Title: What will be the next big trend in rap?
Post by: davida.b. on November 09, 2004, 10:05:55 PM
To me, after the west makes a comeback, Nerd Rap will break into the mainstream. There is no doubt in my mind that that will happen. Just picture it: people like High & Mighty, El P and Aesop Rock will become platinum or gold artists.

the underground will get mainstream recognition without "selling out"...
Title: Re: What will be the next big trend in rap?

saying underground will be the new trend is like saying pop will be the next thing that will be unpopular

...

...

...

yes, you got it! that doesnt work!! as soon as underground is popular, it's no underground anymore and people with underground - syndrom will hate it again :D
Title: Re: What will be the next big trend in rap?
Post by: Leggy Hendrix on November 10, 2004, 07:13:06 AM
ok then the best of the current underground will get the mainstream recognition that they deserve...maybe they will not still be considered underground, but they will retain their integrity and not be pressured into selling out by the record companies etc...

is that better... ::)

Word to Latin Hip Hop. Reggaeton, a close relative to Hip Hop, is blowing up all over right now. Thanks to that N.O.R.E. track and artists like Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon. But, even a cat like Mr. Vegas (True, he doesn't sing in Spanish, but he got HUGE play in Central America in the late 90s.) and people like Nicky Jam and Baby Rasta y Gringo played a big part in blowing up Reggaeton. Out here in the Southwest, Banda Rap/Urban Regional is popular. I know some acts are getting love in the South and NY. As a matter of fact, Akwid and Flakiss were featured on Christina (The Spanish Oprah) with Tego Calderon. And, as far as Latin Hip Hop goes, Pitbull stepped the game up. Terror Squad and Fat Joe will always be there, as will Cypress Hill. But, expect to see A LOT more out of RESPECTABLE Latin artists.

i would have said latin shit and reggeaton too. "Oye Mi Canto" was like the first big reggeaton hit and i guess more are coming. the latin population in the US is growing and so is the number of latin hiphop artists...i hear more and more of that stuff

and paradox, ain't that wishful thinking, kinda? i mean, i dunno how you see that coming...

yeah, but what concretely? the business and its structure can hardly be changed drastically. still i think people tend to dramatize and act like the situation is like creativity, sumthin fresh -> no major deals. that's not true either, people like nas or outkast actually make great and creative music and move major units at the same time. of course that's just like a chosen few and you will always have the ja rules, chingys, j-kwons etc. and they will always be the vast majority of artists appealing to a large audience...that's the way i see it

yeah, i mean, im not saying that there are no good/creative artists on majors who stay true to themselves and release the music that they want to...because there definitely are...i'd say Nas and Outkast are probably 2 of the best examples of that...its just ridiculous to me that guys like chingy, j kwon etc etc are on major labels, making serious money and moving serious units making music that basically has very little substance...when there are guys who make great music, with thought-provoking lyrics, dope beats and so on who wont be heard by the majority because its not whats made "fashionable" and its so different from the majority of stuff that gets played on the radio and shown on mtv...i mean they do get recognition within the industry but often they dont see the level of success that they deserve...just my thoughts...

that'd be cool I guess..

but I dont know if I'd want that to happen.. dunno if I'd like it better if underground stayed underground like it is now instead of goin mainstream.. dunno.

well you might find it ridiculous, but it is actually logical. The music that sells is not the most intelligent and thought-porovoking, but the most entertaining music, and the average listener is more entertained by "Hood Hop" than by Immortal Tech or Slug saying something that might be smart. That's what makes Nas and Outkast so great, they manage to combine this mass appeal with thoughtful lyrics and musical creativity (especially in the case of Outkast), but the latter are just not the main criterias when it comes to pushing units and making money. Great pop artists are those who still include this shit in their method of selling well

Maybe its a latin thing. I never liked the sound of latin music and latin inspired beats. it reminds me of the columbian block parties in my city in the summer.I've been to a few mostly for the beautiful columbian chicks. As for the music I can't appeal to that shit.LOL

Yea, it's a Latin thing. The rhythm isn't gloomy or anything, it's always up beat and happy.

chances are it will be the whole hispanic music scene.....its getting bigger and i could definitely see it getting really big.....it could also be more political type music....a lot of rappers have started in with the political rap if they werent already and i could see more doing it.

i disagree that the underground will breakthrough....not enough people respect the underground to have it breakthrough....i cant imagine ever seeing an immortal technique or atmosphere or eyedea and abilities video on mtv.

i also dont think the west will make a comeback like everyone says it will....people say disco will make a comeback too....wont happen. the west is too stuck back in the 90's and the artists who have decided to change with the times catch crap for it (snoop)....im not saying that they are making good music by changing with the times because a lot of rap sucks right now....but if the west is gonna blow they are gonna have to get a little more poppy.....sadly

No. Boybands that have the same formula like the Backstreet Boys and N-Sync, but then they rap. St. Lunatics is not like that, B2K is.

In the U.K, Ska seems to be making a comeback, there was a shit-hot track on trevor nelson the other week... I just feel that the majority of U.S hip hop needs some shakin up, it needs more innovation and experimentation......

The next big movement will be Love rap.  Instead of people talking about killing each other, and fucking each other's baby momma, they'll talk about nice things, like baking cookies and inviting each other to the park for a bar-b-cue.
