Title: DOES LENGTH MATTER?!
Post by: Lord Funk on August 22, 2002, 09:03:07 AM
No guys, I’m not after your opinions on average dick size.

I’m talking about albums. I’m sure a lot of people here would agree that The Fix is one of the hottest albums out at the moment. But one thing I’ve read about it a lot is that, at about 45 minutes, it’s too short.

I disagree. In my opinion, people are too used to getting 20+ songs on a CD, even if a quarter to a third of them are filler. I just can’t see the point of it – no other genre of music works that way, and it underlines the fact that hip hop is treated as a commodity rather than art.

If Warren G came out with the Regulate album today, people would laugh – it was only about 35 minutes long. But I think that’s what made it a classic – Warren narrowed it all down to 10 first-rate jams and put it out. Same with Face’s new album. AZ’s Aziatic, another dope recent album, also clocks in at about three quarters of an hour. Knoc was right to put out an EP – I’d rather hear six straight bangers than a bunch of filler, and it’s got nothing to do with how much money I’ve spent on it.

No disrespect to anyone’s skills, but I can think of VERY few rappers that hold down 70-odd minute long albums without letting up. Give me any album that length – bar Quik’s Rhythmalism in my opinion – and I’d bet there’s something that could have got left on the studio cutting floor, be it skits or filler tracks.

If the topic interests people, I’ll post who I blame for this in a minute (it all boils down to one individual if you ask me). But what do y’all think? Would you rather albums were shorter and more focused, or do you need rappers to fill up every last second of space on a CD to warrant purchase??…

I would rather have the album short and sweet rather than long and drawn out with a bunch of tracks that need skipping.

regulate
bow down
its on 187um dr. dre killa

Long Live The Kane (10 tracks)
Strictly Business (10 tracks)...etc.

I feel you on that 100% Lord_Funk.  I'd rather have a CD where I don't have to skip any tracks.  A lotta CD's now WOULD be 40-50 minutes long if they cut out the filler, boring tracks.  So just cut 'em out to begin with!

One album that I CAN name that is 68 minutes long that has no filler, IMO, is Bone Thugs E. 1999.

As AcGrundy420 mentioned, short and dope albums are:

1. Eazy-E   187um Killa
2. Westside Connection    Bow down
3. Warren G   Regulate
plus
4. Nas   Illmatic
5. Scarface   The Diary
6. Scarface   The Fix
......there's many others...

BTW, Lord_Funk, who do you blame for this?  Is it Master P?

i prefer to listen to a long album, that has like 20 tracks on there. cause then you got your money's worth, but you still get more music. and most long album's i've bought are one's i could play str8 thru. like dr. dre - "2001", & yukmouth - "thugged outt: albulation".

man we just got lazy artist why cant everyone drop a long cd with no bull shit like dres "chronic" and "2001" shit those there are straight bangers no doubt and dont skip a track on there you just need to put your time and effort into it and we get great albums i would rather have an artist make 1 great album in like 3 years time than 2 in 3 years time just make sure a album is finished not half assed

I don't care how long it is. As long as 90% of the songs are bangers. Most of the time long albums have too much filler with very few exceptions like The Chronic, 2001, All Eyez On Me, Aquemini, etc. The classic albums from the past are usually no more than 12 tracks.

Illmatic is short. And its one of the best hip hop albums ever made.

Less guest apperences the better. I buy an album to hear that artist. Not 20 guests on the album. I wanna hear the atist express himself. I wanna see if he can pull a whole album off, by himself.

I know I'd choose an album with just 5 bangin' tracks than an album with 15 boring ones. But like it was said, albums like The Chronic are the best, since they straight bang and the only skit there has been thought about and pondered than just have niggaz giggle over some ho to the mic. The 20 Dollar Sack Pyramid has got to be the best skit on any album.

Oh yeah, there's Deeez Nuts too... But it's a classic skit too.

Apologies for bumping this shit back up, but I didn't have time to check the board yesterday - threads get old so quick huh?  ;)

Anyway, I just wanted to finish what I stated by laying the blame somewhere for over-long albums, and That Cracka J got it in one - our old friend Percy Miller bka Master P.

Every album that No Limit dropped at its peak was as long as it could possibly be - remember all those tracks that had just two 16 bar verses, and the shit would fade during the second chorus, just so they could fit more on the CD?? In my opinion that fucked up the game - too many rappers now think they have to keep going for 70 minutes.

Admittedly, No Limit did some good stuff - Ghetto Dope and Only God Can Judge Me are tight albums that I can still play today, but when I see a C-Murder CD with 25 (yes, 25) tracks, it makes me shake my head in shame.

Want proof? Just look at Snoop - Dogystyle only had 13 tracks if you exclude skits and Gz Up Hoes Down.

But after chilling out in the dirty-dirty with P and the gang, Snoop got suckered in - the 20 tracks on Deuces and Trays had so much filler that I can't even listen to it anymore.

So there ya go, fuck P for that. Oh, and just for fun, let me end on something controversial - I thought 2001 was waaay too long. I don't want to hear skits about fucking car bombs or porno stars. In fact, I think Dre could have cut straight from Bitch Niggas to The Message and the CD would have been tighter. Ackrite ain't exactly classic to me.

But I'm probably in the minority there, and it's another thread really... Peace all.

MethodMan really fucked up Tical 2 with 26 tracks...WTF???
He could have made the album out of the 12-15 best songs and had a decent album.  But with 26 songs, that album really sucks.

On 4 out of 5 cd's the skits suck...

I really want a cd where you don't have to skip any tracks!

I just can't see the idea of putting on some tracks that's just there to fill out the album.

Most of the albums that we call classics are albums without any skip-over tracks and boring skits - And that's how it's supposed to be!!!

With you 100% dude. There are some good - even great - albums out there that are totally let down by skits. I mean, what is the real point of them anyway?! Just so the rapper and his homies have some outlet for a wack in-joke that isn't even funny if you weren't in the studio at the time?

As I said in my last post, the skits on Dre's 2001 really fuck up the continuity of the CD's second half for me. Other examples of wack skits:

Quik's Balance & Options,
The Hova interludes on Jay's Volume 3,
Any Redman skit on any of his albums ever (I love Reggie, but his interludes give my "skipping" finger great exercise)

If rappers find it necessary to fill out a CD with skits, they should sequence them as the END of the previous track, as on Under Tha Influence or Space Boogie, giving the rest of us a chance to get to the thing that matters the most...

THE MUSIC.
