Title: Who wrote what for Dre?
Post by: UWA 187 on January 12, 2005, 10:37:08 PM
Just wondering who wrote what verses for Dre? Someone made a thread the other day about Kurupt doing "Chin Check", and Snoop says in Welcome To Death Row DVD that he done "Nuthin' But A G Thang". Anyone know any others?

Em wrote "The Watcher" and "Forgot about Dre" (said it was his idea), and I think he wrote dre's shit for his J.D. diss on one of his albums or whatever.  And yeah, Royce wrote "The Message" for Dre, there's a song really similar to it on one of his albums.

Title: Re: Who wrote what for Dre?

He's had quite a few ghostwriters that've either written all his lines on a track or co-wrote it or whatever, here's what I can put together from looking at various credits:

Knoc-Turn'al wrote The Wash, Bad Intentions, Put It On Me & Your Wife ( Dre's rhymes only )

Eminem wrote The Watcher, Forgot About Dre, Let's Get High, Bang Bang, Bitch Please II, Guilty Conscience,
Bad Guys Always Die, Say What You Say, Shit Hits The Fan & Encore

Off "2001", Dre's verses for Big Ego's and What's The Difference were written by some dude named Punch, who I read in an interview also goes by the name "Yykkes" ( from L.A. Confidential )...The D.O.C. wrote Dre's lines in "Housewife" and he wrote something for Big Ego's too, since he's also credited for that

Hittman wrote Dre's parts in Light Speed, Fuck You, The Next Episode & Bitch Niggaz

Just Dippin by Bad Azz, Hittman & Kurupt ( Bad Azz wrote for Snoop, Hittman wrote for Dre, not too sure what Kurupt did )

Chin Check - Kurupt

Hello - Eminem

The Watcher II - Rakim

Xzibit's "U Know" off Restless, I think Xzibit wrote all verses, including Dre's

Symphony In X Major - Dre's lines written by Knoc-Turn'al, though he's uncredited

that's all the recent stuff, going back to "2001" period

i saw a Dre interview in german MTV, and dre was asked whether its true or not that jayz wrote the lyrics to still DRE
dre said something similar like this:'yea, its true. its no shame to get ones lyrics by one of the greatest lyricist (not sure about that word though ;D) right now.
i got great respect for jay-z, thats why i let him write it'

well, thats not a quote, but its very close to it - and i can remember very well the interview, and no - i wasnt on drugs ;D

I believe this but this is just pathetic to have someone else write every song you ever did.  I know Dre is a pioneer and knows talent and beats but other than that, he is just an image.

Well I mean, at no point did Dre ever come out and say that he was an 'artist'. From day one, his initial title has been 'producer', hence the fact that we've only had 2 solo albums from him. For Dre to match the dopeness of his production, I guess he feels he has to make sure that the rhymes live up to the beats, so he enlists trustworthy writers to hook him up. I can see why many cats would dog on him for not writing shit himself, but it's not like he's a real 'rapper'. It's like how Eminem is a rapper who produces, Dr. Dre is a producer who raps. Good point, anyone can write, like you said, though not everyone can really drop something hella nice. I know he wrote his own shit on several tracks from Efil4zaggin, it'd be nice to hear some original shit from Dre, now with Detox, he's got the chance to do it. Who knows, he might surprise us...

Also, notice how shit that people write for dre is often hotter than their own shit?  I read or saw someplace once that how it works is Dre throws "concepts" at writers with an idea of the structure of songs and shit, and his ghost writers do the actual word placement and syllibolic placement and shit like that.

exactly.. people make it sound mindless...

dre is a producer.. he "produces" the final product.. that doesnt mean he plays or writes -anything on the song- but he is the overseeing guiding hand in the process.. "tweak this" "scrap that" etc etc and his golden ear is trusted by many.

Is becomin a great producer he did that track wit macy gray on 8 mile, mel man nuff said! Mark Batson (agen mite of fucked up his name) new talent dre is moldin in his image, warren G even had production lessons from dre.

In Conclusion i think dre is makin new beat makers in the business so havin them work wit him on songs he can advise them and show them the way to produce.

