This is somewhat of an offspin of my other thread about Game as an artist and if anybody else could be as successful.
Now that we see that this album has become successful as hell on all levels, mainly because it's a good album that was promoted in an exceptional way, I have to ask another question that I think will spark up good debate.
All of us have to admit that this album never in life woulda sold as much as it did without the extreme hype and promotion that it had. So....depending on how strong you think this album is overall, and considerin the appeal that it has...being 100% honest...do you think that any west coast release since Dre 2001 could have been this successful as an album if it had received the same amount of hype and promotion, but the album was the exact same product?
I know this is a hard thing to compare, because that would mean that for example, if we use Bad Azz's Personal business, this means Bad Azz would not have had 50 cent on the hit songs, he wouldn't have been on TV with 50, and he wouldn't have been shoutin on G-Unit. So instead of discussin the impact that Game's affiliations had on his sales, lets just speak product vs product. Are there any albums you feel would have sold as much, nearly as much, or even more than Game's is going to sell, based on the CD itself?
This is NOT just askin "what west coast albums were better than Game's?" but really askin, do you think any of these "better" albums would have sold more, based on the artists and producers featured, and just the overall quality of the album and the appeal that it had? Personally, I doubt there are any west coast albums that could have sold this much, even if I feel they were better albums. The fact that this album doesn't sound like a typical west coast album is one reason that everybody can get into it. And I have to say that as bad as it may be, this is a fact....if Game still had 5-6 of the main songs that would be singles, but the rest of it sounded like typical modern day west coast rap, such as havin Fred Wreck Quik and Battlecat on it, people outside the west would not be on this album as hard as they are, and that's just the sad truth. This is why I feel that there are not any other west coast albums since 2001 that would have been this big even with the promotion, because people outside the west usually don't feel our music in the same way that we do.
Now if the west had remained in the spotlight after 2001, this would have been a lot different. And I feel that we still may have a chance to appeal to everyone even with a west coast style since Game has broke through, but we have to be patient. True, southerners and east coast people are sayin "The west is back" due to the hype and the fact Game told them, but if they hear a DJ Quik or G-Funk type of song, they are not gonna react any different from how they did a year ago. It's gonna take the industry to release many west coast artists to where the west coast sound as a whole makes a return to the mainstream, and that's somethin that I'm not sure is gonna happen yet.

Hmm...I think that Yukmouth's ''Godzilla'' could have sold a lot more than what it did if it had received the same level of promotion that The Game has earned. In a similar vein to ''The Documentary'', it had a mix of songs that appeal to different groups. For example, Yuk had a club banger in ''Nothin' 2 A Bo$$'', Game had two in ''Higher'' and ''How We Do''; Yuk had a track that appeared to be aimed at a female audience in ''I Want Ya Body'', Game had ''Special''; etc. Yukmouth's record also had more than a few songs that were clearly aimed at a commercial audience, as does The Game. This is not a shot at either artist, it appears you have to have those kind of cuts to sell major units these days.
Obviously, Yuk's album didn't have the same big-name producers but it didn't detract from the album as, for the most parts, I found the beats on that album to be solid. Furthermore, the instrumentals featured did not seem to have a predominately West Coast sound. Had the album blown up worldwide, I feel many people would have embraced the overall sound of the album. However, promotion can only get you so far. When you ask if any album could have sold as much as ''The Documentary'' alone I would have to say 'no'. The reason being that there are many other factors that contribute to an album's overall success - Game had the G-Unit connection as you mentioned, plus he also put in major work in the mixtape circuit and even in the days of ''UKNOWWHATITIS Vol. 1'' he had recorded collaborations with relatively big-name acts like Fab, E-40, Loon, etc. Not to mention that The Game has been bestowed with the title of ''Dr. Dre's protege'' so many times - that has inevitably turned a few heads.
Whether there are ''Better'' albums or not it cannot be denied that, despite The Game's talent, several factors beyond mere publicity and the quality of the CD have had a huge impact on his sales. Yuk's album wasn't lacking the sound, it wasn't lacking radio material, the biggest thing that it lacked was promotion. It would have sold more with this but, as I've stated, Yuk still didn't have the complete package to rival Game sales-wise. He's just the closest competitor that comes to mind when I consider West Coast album (minus the typical big names) that have dropped over the past few years.

Good response. I heard about 5-6 songs from that album, and personally, it wasn't doin a whole lot for me, not because of him or whatever but it just wasn't movin me much. But I agree that the whole package that went into Game's album is what helped it become a lot more successful. I have heard a lot from Yuk, and even though he's beefin with the people I am down with (Black Wall Street) I am never the type to say "fuck _____" because they beef with somebody I am cool with. And I have always said he has talent and comes off hard on some songs, but I just haven't got into him much as an artist. If he came as hard on every track on an album as he did on the Game disses, then he prolly could get a lot more respect as a whole, but it seems like he doesn't bring that energy on every track.

I understand your opinion man, and I agree with you in that Yuk is not always consistent. However, if you get the chance you should give the rest of the album a listen. There are a few good cuts on there.

Yeah I need to peep my homeboy's copy of it.
Jus to let people kno, I am definitely not one of those "LA" only people who doesn't like bay music. I really could give a fuck if it's bay or LA if it's tite. It's just that naturally I don't get to hear some of their music because I'm from LA, but when I do hear it, I play it like it's my homeboy's CD.

^^ Yeah homie, np, you're a cool dude.. 8)

everyone keeps saying that Godzilla would blow up if it got the same amount of promotion...nah it wouldnt. lets be honest, yuk doesnt appeal to very many people outside of the west and parts of the south. i d nt think ny would jump on him NEARLY as much they did with game

Who cares about NY? So the only way to let NY dj's play a West Coast CD is to let a rapper who sounds like an East Coast rapper rap over Dre beats? Or to let Snoop rap over a Pharrell or Timbo beat? Damn that's wack if that's how it is! :-\

if a rapper gets mega hype in New York and hes not from New York, thats a pretty good indication of how they will be recieved around the country
