Let the people speak...
In my mind a
rapper - someone who raps
rap star - someone who raps, but takes his music to a very high mainstream level
my vote, yes...
-
Sorry homie...
but Snoop was not even close to being the first star in hip-hop (imO)
check anything before 1992.. ;)
Check the people who inspired his steeze...
Dana Dane & Slick Rick... :-X
Hatesrats 2oooFoe

naw hell no he wasn't man. I started getting into rap in 93. Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were already both huge rap stars waaaaaaaay before snoop dogg.
These are the rappers who got me into rap before I can ever remember hearing snoop dogg:
cypress hill
onxy
naughty by nature
public enemy
2pac
many rappers were big before snoop dogg. dr. dre and snoop dogg could arguably be the first huge and successful rap stars that really brought gangsta rap to the mainstream. but then you argue that up against NWA, and imo, NWA wins that one.
-
First off, I know Dana Dane and Slick Rick. But their impact wasn't mainstream.
Snoop took 'Snoop Dogg' , 'Snoopafella' from Dana
Snoop took 'Lodi Dodi' , 'G Bedtime Stories' from Slick
oh, and teenage love by slick, is a classic...
-
I'm talking Rap Star, not Rappers
look, you guys seem to think I was born in 1992, in Snoop's bed. I was born in 1982 and grew up listening to a lot of music. Whether it's Naughty By Nature in their OPP days, ONYX in their Slam Days or Tupac in his Brenda's got a baby day... Snoop was the first rap star...2 cents
-
dude are u smoking crack? first u place last meal over doggystyle, now this?
p.s. how do snoop dogg's balls taste in your mouth?
-
I would say Run DMC were raps' first superstars. Their Raising Hell album sold 3 million copies in '86/'87 and they had an international tour. That was unheard of in those days when it came to rap music. They were the first rap act to ever have a video on MTV with "Rock Box". I think they were the first rappers to have major corporate endorsement deals too cause if Kurtis Blow had a deal with Sprite I'm sure the biggest rap act at the time had something too.
-
ima say run dmc as well..they was like the only 1's to crossover to other music as well...and collab wit rockstars ...run dmc were the 1st rap stars..hands down..yea..
slick rick nem wasnt on the same level as run nem...they had white fans nationwide from the gitty..
-
I'd like to see what do you say to explain why LL Cool J wasn't a mainstream rap star.
-
In terms of worldwide impact, media attention, controversey and critical praise, Snoop was raps first superstar. When Doggystyle came out Snoop blew up everywhere, not just North America but the world, he broke records in the music industry. I remember when he first came over to the Europe he was all over television and publications unlike any other rapper before him. He was literally the poster boy for rap music at the time and his music, style and attitude couldn't be fucked with. Between 93-95 Snoop was as good as a household name worldwide. Run DMC had superstar staus but not to the point where their debut albums first week sales have only been topped 10 years later.
-
BPG - Your problem is, when you say "I was around before Snoop!" you list Onyx, Naughty By Nature, and Tupac, which were all what, 91, 92, 93? Man, you're not even out of the fucking 90'S!
-
He's too young to know...
How old were you when doggystyle came out BPG? can you remember when it dropped clear as day? be honest... I can because i was 16.
the generation that blew up before snoop was..
Ice-T, Vanilla Ice, Ice Cube..
before that... i'll admit i'm not sure..
For sure LL Cool J and Run DMC
-
To say Snoop was rap's first rap star is a statement that says you are on Snoop's nuts because if you have a little bit of hip-hop historian in you like I do I thought ya would have said Run DMC and LL Cool J were rap's first big stars
-
Just to give BPG the benefit of the doubt, though, I think it could be argued that Snoop was the BIGGEST Rap star when he came out, bigger than everybody before. He was no where near the first, though. I think the first Rap stars I was into were the Fat Boys, LOL. They weren't huge stars (err... well, yeah, they were physically huge) but there were tons of rappers who were mainstream superstars way before Snoop. Even DRE was around before Snoop, I mean comeon. There was a time, believe it or not BPG, when Snoop was Dre's backup, lol, Dre was the show. Cube was even blown up before Snoop came along, Eazy, LL, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Run DMC, etc. etc etc