I figured that Rakim wrote Dre's verse on "Watcher II" based on this evidence. First, the lyrics and flow sound completely Rakim-like, listening to it, it's really hard to imagine Hittman or someone else writing it, aside from maybe Eminem. And no other rappers are credited in the writing credits for the track. A couple of years back, that Mellowman dude was talking about it on this board, and he denied rumors that Jay-Z wrote Dre's verse, revealing that someone else on the same track actually wrote it. Unless Truth Hurts is a fuckin dope writer, I'd say it was Rakim, hands down.

I wouldn't even call these solo-albums... It's more like Nate Dogg has "Nate Dogg & Friends" and Dre has "The Chronic & 2001". There sure is a difference in quality of those albums though  ;)

But about your point... I don't mind Dre having others to actually rhyme the writes for him. It's been proven, Dre's songs are amazing - often better than the writers/rhymers would write for themselves. Since Dre even makes up the concept for the tracks, you can't complain about his true feelings for the songs either, it's just that he's not good at rhyming so he's getting assistance on that. Be grateful for Dre for admitting that - otherwise he would have had amazing beats, good concepts for songs but wack rhymes. Would be a damn waste.

actually Dr. Dre is just a name. he got ghost writers & ghost producers. that song "Light Speed" on 2001 was produced by Fred Wreck and written by Hittman. if you check out the credits - he dont even play an instrument.

so - Dr. Dre is really just a good mixer (if even that)

You guys are meaning the true meaning of the word, producer.  Quincey Jones didn't get creds by just sending a hot bear over to someone.  He did it with guidance, vision and a drive to make an artist the best they can be.  That is what Dre does, he gets the best out of everyone, he knows how he wants the music and he will make the best come out like a real producer does.

If you wanna know who wrote what for Dre, listen to his flow on the song... more likely than not, he imitates the flow of whoever wrote the song for him... i remember reading that Dre would have some artists record his verses so he could get a proper flow... The obvious examples are the songs written by Knoc and listen to his verse on "Ghetto Fabulous," that was obviously written by Razzy Kazzy... peace

ThaFormula.com - So now comes your album. What I want to know is how was it recording "No One Can Do It Better" because that was the only album that I can remember where Dre produced it all by himself, without the help of any other co-producer or whatever. It was just you and Dre. This is the album I always tell people to explain to me when they say Dre can't produce by himself or that he jacks everybody's beats. There was no one to jack for your album right?

D.O.C. - Well, let me explain something to you and you can print this so your people will understand. I went through this shit with Daz and now they're going through this shit with Mel-Man. Let me tell you something. What Dr. Dre gives those young men, they can't give you enough money for, what that guy gives these young producers that are trying to come up. The only reason Dre even has anybody else in there fucking with him is because he's lazy. That's the only reason. When Dre is in the studio, that shit is coming out of his mind and none of these other guys are responsible for it and I was there from day 1, 'till fuckin' '94 or '95 when I had to leave. Then I came back because doing records with Dre is like going to school, because if you sit and you watch, and you look and you learn, the guy is teaching you how to make great records. Now with this new record I made, I'm only doing what Dre would have did, and I used my own judgment. The one thing that Dr. Dre is missing now is D.O.C. and that's the same way that I would tell those young guys, hey that sucks! I would tell Dre's big ass the same shit. Hey, I love you, and your the greatest of all time, but that's bullshit!

BTW producing isn't just about playing instruments and making beats. Rock bands have producers - Do you think they play all the instruments??

Look at all the old stuff like Jimmy Z and Michel'le and the Skinny Boyz these are all albums produce by.Dre he plays Keyboards and drums, there was an old interview in Keyboards where they were showing his studio,he has one of the best drum sets in the music business as well as keyboards there was another interview a while back and it shows him playing both drums and piano which hes not the best but it does sound good.theres also interviews with some of the people he works with like Tommy Coster Jr. and Camara Kambon I read somewhere when they both were ask how does Dre produce does he even play insrtuments they both said yes he does,Dre play like a ruff draft(like missing notes and stuff like that) keyboards of course, and they go right behind him to make what he just did better with him (Dre) telling them thats the wrong sound or the wrong notes. Most of the good interviews are in stuff like Keyboards and Studio mags which to me is a little better because they go behind the music and talk to all his staff even his old staff.I think I read interviews of all his musician and his project coordinators like the Chatman brothers.
