Title: Dr. Dre To Produce Next Ice Cube Record
Post by: Myrealname on September 19, 2002, 02:48:17 AM
"Two of the biggest masterminds in West Coast hip-hop are together again," Ice Cube said with a rare smile Tuesday on the Los Angeles set of his latest film, "Torque." "I think that's something exciting."

As if Cube didn't have enough to be excited about with his movie "Barbershop" opening at #1 (see "Ice Cube's 'Barbershop' A Cut Above The Rest At Box Office"), the stone cold MC has once again aligned himself with Dr. Dre and is in the process of becoming an official member of the Doc's Aftermath label.

Cube and Dre rose to notoriety in the groundbreaking gangsta-rap group N.W.A, first appearing together on 1988's classic Straight Outta Compton. When Cube left the outfit in 1989, the two engaged in a war of words on wax only to squash their differences years later. Over the past few years, Cube and Dre have worked together on an occasional cut such as "Natural Born Killaz," "Hello" and "Chin Check," and also toured together as part of the 2000 Up in Smoke tour.

"[Me signing to Aftermath] was something that was kind of in the back in our minds for a while as far as Ice Cube's camp," Cube said. "We kind of felt around and saw if Dre would be interested in something like that. He was all the way with it. Once he was all the way with it, we just started working on putting the deal in place. We're in the process of making it work. Hopefully next year you'll see an album by Cube produced by Dr. Dre. For me it's exciting because my next album could be the best album I ever released. To me that's something that turned me on to where I just want to get on the mic."

In November, while promoting his film "All About the Benjamins" and about a month before releasing his greatest-hits album, Cube told MTV News that 15 years of the music grind was taking its toll on him and that he was leaning more toward Hollywood as a creative outlet.

"Not really burnt out on making music, it's just the routine of doing it year after year after year," he clarified. "What works out for me now at this point in my career is to take breaks in between the records and it builds up my hunger to kinda get back in there. That's what I been doing. Dre coming on and me not having to worry about musically what's going to happen on the record — I just focus on lyrics and songs and content — that excites me, to be able to take a little of that pressure off myself and let the master, which is Dre, handle it."

The pioneers haven't hit the studio yet, but Cube is already penning songs.

"I'm writing," Cube said. "[Dre's] doing music. He's also working on his album. We're trying to get [both albums] to come out around the same time. Tour together. Make it a big, full circle."

Cube said he and Dre probably won't be taking their careers a full 360 degrees by participating in a N.W.A reunion.

"As far as I know, that's not gonna happen no time soon," he said. "I don't even know if I want it to happen now because I don't want to mess up what we've already put together, our legacy. Why even tamper with it if it can't be a smooth thing? If it has to be forced it shouldn't be done."

Cube did do a little tinkering with the "Friday" franchise. He's bringing a little holiday cheer to the next installment, "Friday After Next," which hits theaters November 22. That film centers around the misadventures of Ice Cube and Mike Epps, who star as security guards at a mall around Christmas time. There's already talk of a sequel to "Barbershop," and with its $21 million opening weekend, fans can probably look forward to seeing Cube pick up a pair of clippers again.

"It feels good," he said of the film's success, beaming another smile. "It feels like movie audiences are finally getting comfortable with Ice Cube all the way, where they understand I'm gonna only be involved with good projects if I can help it."

"'Barbershop is a hell of movie," he added. "People that thought they was going in to see a comedy might have got sucked into the story. One thing about 'Barbershop,' when you leave, you just feel better about yourself."

Everything but the good times will be rolling in "Torque," in which Cube plays a biker gang leader out to avenge the death of his brother. The project is the first feature film from music video director Joseph Kahn.

Cube said, Hopefully youll see a Cube album produced by Dr. Dre by next year.......then he also said later in the read, that they are wantin' to release both his and Dre's album around the same time......I highly doubt he will get both of this albums out around the same time......wit Rakim's album......Truth said Dres workin' on her next album.....then thrownin' in beats for other catz......I just dont see "both" of these albums droppin' by next year........I hope Dre surprises me tho......... 8)........if not then I wouldnt doubt Cube and Dre's album not to drop for 2-3 years...... :-/

Man.  I love ice cube to death.  But man, this guy has said TONS of stuff before that never even happened.  He said back before the NWA reunion that Dre wouldn't give him a beat, then went so far as to beg dre for a beat on television.  Dre later clarified that he had given Ice Cube 5 beats months ago, and Cube never even called him.  Tons of stuff like that has happened before.  So i'm gonna have to wait to make sure this one is legit, Cube changes his mind too much.

If it DOES happen, it might be the greatest of all time.  Cube has the potential to be the greatest on Wax, in my opinion.  He's tighter than snoop on his good day, and he's already said his next album is gonna be more political.

Being an Ice Cube fan since the jump....I can honestly tell you that this new's is fucken wack as fuck to me. Honestly man, Cube just cheapen's his statis by signing to Aftermath record's. It make's Cube look pathetic and forced to run under Dre's skirt for a hit record.... >:(

I was pissed When Ra signed aswell...cause the same went for him, it seem's like he had to get at Dre for a hit...makes him look desperate.

