I've been listening to The D.O.C's "No one can do it better" album today - damn, that sure is a fucking hot album! But that's when I realised... What the hell happened to his voice in such a short period of time? "No one can do it better" was released in 1989 and his voice sounds allright there, nothing wrong with it. Only 3 years later, on "The Chronic" we all remember him doing the $20 Sack Pyramid with a voice which sounds more like The Madd Rapper.
It's probably just that I'm too young - I wasn't actively listening to hiphop back when NOCDIB and The Chronic hit the shelves, but I'm just wondering... What the hell happened to The D.O.C's voice? He really sounds like he's suffered from cancer in his throat, or got shot in it or something.

he was involved in a serious car crash and lost his voice. :-\
-
He had an car accident, as far as I know. :(

yep, but its good that he still writes, hes dope as shit,
-
yeah he had a car accident shortly after his record dropped... (NOCDIB)

Its really sad, he's probably my favorite rapper.

Was driving home late, and fell asleep at the wheel, got thrown through the windshield, all of the glass shattered his voicebox. He now uses it as an excuse for why he's wasted his whole life away. Go get "Heltah Skeltah", it's a halfway decent album he made after he lost his voice, that remake of one of the songs he did on 'no one can do it better' is worth the price of the album in my opinion. I like that one about him digging himself out of his grave or whatever, too. Man, that could have been SUCH A killer gimmick. When life throws you lemons, make lemonade.

lol... nice summar.. he doesnt use it as an excuse.. but he said something like it fucked him up and made him depressed n stuff for many years.. so he drank a lot and did a lot of drugs..
-
Damn, that's harsch right there. Thanks for informing me, everyone ;D I wonder what his career would have been like say he hadn't had that car accident ::)
Ah well, it's good to know he's still active in the music biz writing songs and all that... That's at least something, there's others who came out worse from a car accident...

The actual truth of the incident was that Doc was driving home from doing a double music video shoot (Beautiful but deadly, the formula). He didn't actually fall asleep, Dre said DOC was legally drunk (way above the limit) and crashed like Trauma said. Dre said that D.O.C. was the inspiration behind "don't drink that wine - MAAD( motherfuckers against drunk driving) on EFIL4ZAGGIN. The accident definetly cut short the career of one of the best rappers (in my humble opinion) EVER. Dre has said that him and DOC had a better chemistry than anyone he has ever worked with. Hope this helps answer your question a little more specifically.

^^yep..

Yeah D.O.C. reps the Dirty for the West in a talented way!

yall niggas have no idea what happened to D.O.C.. What really happened was D.O.C. walked into Ruthless offices and Eazy-E handed him his yearly check and all of a sudden the nigga lost his voice.

Thanks for all your replies, I really appreciate it.
I wonder if having another voice box implanted would help getting his career back on track... He'll probably never sound the same again, but let's just hope he can get back to recording tracks with Dre again one day...
-
^ uhh he already did with Dre on Deuce...