I cant believe hammers name has'nt found its way to this thread....not only was hammer raps first superstar hip hop soloist.....but he was a west coast artist and his first cd was full of bay area influence(feel my power). He had it goin on yall....he had endorsements from pepsi...kfc....british knights....movie sound tracks, dude was on oprah and hosting snl
and all types of shit....I recognize hammer before any other(solo) artist when it comes to bringing hip hop to the masses...
run dmc was the first group to do this
-
^ if you look up 3rd reply down.. hammer was mentioned by acgrundy ;)
-
HELL NO man
u got run-dmc
LL cool J
and ice cube
cube was all over the place in 1990-1992
he used to go platinum in 4 days and shit
he did eminem numbers back in the days
-
Yeah I have to say Def Jam was big in the ol' days.
Run DMC - no doubt in my mind....I always felt they really brought rap to the mainstream
LL Cool J
Beastie Boys
Fat Boys
Public Enemy
Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of good rappers/groups then but I felt these guys started bringing rap to the main stream...
If I asked a non hip-hop fan to name a Run DMC song, they will probably say "Walk This Way" but for Snoop, my guess is that they won't name a Doggystyle track...I guess they will say "Beautiful or Drop it Like Its Hot"....but that's just my opinion...

First off, the only reason I mentioned those artists were because Acgrundy said they were rapstars before Snoop... I was giving my answer back to him. I was born in 1982, so I was 10 when Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle came out. But my days of rap music began when I was 8. My neighbor, who was a big hip hop head, gave me a Fresh Prince album, which featured one of my favorite songs 'Nightmare on Elm Street' ... in fact almost everyday I was down in her basement listening to music that she liked, such as Run DMC, Beastie Boys... 'whatcha whatcha whatcha want' ... Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J with his love anthems and his Mama gonna knock you out. We listened to Pharcyde and Digital Underground, De La Soul, The Tribe, Marley Marl, Joe Fatal, Kool G Rap, Biz Marike, Big Daddy Kane and tons of other artists... the fact is...I'M NOT STUCK IN THE 90's.. at my age, my focus was not on rap, but trust me, I've listened and try to know as much hip hop as possible. Whether it's Nelly or Helta Skeltah, Trick Daddy or Gang Starr, 50 Cent or Fu-Schnickens, I think I know what I'm talking about that you know what I'm talking about. I still hold my opinion.
If you asked any average music listener to name one rapper....I can guarantee you Snoop Dogg would be a prominate answer... and that's because he was the first Star of rap... He was above rap... was not in it... and that's not me riding his nuts, that's me examining what hip hop was before he arrived and how it's changed since his arrival.
All the rappers you guys name, with respect to your replys, were not HUGE... a star step's aside from their entertainment and embody what it is at the moment.
A Movie Star is Tom Cruise, an actor is Tom Hanks ... the difference being... Tom Cruise stood out at one time. Tom Hanks is an excellent actor, but a star? You ask anyone to name an actor I guarantee you, more people will say Tom Cruise over Tom Hanks...yet they both broke into the industry around the same time.
A Rock Star Is Kiss...A Musician is Santana... my 2 cents

I still hold my opinion.
Your opinion is wrong.

BPG, AGAIN, you missed the point.
You said Snoop was rap's first star, then you said you were 10 when Doggystyle came out, but that you started listening when you were 8. BIG FUCKING DEAL, you still started listening in the NINETIES. You're ignorant enough to think anything outside the scope of your existance is irrelevant. Rap was here before you were, you have to imagine that, and imagine that even though you weren't around to see it, there actually WERE superstars before Snoop.
I mean, come on man. You're being pretty fuckin' arrogant to try and act like nobody before you started listening was important. Also, how the fuck would you know? You weren't even listening then!
-
I was hella young when Doggystyle came out...Yes it was sumthing new but I wasnt looking for that, There was Naughty By Nature , House Of Pain and Vanilla Ice ...Im a Snoop fan but he aint the first for sure...
-
^ I'm a huge fan too! ... but no matter how much you like somebody, you can't make them first if they weren't first. Like I said, you could argue he was the biggest, but not the first.
-
^ I'm a huge fan too! ... but no matter how much you like somebody, you can't make them first if they weren't first. Like I said, you could argue he was the biggest, but not the first.
man Even Kriss Kross had mainstream success and thats before Snoop came out on the scnene, damn I miss those jumpin days

snoop was the first gangsta rap superstar........maybe.......if you like to ignore nwa and dr dre

KID N PLAY!!!!

