LOS ANGELES -- A stop at a fast-food restaurant over the weekend has cost a 70-year-old woman her entire life's savings.
Maria Concha Morales is distrustful of banks, so she was carrying $17,000 in a purse. The money was the savings she was able to set aside from her 40 years toiling away as a farmworker.
During a stop Saturday at a Burger King in Bakersfield, the purse -- and all her money -- disappeared.
Relatives say they don't know if Morales misplaced the bag or it was stolen. The purse also contained Morales' identification documents.
Morales had planned on using the money to make a down payment on a home.
Bakersfield police are reviewing the tapes in the hopes of recovering the cash.
