Title: Is the West Coast becoming "cool" again???
Post by: LakersAlldaWay on November 10, 2004, 06:24:29 PM
I was flipping around while watching the Laker game, and I came across that new Destiny's Child video for Soldier ft. TI and Lil Wayne. Its a really stripped down video without many different scenes or shots. The main scene has a lowrider in the back of a white room with a license plate that reads "CRENSHAW." I was kinda confused because no westcoast rapper is in the song. Then I started to notice that everyone in the video had khakis on and dodger caps and gear. Even Destiny's child had shirts that said "Compton" on them.  Shit, then I started to see the extras in the video clown walking and crip walking, and then out of no where Ice Cube pops up in one of the scenes. Even Destiny's Child started to get their walk on, lol.

I know it may be an overreaction but this video got me thinking: Is the west on its way to becoming "cool" again? I know its always been considered cool, but its really taken a backstep in the mainstream media over the last 5 years or so. For example, that Guerilla Black song with Beenie Man, Compton, was shot all in Compton, that Destiny's Child one had a Compton and westcoast theme, and Game's shooting his video for How We Do in Compton this weekend.

Is the mainstream ready to re-embrace the westcoast back into whats hip? I just wanted to get your opinions...

I think there is a "shift" happening back to the West right about now...

Snoop is number one on TRL...
The Game w/ 50 and DJ Quik spinnin' the records was up in the TRL studios in Time's Square...

There's more Westcoast activity being picked up by non-Cali media

I hope this continues and the West blows up again.

I think the Destiny's Child song talks about L.A., but I know it talks about the SOuth and NY, too.

That's what the fuck's up.

Yeah, the west coast is definitely becoming "cool" at the time. It's evident from things like that video and Fat Joe's video bein all in L.A. showin Crenshaw, and even how they got GTA San Andreas which is a 110% west coast game. I know they started developin that game a long time ago, so it is a bit of a coincidence that it comes out at this time, but even though it's just a video game, it still brings a lot of attention to L.A.

All we need now is another hood movie and we are set.

yea i forgot about GTA.

im thinking like the powers that be who can really tell which direction hip-hop culture, even pop culture is going feel that a switch to more westcoast is coming soon. GTA mite be an example. also, if Guerilla Black really isnt from Compton, why would his label market him as being from there? maybe they felt as if a switch to the west becoming more popular in hip hop was around the corner. i dont know, its really hard and confusing analyze this, but i always hope that the west will get its due shine very soon

California has 36 million people. Now the other places don't want to the west to shine... but they will market themselves to westcoast markets. If putting a video in Crenshaw is going to sell you another 500,000 CDs... would you do it?

I felt hella disrespected when i heard this song.  I aint seen the video, but im sure it aint got nothin to do with reppin the west.  The video shows luv all the regions, not just LA, but, new york , and down south.  But the song tells a different story.  You  listen to the lyrics, they say something liike girls liking dudes talkin that east coast slang (beyonce) and kelly says somethin like girls likin dudes talkin that southern country slang, but aint nobody mention west coast slang.  They talk about brooklyn, to gold grills in mouths(south).   The closest they get to referring to the west in the songs is i think saying somethin about dickies.  Beyonce talkin bout east known for they low waves and shit, but from what i know and what i heard, the west started that shit, or is more known for it.  They got TI and lil wayne on there, no west coast representers.  There's reference to harlem.  Yeah, they talkin bout impalas and lacs in the song, but referring to south in that aspect.  They aint talkin bout no real lolo's.  Listen to the song, check the lyrics.

So basically, i aint seen the video, but that song most definitly aint makin it cool for the west.  More like a slap in the mufuckin face
