch em eatin spaghetti/ make em bleed ragui sauce..." Since the release of this track Papoose has dropped another mixtape which is getting a huge respone. Canibus lets everyone know that he's back wheter they like it or not when he said "you can't hold me back with blackball number eight". The only complaint I had with this track is that Canibus and Papoose did'nt appear to be on the same page lyrics wise. Regardless though, this track reveals previous Canibus guest appearences such as "Enemy of the state" with Tragedy Khadfi". Just two Emcces coming off strong with lyrics.

Speaking of lyrics, the third release has a solo Canibus freestyling over this past summers anthem "Lean back". This track has probably gotten the biggest response from fans and haters alike probably due to it's laid back feel. It also displays another style of rhyming from the Canibus man if you can believe that. Witty rhymes with a head nodding beat makes this track one of the best. Featured on DJ KAY SLAY's "LONG LIVE THE KING" mixtape, Canibus gives us a real treat. For any heads out there who thought Canibus was soft he answers with "U.S. military trained, remember one thing / I remember was no other soldier like me / My M-4 Carbine bang nightly" In other words, Canibus is a REAL soldier on and off of the mic.

Last but not least is the fourth release entitled "I Wish you Would" that showcases Royce da 5'9 and Chino xl. These three under rated Emcees fufill a dream for many by just rocking a track together. The chemistry amongst them is perfect and I hope they do get togeher again soon in the future.

As I type this more Canibus news is unfolding. Four new freestyles are now up on Canibus' website, http://micclub.net so make sure you go and check that out. To find out more about Canibus visit http://canibus.us and http://canibusworld.com

So is Canibus back? I'll let you decide!

Mic Club is pretty ass.
Rip The Jacker is good if you look at it song by song, but as an album as a whole, it's weak.  I try to listen to it front to back and I'm bored by track 6.
