I'm pretty much just looking for something basic. I don't need too much disc space, even 20GB is fine and 256MB of RAM is fine too. I pretty much just wanna watch and burn DVDs, play games, use MS Office and go on the internet. The more battery life the better.
What are the best manufacturers/models and what kind of processor should I look for? And is there anything else I should know about or look for? I haven't purchased a computer before.

Dont buy a compaq, thats my recommendation. The entire laptop is pure "cheapness."
Try going to dell.com and building your own laptop to the specifications that you need. They usually have good discounts.
Also i hear toshiba makes some nice laptops, but they are pricier.
But if you want the perfect laptop....buy an apple laptop

i dunno... I have a 1000 dollar Toshiba Sattelite Laptop (2.8mhz, 512 ram, 40gig, 64mb video card). I really like it, although the speakers are crap. Hasn't given me ANY problems, and i've had it for 6 months

i recently bought this sony vaio for about $1400 and haven't had any problems whatsoever. had it a little under a year.
i would also recommend NOT buying a compaq or hp. i'm not a fan of either of those companies.
the reason i like my sony: all of my song products (ie: digicam, mp3 player, and memory stick) are plug and play.

no you need more than 20gbs. get 60-80, trust me

Apple have pretty good laptops as far as I know. You can get a nice one for 1000 bucks, but that might be more than you want to spend on it.

20GB will be fine. I only have 16GB on my home computer and it's not even half full and everything I need is on there. Plus my MP3 Player acts like a harddrive too, it has 40GB.
I doubt I'll go with Apple because thier customer service is awful. I guess I won't bother looking at a Compaq.
I'll take a look at some Toshibas and Dells.
What kind of processor should I look for? I don't know much about that.
