Title: Who here bumped Chronic when it CAME OUT in 92?
Post by: teecee on August 15, 2002, 12:21:23 AM
I am just wondering how many of ya'll actually experienced this album when it dropped....same as Doggystyle, Regulate, etc.  I mean, we all know these are some of the greatest releases ever...... i think it is hard to have the utmost appreciation for an album unless you heard it when it dropped (and not 10 years later)....for example, i only got into Public enemy's early stuff like 5 years ago, and i think its dope (but i'm sure someone who LIVED that music when it first dropped likes it a lot more)....

i bought it the day it comes into stores...i wasnt so deep into the rap genre...just heard digital underground, public enemy, ice-t, n.w.a., professor griff...and the usual stuff on mtv before i grabbed this release....for me it was something new...fresh  sound and dope flows. Then i saw the video to the track "Deep Cover" and i was like shiiiit, thats hot, who´s this guy named snoop doggy dogg? i never really recognized him on dre´s chronic. snoop´s doggystyle release was really hyped right here...big posters in every record store. i grabbed it and this album is still one of my favourites.

nope....... kinda strange.

i was a eazy fan, an NWA fan, cypress, ice-t and then a snoop fan when doggystyle dropped... and then regulate.

i heard the chronic once a bit later a (must have been 1994/1995) at someones house, but didnt pay attention. really. didnt cop it quite a few years later. was more interested in finding a copy of the murder was the case video back then - that lowrider shit had me amazed back then... took 6 years to find a copy! (now i got 2 vhs/dvd hehe)

i was 16 when the chronic dropped. btw i bought every fuckin deathrow release the day it dropped...lol. thats the reason why i have the chronic were "bitches aint shit" is listed as track no.4 on the backcover (dont have seen much of them nowadays) and the doggstyle with "gz up hoez down" + a gang of other shit from that period.

I was 15 when the Chronic dropped. The album kinda flew under the radar for a few months...It was a late '92 release, but it didn't really start showing up on the Billboard until a few months later when G-Thang was all over the place. I picked it up before it really started heating up the charts cuz I was an NWA fan, and I remember being surprised it wasn't on Ruthless. Of course, the Intro and Dre Day pretty much cleared that one up.

I didn't hear Deep Cover, so I still remember the first Snoop verse I heard.."Bow wow wow yippee yo yippee yay Doggy Dogg's in the MF'in house..." I also remember looking in the album cover, and thinking Snoop Doggy Dogg was a retarded name (In the age of Ice Cube, MC Ren, etc). Of course, Snoop then became the biggest name in rap, with the most anticipated album of all time. I remember they kept pushing Doggystyle's release date back, pissing everyone off...Now I know it's cuz they didn't finish the thing. Back then I thought it was some kind of a marketing ploy to make people anticipate it more.

This is a dope topic dogg...Haven't thought about this in awhile.

Yeah I was 16 when the Chronic dropped, got it the day after it came out. I was on the lookout because of that Source article (the one with Dre pointing a gun at his head) I was really looking forward to Mr. Officer (damn!). And Doggystyle, I took the day off work and got to the local mall an hour before Camelot opened! I can't ever imagine another rap album getting the kind of hype from the mainstream that Doggystyle did, and Death Row was great at feeding into that hype (extra  lines on Let Me Ride remix and generally keeping him very visible). That was an era when Cube's "Predator" could debut at No. 1 on the pop charts...

peace,
tnp

I am not saying we are more REAL fans just because we experienced that shit when it dropped, i am just saying that a lot of people on this board only have a small idea about the Chronic and Doggystyle.........no matter how dope you think those albums are.

It was my brother that bumped The Chronic first (I still have the copy to this day). I used to listen to it when he would bump it in the house but I never really got into hip-hop/rap seriously until Snoop's "Doggystyle" and 2Pac's "Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z" dropped. I was like 9-10 when "The Chronic" dropped so I was just amused by all the swearing and shit, lol. I often wish I was the age I am now when Dre was about with N.W.A., because you can't really appreciate records properly (lyrics, production etc) when your that young.

Word homie......

I was a (15 year old) stubborn kid tho, like most peep's on here are now.
I had beef with Dre because of his leaving my favorite group eva. (Funny how I had no beef wit' my fav "MC" Cube tho...lol)
Anyway I avoided Dre for the first week it came out, but curiosity won that out in a hurry.

Plus am I the only one who had to adjust to Dre rapping?
At first he sounded like he was yelling n' shit, He was aiiight on "Efil4zaggiN" but his pitch was a lil' hightone for my like...so I figured "The Chronic" was going to be a ear buster like ughh!!
Plus let the record show that "Deep cover" was not an instant banger like most claim to think, "N.W.A." fan's expected more.
But STill my love for the "N.W.A." fam ran way to deep.
So I copped the "Deep cover" soundtrack & "The Chronic" a week after it hit shelves.....and was introduced to The inmates.