You're ignorant enough to think anything outside the scope of your existance is irrelevant.
Good point. So basically your saying that I believe that everything I didn't expierence first hand did not exist.
Look I understand the impact artists had on rap... I do, no matter how hard you believe I don't. I understand that before Snoop Dogg, there were people and artists who worked hard to get rap where it was at the time. I understand that DJing was perfected by Grandmaster Flash. I understand that the Sugarhill gang was the first fabricated rap group, but either way, those artists worked hard. HOWEVER... Rap was not mainstream at the time. Yes, a few songs made the airwaves. RUN DMC paved the way for a lot of what happened. Their impact on rap was enormous. Yes, they were icons at the time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that where RUN DMC was at their prime, is where Snoop was at his. Snoop became an icon, he was RAP. When I look back at hip hop during the eighties, I don't imagine a mainstream audience putting Run DMC up like a poster child. Snoop was that.
lets take rock and roll. it's been argued that The Beatles were the first Rock Stars. Correct me if I'm wrong, but rock did not start with The Beatles. They just elevated to a, here's the keyword, MAINSTREAM AUDIENCE, everywhere the beatles went, the world followed suit. The media wanted to know where the beatles were, what they were working on. Girls loved them. Guys wanted to be them. That's a STAR... their music captivated listeners.
That's my 2 cents. I'm not ignorant to the fact. That's just my opinion. I'm not dis-crediting anyones work at brining hip hop to where it was. I'm just saying. If you look at RAP STARS, I see... Tupac, BIGGIE, Eminem, Jay-Z and now 50 Cent. They are taking rap right now. Snoop Dogg was there before all them. I'm not saying people didn't like other artists before Snoop. I'm just saying. The mainstream audience finally caught on to what rap was when Snoop and the westcoast became a sensation... and they took Snoop and made him a poster child for that era. I do think, the only group you can argue in this argument is that RUN DMC were the first stars of rap...but they definetely were not advertised the way Snoop was. He was the first rapper grandma's were listening to, in a study two years ago at Harvard, when asked to name a Rapper... 77% percet of the people surveyed said Snoop Dogg, that's a big percentage. RUN DMC captivated black culture, broke into radio, got on MTV... they paved the way, but they weren't almighty, girls screaming, UK'ers swimming across the atlantic to see them popular. Snoop was the first rapper that did that.
That's my 2 cents. And I respect those who gave their opinions. There's no need to judge me or anyone else. It's a message board where we express opinions. We are suppose to have different opinions. If I ever agreed with Trauma, which I never have, and we love to argue with each other, then this board would be boring.

look man....I like snoop as much as the next man but you werent there to see the hysteria artists like run dmc would bring ....them fools had movies....shoe deals......WORLD tours where people overseas were crying and shit and every where you went people were trying to imitate run dmc's styles just like snoop....every generation has its icons and its ALMOST understandable that you cant percieve that pre gangsta rap artisis were larger then or almost as large snoop but this is what people call a generation gap......
-
I was thinking about them too. Run DMC was fucking huge in the 80's. I wasn't even really a rap head in the 80's, being I was only like 6-9 during the last parts of the 80's. But anyways, I remember Run DMC, they were at Wrestlemania, they had shoe deals, they had a song with Aerosmith. They were the first big rap stars that fucked up the mainstream. then of course you got the Fat Boys, LL Cool J, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Kid N Play.
Now was Snoop a huge rap star, no doubt. His place in history, up there with 2Pac, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Notorious BIG and 50 Cent and DMX for impact, skillz, flow, and mainstream sucess. His top 10 in any list, and he put his place in rap history. We'll see how his career ends, for the first time ever, I saw a new Snoop CD, R&G, and I didn't buy it, instead buying old Xzibit CDs that got stolen from me earlier in life. That has never happened. Except with The Game Is To Be Sold..., but every Snoop tape/CD has been bought at first sight. So his future in my opinion is not that bright. His place is set, others before him have came, he came, others are coming out now. It's like everything else in life. Past, Present, Future.
-
He wasn't raps first superstar because you can't forget sell-outs like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice.
Yet he was raps first superstar that was organic. Meaning he looked like a brother from around the way, he dressed like a brother from around the way, and in the mid-90's, he was still living like a brother from around the way cause Suge kept him gangsta and broke.
-

I was around 10 when Run DMC came out and even though I wasn't a hiphop head yet, I knew about them already, everyone at my elementary school knew about them. It was a big fuckin deal when they came out to Long Beach to perform so yeah, those were rap's first superstars. If you weren't around at that time, you wouldn't understand how major they were.