A couple of track's by Dre would be tight, but not an entire lp.....that would be boring ImO.
And of course all the "Aftermath" fan's will say this is Cube's best cd ever....and it will sell million's & million's cause it's so much better cause of Dre....Fuck all that.

Legend's don't need beat's....PERIOD.

I present the "Peace" album as evidence of where Cube is now.  Come on now.  He doesn't need Dre, but Dre would definately help.  All this means, anyways, is that dre is gonna do a couple beats on his album, and he's been doing that anyways.  Don't get so pissed off.

Legends don't need beats LMAO okay buddy here's some examples of legends who have been criticzed and put out wack albums without high quality beats or former legends who have failed to slsect quality beats and thus been criticised for it ,

Rakim - either of his last albums

Ice Cube - Peace Disc

Nas - Nastradamus

LL Cool J - 14 shots to the dome produced by Marley Marl by the way

Run DMC

Krs One

Snoop Dogg

I can understand you not liking some producers but to blantently saying Legends don't need beats is plain stupid and ignorant, even the legendary Dr Dre needed quality beats to save himself from people saying he was falling off before 2001 had dropped  !!!!!!!

Ya, fuck whoever said legends don't need beats!  That is CRAZY!  The bottom line is mc's albums aren't shit unless they got great production....you can rap your ass off, but if the beats and production are not top notch than most ignorant fans don't care about you.....

As for Dre and Cube, how could any real Ice Cube fan trip on this?  I mean, Cube actually sounds motivated  and i don't think he has been motivated since lethal injection.

Snoop: Wuz up homie?
Homey: Word is on the streets, your beats gone be delicate
since Dre did shake the spea's out, man.

This is the biggest form of dickriding I have ever seen , legends don't need beats ???? Great is great regardless ?What are you smoking, I'm sorry but could someone who isn't to busy being dick jockey for legends Holla ,A legend knows what it takes to put together a quality record as Cube and Rakim did they realized they last shit wasn't up to par and would rather continue to have there names mentioned in legendary circles rather then having another cd fall in the 2 dollar box at cd stores around the US that is a legend my friend not some washed up rapper who had classics from over 10 years ago wishing to rest on there laurels and put out any garbage just because they were 'once legends ' If Ra was looking to cash in just on Dre's name for a quick dollar don't you think he would have jst dropped the first shit dre produced for him just to cash in ??????And there are plenty of other more popular producers Ra could have gone to if he was sellin out ', Neptunes ,Puffy , Tracmasters etc ?No he went to the math to put out quality not make a quick buck ,get ya mind rite ~~~~~~~~~

Dre producing Cube just seems right. Legands don't need beats, as a great lyrist can stand out dispite beats, as Cube did for a while. But right now, why not put together the great westcoast rapper and producer in a union of sorts. Hell, Cube and Dre were suppose to have Helter Skelter, why not now. I wanted to see it then, and 9 years later is better than never. Bring on Cube produce by Dre, great rappers and producers together are good for hip-hop. I'm hyped.

What the fuck? Why am i a hater? I just dont think dres a god like the rest of you. I think hes average. Not bad just not amazing. And my point was that Cube and Dre isnt nessecarly gonna make something classic. They could make something really shitty. Who knows. My point was that the two of the best rappers dont nessecary go great together. (that doesnt mean i think they are the two best rappers
though)

PS. why are these guys the best duo? I thought snoop/dre was the best duo. No wait it was Eminem/dre. But ok now ice cubes on aftermath so its cube/dre. Make up your mind guys. You dre fans think he goes perfect with everyone. In my opinion SUga Free and DJ Quik are the best duo. Why does no one agree with me? Hmmm lets see according to that jd diss dre has sold over "80 million records". Quik and free together havnt sold close to that. They are never on TV. and they arent big enough for you guys to even consider them changing hip hop in any way. Face the facts guys. Some of you seem to care more about an artists fame than its quality.

But what do i know? Im just a dre/eminem hater right?

I don't see how people can hate on this. It's not like Dre and Rakim, two different styles and art forms coming together, this is Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, two members of N.W.A., Natural Born Killaz, Chin Check, Hello and two good friends, that have been wanting to do an album together for along time. D.O.C. messed up the last one by taking the Helther Skelter name, but since all three are cool, and alittle tention between Cube and Dre, first about the east/west wars which Dre didn't agree with but Cube did, then about the N.W.A. reunion which Cube wanted but Dre didn't. Through it all though, both were always cool, and show each other great respects. When they do work together, they do great things, and seprate they have formed great careers as their early work together was the base for two great careers. The Source gave them Life Time Achivement Award at the same time, and it's only fitting that Cube's last album would be produce by Dre, 'cause their careers would come full circle, since Eazy died, and Yella's doing porn, Ren is still underground, and in his own rights has had a legandry career, but Dre and Cube are the two that are the big names, and have proven to work together. It's all good, and I still can't see how people can hate on this, or even doubt. I expect a classic, or something better than what's out, like Scarface.

All you have to do is listen to Natural Born Killaz by Dre and Cube. That shit was tight as fuck,so we know that they have tremendous chemistry. They asked Dre on the radio which song was his all time favorite that he produced and he said natural born killaz!!Oh this was on power 106 back in May.