Tight topic
Yeah homie I LIVED it dogg

Peace

In '92, not only the Chronic, but all kinds of stuff. I was 12, and I was beginning to fugure out how to sneak around my dad. Anyways, I got Doggystyle the DAY IT CAME OUT!!!!  :) With G'z Up Hoe'z Down on it, and missed that song ever since I got Doggystyle on CD, but I got it on one of my mix CDs. LOL Regulate I got a little later, I didn't get Above the Rim until a year later, I always wanted it, but didn't get it until my sister got the tape on my birthday. Most everything else I got copies of from people, I love tapes back in the day, good thing CDs got burners now. As for the Chronic, my cousin dubbed that shit for me, and it was on. Now I've bought the tape like 2 times, and I'm on my 3rd CD, as two were jacked, and I wanted to get the remastered version anyways.

I did. I bought the single for "Nuthin' But A G Thang" first and then after a month I bought the album. That album changed my whole perspective on hip hop at the time. All I would listen to for two years was only West Coast hip hop.

Bought it a month after it dropped in 92. I was 14, went to my cousins house, and he was bumpin it. I had to get a copy that day. Dre Day is what introduced me to hip hop, and to this day, it's still my fave song.

Hm. maybe I was too young for The Chronic in 1992, I didnt know so much about rap music. I just've seen the G-Thang video and liked it alot. But I was gettin Doggystyle as it was gettin famous with videos like Whats My Name and Gin And Juice in early 1994. After bumpin Doggystyle I bought The Chronic a week later. I was lovin Regulate since I've seen it on MTV a couple of times bacc in 94. I wanted to buy the album, but coudnt get it bacc in tha dayz, so I was buyin da Above The Rim Soundtracc.

I got into rap in 94.  The first song from the chronic I heard was Let Me ride, and I was really feeling it.  I had a friend record the tape for me and then it was on.  I picked up Regulate right away and then I became hooked on Death Row and tha dogg pound.

The youngsters here probably have no idea about the kind of hype there was behind Doggystyle before it was released. It has not been matched sinced. The amazing thing is that it actually surpassed the hype!!!!!

Where I live, the local ghetto record store opened at midnight the day Doggystyle came out.....and there were so many people they ended up running out of copies.

Yeah, I did, it was amazing at the time... people don't realize how big Snoop was, they think he was just like he is now... but man, Snoop at 1 time, was MUCH bigger than Jay Z or anybody else out right now could hope to be.  He was so main stream it was rediculous, he was on the news, old grannies knew his name, he was huge huge huge.  He was probably the biggest star in all of music for a little while, when doggystyle had been out a few months.  You had Dre, Snoop, and Ice Cube all dropping just straight classic, classic stuff all over the radio, then pac came in... it was really great.  That's kinda why I've moved away from rap a little bit now, it's just nowhere near as good, and it's sad.  I wanna go back to those days when it was just AMAZING to hear music.  Eminem was the only one close, recently... his second album had a couple spots that when it came out, was amazing for a little while... you just wanted to know what he was doing next.  There's nobody doing that right now, I don't think.

The Chronic era was heaven for a West Coast head. MTV was riding Dre and Snoop's penises so hard with specials, performances and their videos being played every damn 30 minutes. BET's Rap City played West Coast videos from the mainstream and underground artists. They even had Volume 10 in regular rotation! All thanks to the influence of The Chronic. Gang violence increased and wanna-be's popped up everywhere trying to be Snoop [see HBO Special: Bangin' In Little Rock]. Fools were rocking flannels in Omaha. Everyone copied Dre's "whistle-synth" sound [see "Big Poppa", "I Seen A Man Die", etc.]. You had East Coast videos with lo-lo's in them and even they were rocking Ben Davis and flannels [see Onyx]. Even hip hop clothing designers incorporated the West Coast style into their clothes. I had a gang of flannel shirts that Karl Kani included into his collection. Snoop was as large as Eminem is now if you compare the timelines because hip hop wasn't as widespread back then. 800,000 copies in the first week back in '93 was equally as phenomenal as pushing 1.7 million in '00. FUCK SOMEONE BUILD A TIME MACHINE! Y'all got me reminiscing!

I'd say snoop was probably even BIGGER than Eminem for a short while, but it kinda died down a lot quicker than Eminem has, with 3 solid albums to push him, where snoop only had Doggystyle and the Chronic stuff.

First time I ever saw Snoop, was MTV had a sing-along version of Deep Cover with words at the bottom of the screen.  I was like "Man" and we bought the chronic like that week and played it at the pool all summer while we swam and played and crap.  I was only 13.

I was only 8 at the time.  My bro was always bumpin Eazy E and shit like that.  Never really heard the Chronic till later.  Makes me mad. lol.  yeah what got me into rap was Dogg Food.  That's when I started giving it a real listen.  My cuz was always bumpin it.   I loved it.  Of course I was still kind of young and didn't have enough money to buy my own shit.  So I bought some blank tapes and recorded that shit.  And what put me over the top as far as Hip Hop goes, was ALL EYEZ ON ME.  That did it.  I was hooked fo life.  Recorded that shit on tape too.

word to trauma !!!

that`s so true what u sayin` the youngsters don`t realize how big snoop was in 92 - 93.
At that time " nuthin`but a g thang " got a lot of play on mtv,
i just wanted to buy the single of it , didn`t know anything about snoop or dre just liked that song.
The single was sold out so i bought the chronic.

But dre and snoop were really big , it was the first time that
gangsta rap had such an international commercial success.

And after the chronic, snoops solo album was the most anticipated rap album for all hip-hop heads over the globe.
when " doggystyle " was released it was sold like no rap album
before. snoop was real mighty at that time
